    Hey-wait-he-was-on-that-team is, like, our brand, at least as much as "starting pitching" and almost as much as "great big-head mascot." This is something I've often wondered about when I run out of other things to wonder about. Is this true, or does it look that way because we pay more attention to the Mets and because self-flagellation is also part of our brand? Keith Hernandez was an Indian. Jerry Koosman was a Phillie. Mike Piazza was an Athletic. Tom Seaver was a Red Sox, and the only reason why we all remember that is the whole 1986 WS opposing bench story. It was an active marketing strategy to pursue over-the hill New York legends in the beginning, but that ended with Willie Mays.

    Since the games wouldn't be in front of fans, time zones wouldn't have to be an issue. The Indians and Reds could just play their "home" games at 4:00 AZ time. The one concern there is that 4PM in the summer in Arizona is seriously hot. But if they decide to play in Arizona during the summer, heat is going to be an issue no matter what time they play. Is Chase Field an option for afternoon games?

    Mario Cuomo was a centerfielder in the Pirates organization in 1952. According to BBRef, he played for the Brunswick (GA) Pirates of the Class D Florida-Georgia League and hit .244 in 254 ABs.

    Getting the thread started. I'm thinking about wangling a business trip east in March or April and tacking on a few days in NYC. Maybe I'll join the Tuesday night club for the 3/31 game against the Phillies or 4/14 against the Braves, if there's still a Tuesday night club this season.

    Am I the only one who thinks that maybe, just maybe, 5 years at about $24 million per is a little rich for an almost 30 year old pitcher who has never had an ERA below 3.30 in a pitcher friendly park?

    I'm hearing that Jeter should get his own class. Everyone else on the ballot should have to wait a year. Please tell me that "I'm hearing" means "some drunk in a Yankee cap was yelling it on the subway" and not "an actual journalist with readership and a salary wrote it with a straight face in a public forum".

    So at today's level of skill, or roughly their career level? If I choose David Wright for the Virginia team, am I getting vintage 2006-08, or am I getting bad back, out of shape, hasn't-been-in-a-real-game-in-years David Wright?

    I'm alone on the "none" train. One of the things I like about the Mets is that they don't feel the need to laud every pretty good ballplayer who comes their way as if he were Willie Mays. The first manager, the beloved manager who won the team's first World Series and then died a Met three years later, one of the best pitchers ever to play the game, and the best offensive catcher in history sound about right to me. A whole lot of really good ballplayers, not so much. Speaking of Willie Mays, I'd include him in the poll. I wouldn't vote for him, but the http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2007/05/19/retire-24/Willie Freaking Mays argument has merit. Retiring numbers can be as much about sentimentality as skill, so I could also see taking Keef's 17 out of circulation when he retires as a broadcaster in recognition of near-HOF play and long term off-field service. Tough to make the same case for Ron. OE - while I was out here being long-winded, it looks like Frayed Knot joined me on the train. Hey, FK.

    Indians also 4 games behind the Twins, and both have 6 to play. So they still have some hope of winning the AL Central outright. The Twins haven't quite clinched a playoff spot, though the Indians, Rays, and A's would all need to go on tears to knock them out.

    The good news is that it's 10-1 Indians in the top of the 8th. The bad news is Ollie Pérez is on the mound.

    The Mets going 6-1 and the Nats going 2-6 is a longshot. But it's not that much of a longshot.
