  1. help me out here... ]Citigroup has entered into a 20-year partnership with the ball club and, news reports have it, will give the team $20 million a year. That is a fair-size chunk of change (even if it would not fully cover the annual salary of New York’s highest-paid ballplayer, Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees, who proves every October that he could not hit water if he fell off a pier). $20M x 20 = 400 > $25M * 10 = $250M and while alex rodriguez might be the highest paid player in new york, he is not the player who gets paid the most by a new york baseball team. that honor belongs to derek jeter. But he too plays for the wrong team. why should we even care if our naming rights can pay for players on the yankees? on the mets, its pedro martinez, but his 2006 salary of just under $15M doesn't make for nearly as much fun.
  2. wow. every line in there should be followed by a "ba-dum bum" or more correctly, "wokka wokka" i liked wally much better during his brief tenure as a radio host than as a print journalist.
  3. hot dogs, green grass right next to shea guaranteed to...

  5. it was all on that long-discarded hot dog wrapper...
  6. probably. well, maybe 26.7 is a high percentage. of course, part of that could be attributed to taking in reclamation projects than fostering a drug culture, but where's the fun in that assumption? i should look into that middle name thing...
  7. martin wrote: and would you really worry about the conclusions drawn by people who are dumb enough to make decisions about a people based on a team name/mascot? individually, no. but stupid people massed together create a powerful force - a Collective Dumb - that can be at times insuperable. think of the south, and racial attitudes thereof or of teenagers, anywhere. until we find a way to ferret out the stupid and isolate them from each other and insulate the world from them all, you really really do need to worry about what stupid people think. stupid people find themselves voting, and voted into office. they find themselves in positions of importance, and of influence. stupid people shape public policy, and have public policy shaped for them. and more importantly, when you mix stupid people with aggressive behavior, you end up with bad acts being committed against individuals for the failings of a stereotype.

  9. how do you NOT lead with steve howe? also, i'm so curious how that 26.7% figure compares to other teams. i'm guessing that its not really all that much worse than anybody else. especially since at least three of those players have ties to the mets, and i really wasn't paying all that much attention to the list! i'd harp about ill-applied statistics, but i don't really think i need to in this instance.
  10. mo vaughn wasn't a flier. it was a poorly researched, ill executed major investment. we took a flier on jose valentin this year. a small investment in wood would've been akin to that, not to mo vaughn.
  11. i'll play again, and hopefully not suck and not trade really good secondbasemen for average pitching.
  12. around mile 14 of the nyc marathon... 1 Court Sq Long Island City, NY 11120 basically between 44th dr & 45th ave, along 25A Jackson Ave, just south of the queensboro.
  13. mike piazza is available. i know, i know - i've long favored his use as a shortstop, but with reyes entrenched there, maybe he could shift over a spot on the infield.
  14. that's a bit more that the yankees got than i expected....
  15. ok, the oregon trail one is funny. but also unfunny in its length. no more lists. that should be, like, a man law or something. no overly long email lists.
  16. ]Twice [the irish] tried to invade Canada, believing that they could trade Canadian land for Ireland's freedom. well, that sounds like a fun story to learn more about...
  17. ="Edgy DC"]We have to look at this with some degree of nuance. There's a difference between calling a team after a local tribe and calling them Redskins There's a difference between "Irish" and "Fighting Irish" and there's a difference between "Fighting Illini" and "Fighting Irish" and there's a difference betewen "Irish" and "Leprechaun." This all began with an inability to make distinctions, as the University was founded by a French order, not an Irish one, and has been mispronounced (like most francophonic things in the midwest throughout most of their history). It was this big Catholic University and at a time when most Americans didn't make much distinction between Irish and Catholic, they accepted the label "Irish" when they should have resisted it. well, c'mon... is not like they could've called themselves the fightin' french, and expected to win a game!
  18. wow. talk about turning an inane quote into a story. where's that sportswriter thread when you need it?
  19. in the NL, shortstop should probably go to adam everett, but will certainly go to omar vizquel, who was the second best shortstop.
  20. juan uribe would be another player worthy of taking away jeter's glove, tho he only played 132 games.
  21. Elster88 wrote: ]While Mike and Mike agreed that taking performance enhancing drugs should be punished, they lauded Mota for acting like a man, admitting it and apologizing for it. Also- Michael Kay has reportedly said that Mota is now his favorite player for the same reasons. Can someone please provide a link to that sound byte, too? Fucking ridiculous that a person is lauded for telling the truth...especially when it's something that everyone already knows. But then all 3 Mikes are idiots. i think it is possible that you can separate out the commission of a bad act from the admission to a bad act, and applaud the latter while still disparage the former. also, i think that mike and mike' stance is overblown in the above quote. they did amply caveat their applause by stating that it was relative to the actions of others who so easily shrugged off the hat of responsibility. if you're gonna do something wrong, at least wear the hat of responsibility. taking responsibility for your bad actions is worthy of commendation. not as much as if you don't do bad things, but certainly moreso than if you don't take responsibility for those bad actions. and i think that is where mike & mike were going. michael kay, i have no idea. didnt hear it...
  22. also, re: mota - i guess the 50 gamers aren't for innocent things like crack or meth, and that its definitely a cheaters' drug that he took?
