Omar had his back to the wall after the Duaner Sanchez crash and managed to not only get a competent replacement in Roberto Hernandez, but also brought in Perez as an extra starter. And he pitched well in the 2006 playoffs when he was desperately needed. We all know how that ended, but that wasn't Ollie's fault. What was infamous was the contract that followed the trade.
  2. Ouch. Though it sounds more like "hanging out with a jagoff who instigates fights by throwing beer bottle bashing" than "gay bashing". Never mind Piazza. How did this thread get this far without mention of this saucy, dress-wearing Met?

Is it about contributing to a team win, or about individual accomplishments irrespective of team outcome? And how do you even begin to separate the two? Why did Santana practically* max out the scoring for his no-hitter? By your logic, because the Mets won by eight, Johan could've given up seven runs on 12 hits without jeopardizing the team win. Why then, was he credited fully for a brilliant, but according to your rationale here, superfluous performance? And then why does any Met, for that matter, ever get any Schaefer points in a team loss? * But see my ballot. The difference is that there was no point where Santana could have clinched the win by doing less than what he actually did - every out he got increased the Mets' win probability, however infinitesimally. So his performance wasn't really superfluous. Valdespin's home run increased the Mets win probability to 1. A simple poke into short center would have done the same. What if he'd lined the ball off the RF wall - an easy double and possibly a triple under ordinary circumstances, but a single in a walk-off situation? Would he then get Schaefer credit for a single, or for an XBH? I'd guess a single. Why treat a GS differently? I very rarely Schaefer, but if I were Schaefering on June 1, 2012, I probably wouldn't have given Santana the full six points. Sentimentality aside, it was an 8-0 shutout, and there was plenty of offensive and defensive credit (Baxter!) to go around.
  4. Lucas Duda, your NL leader in OPS.
  5. If they gave out BOCs for thread titles...
  6. Fun fact - Giancarlo Stanton is younger than Travis d'Arnaud and only about seven months older than Zack Wheeler. I'm generally a fan of rebuilding a weak team with prospects, but I'd trade Wheeler and d'Arnaud for Stanton in a heartbeat.
  7. MINNEAPOLIS -- Dont get the Minnesota Twins president, Dave St. Peter, started on the decision to build an open-air stadium in a city known for its brutal winters and fickle springs. The Twins have benefited from favorable April weather in their first three seasons at Target Field, but St. Peter figured they would eventually have a problem. I said hey, hey, hey, St. Peter I've got a tale to tell I just flew in from New York town And it's snowing like hell And it's snowing like...hell

  15. What makes it really tough to guess position players is that it just lists the positions without regard to frequency. So if a player played two games at 1B and 152 at LF, he's listed as 1B, LF. This drove me nuts when the program gave me Cleon Jones. I suck at it. Selected post-1975 position players with at least 2000 career at bats. I tried fifteen players, and the only ones I got right were Jones, Beltran, and John Wathan. I missed a whole bunch of middle infielders from the early 1980s.

  22. sharpie wrote: I said retired players. Wright could play out the contract and then have some broken-down DH appearances for the Indians. The "All-Mets" idea is a neat bit of trivia, but if Wright ends his career batting .260 in 100 at bats as an AL DH, it wouldn't make him less Metly in any meaningful way. Letting a star go near the end of his career beats the alternative. I wouldn't say Hank Aaron's Braveness was diminished by the fact that he ended his career as a Brewer.
