  1. NL player who might have been playing in 1975, was old, and wasn't Hank Aaron. Joe Torre? OE - Not Torre. My first thought was somebody else, and that somebody else was the correct answer.

  3. Operative phrase is "not in the HOF"...answers can be cut and pasted from the post and blown up to normal size. One was probably retired-number worthy. The other two had good careers with '60s expansion teams, but nothing to retire a number over. And both of them absolutely sucked in blue and orange.
  4. This list of retired numbers from Baseball Reference shows quite a lot of range. One trivia question I always meant to ask here is this: Name the five Mets not in the HOF who have had their numbers retired by a major league team. One, of course, is Gil Hodges. And I'm counting Rusty Staub even though his number is now unretired. To avoid threadjacking, I'll just post the other three in tiny type below: Ken Boyer - Cardinals Jim F. Fregosi - Angels Randy Freaking Jones - Padres

I like that Mets management has been conservative in retiring numbers. It's tough to make a case for retiring 31 but not (ultimately) 15. Both were established stars who came to the Mets mid-career. Both had great careers as Mets, and both spent about the same amount of time as Mets. Both have a good chance of getting into the HOF, and both have a good chance of going in with Mets caps.
  6. None. I don't want to have to drop $20 on a new Fafif t-shirt.
  7. Looking forward to a future Mirabelle Megdal article on what cheap bastards the Wilpons are for not allowing Mr. Met to take a couple of hours to show up at FanFest.
  8. Among NL right-fielders, only Gerardo Parra has a higher WAR than Byrd. Byrd's on pace to finish the season with 28 HR's. I can't figure how Byrd's WAR is higher than Beltran, being that WAR is a counting stat and Byrd trails Beltran by about 50 PA's and has worse across the board slash lines. This is why I don't take black box statistics like WAR too seriously. For what it's worth, BBRef has Beltran's dWAR at -0.8 and Byrd's at +0.6, which would explain the difference. Byrd a better defensive outfielder than Beltran. Who would've thunk?

They seem to be regarded as a fluky team in a weak division. But the '73 Mets had the best pitching in all of baseball that season and that has to count for a lot. They might not have been an imposing offensive team but they had the pitching equivalent of Bench, Rose and Morgan. They were extremely banged up, but when more or less healthy at the end of the season, they were unstoppable. Defense up the middle. Grote. Harrelson. Millan. Even Don Hahn wasn't bad, or at least I didn't think so when I was eight.
  14. A couple more good defensive 1Bs and their dWARs from Baseball Reference: Wes Parker -3.0 J.T. Snow -11.2 The explanation says that the dWAR includes a "position adjustment". I suspect what that means is that 1B, because it's a less demanding position than the "average" position, has a baseline negative value. So it takes a Keith Hernandez-level 1B to contribute as much defensively as, say, a league average 3B. And even a good 1B is going to have a negative net defensive value.
  15. Section 533 for Sunday's game against the Nats with my old college roommate and his family, who are coming up from the Balto-DC area. Say hi if you're around.
  16. Suck it, Don Aase.
  17. Leiter mentioned in the NYT as a possible candidate. On the Republican side, some lawmakers are reportedly considering running for the Senate, along with some political outsiders, including Al Leiter, a former major league pitcher who is now a broadcaster. Conservative activist Steve Lonegan, a former mayor of Bogota, N.J., said he is gathering signatures and raising money for a run.

  21. I was about as hard core "keep Ike in the majors" as they come. But it's time, Ike. If it's any consolation, I think tickets are still available to Penn & Teller at Rio this weekend.

Leake, no drunk driver, got himself hauled away for shoplifiting six American Rag T-shirts worth $59.88 from the Macy's store in downtown Cincinnati. Not only does he pitch and steal, he also hits - career .272/.302/.348. EdgyMD wrote: Mesoraco went to Puxatawny High, which just has to be the suckiest, with the opposing team's all making the same three tired cracks ("Hey, batter, wuzza matta? You see your shadow?") that were never funny decades ago when they were coined. Howie in the bottom of the second: "Mesoraco might get into the game if he sees his shadow".
  23. Dave Mlicki OE - acquired from Cleveland
