  1. The quest for an immaculate grid continues, as I got my second consecutive 8. Rocky Padre: Jason Marquis 0.4 Rocky Cardinal: Nolan Arenado 44 Rocky base stealer: Dante Bichette 14 Cleveland Padre: Mike Clevinger 24 Cleveland Cardinal: Keef 3 Cleveland base stealer: Kenny Lofton 40 Diamond Padre: Steve Finley 15 Diamond Cardinal: Paul Goldschmidt 62 Diamond base stealer: For the Diamondback base stealer, I thought about AJ Pollock. I can't not think of him first, as he's both my birthday homeboy and one letter off from being my last name homeboy. But I decided that he never got enough plate appearances to get to 30SB (wrong!) and went with Steve Finley. Finley had several seasons of 30SB, but none in Arizona. It did occur to me after my wrong guess that Finley would fit in the Diamondback/Padre box. Dante Bichette, generally a big slow guy, had this weird season in the late 90s when he stole 32 bases while the rest of MLB was in the midst of a steroid fueled slugfest. I think it was the same season that Brady Anderson hit 50 HRs leading off for the O's. Mike Clevinger famously (around here, anyway) got run out of town and sent to San Diego after he violated COVID protocols. I didn't think Jason Marquis was that obscure.
  2. Not quite immaculate, but my best score ever. Giant Royal - Carlos Beltran 16% Giant Met - JD Davis 9% Giant .300 - Willie Mays 56% Royal Pirate - Not Neil Walker Met Pirate - Willie Montañez 0.03% Pirate .300 - Roberto Clemente 75% Red Royal - Mike Moustakas 23% Red Met - Devin Mesoraco 3% Red .300 - Pete Rose 91%

  5. Yeah, I got it reversed.
  6. You guys who remember that Todd Zeile was an Oriole... 5 today. Got the three easy 40 HR guys, Williams, Sosa, and Thomas, though I was surprised that Ted Williams, still probably the best hitter who ever lived, a righthander hitting in a ballpark made for right handers, was only chosen by 7%. Also remembered Tony Conigliaro (0.4%) as an Angel. My parents were on the, uh, economical side, so instead of Strat-O-Matic, I got this game called Sports Illustrated Baseball as a hand-me-down from my cousin Maxie. You chose teams instead of players. Each team had its own brochure with the players' stats for the year plus a little writeup on how the team did. It was actually a great game, though not quite at the level of Strat. My version was based on the 1970 season, so I'm good at 1970 stats, and Tony C was finishing up his all too short career in Anaheim in 1970. Also, that was the year Ed Kranepool was sent to Tidewater. He didn't even make the 1970 Mets SI team. Vaguely remembered that Norm Cash spent some time with the White Sox, along with 0.9% of players who got that square. OE: Conigliaro's season with the Angels was actually '71. So I have no idea why I remembered he was an Angel.
  7. I suppose a lot of guesses went to Bob Gibson, who "only" won 251 games. Yep. I went immediately to Gibson and completely spaced on the fact that Steve Carlton was ever anything other than a Phillie. Indians/Orioles: Albert Belle 19% Indians/Royals: Carlos Santana 43% Indians/300 Wins: Gaylord Perry 28% Mets/Orioles: Mike Bordick 3% Mets/Royals: Joe Foy 0.4% Mets/300 Wins: Tom Seaver 58% Cardinals/Orioles: Cardinals/Royals: Mark Littell 0.4% Cardinals/300 Wins:
  8. I've definitely thought about guessing Octavio Dotel when I have no idea what the answer is.
  9. I'm still playing, but I haven't been posting my scores because I still have a few small slivers of pride left. I also went 0 for 3 on the Rays, but I did manage to pull Steve Avery out of my bum as a Red Brave and scored a 5 this morning. Even though I know it will break my heart, I keep watching the clock to see if it's 11:30 yet.
  10. I had to be careful to click on the correct Jose Reyes for my .300 Met hitter. Olerud was the first .300 Met to come to mind, but I used him as a Mariner figuring that I'd be able to come up with another Met more easily than another Mariner. Only 1% picked Olerud as the Mariner. 85% for Ichiro last I looked, and most of the rest likely went with Edgar Martinez. I kept it Metly by picking Melvin Mora as the .300 hitting Oriole. Andres Giménez (5%) was my Met/Guardian. I just got a Giménez bobblehead for a friend's daughter at a game a couple of weeks ago. Went with Javier Baez as the Met/Cub, and got a thumbs down for the other squares. Thought about Carlos Santana as the Guardian/Mariner, as Santana spent much of his career wearing 41 for the Guards and has since been everywhere, but I made some other wrong guess. I kept thinking of Don Buford as an Oriole who probably played elsewhere, but didn't manage to pull his son out of the depths of my brain.
  11. I've been thinking about the wisdom of moving Scherzer and maybe even Verlander for a while. They both still have value, and one of the advantages of being Steve Cohen is that you can accept your mistakes, eat salary, and move on. The main concern there is that we have no high level MLB-ready pitching prospects in our own system for 2024, and the free agent pitching crop is thin once we get past Ohtani. Maybe we get The Great One, but he's basically going to write his own contract. I don't like the risk of signing any one player to 8/400, and I'm guessing that's what he'll cost at the low end. https://www.outkick.com/shohei-ohtani-contract-estimate-reaches-insane-new-highs/#:~:text=According%20to%20their%20model%2C%20Ohtani,for%20a%20free%20agent%20starter This article has his value at 6/202 if he were only a pitcher and 9/326 if he were only a hitter. The next best pitcher available for 2024 is most likely Aaron Nola. Clayton Kershaw signed a one year contract last year and will technically be available, but he's probably not going anywhere. Marcus Stroman has a player option that he should exercise, but that bridge is burned. If we could get a high quality young pitcher in exchange for Scherzer plus salary, that's great. But that's a big if.
  12. 6 of 9. I might have done better if I didn't wake up at 4:15, see the M, think, "oh, Mariners", and immediately put Edwin Diaz in what was actually the Marlins/Mets box. But like Ben Grimm, I haven't been plugged in enough to baseball since 1994 to be able to name a Cub and Marlin. "Name a Marlin" is challenging enough. I also played it safe and assumed Expos wouldn't be considered Nationals. Angel/National - Rendon Angel/Marlin - ? 20-win Angel - Ryan Cub/Nat - ? Cub/Marlin - ? 20-win Cub - Jenkins Met/ Nat - Murph Met/Marlin - Conine 20-win Met - Seaver

  14. 4 for 9 today. I figured I had a shot at respectability since I follow the Guardians in a half baked way, but the only one I came up with was Mike Hargrove, Guardian and Ranger.

  16. That's one of the few I got. Living in Chicago when they traded for a hot young player from the Dodgers helped. Also got a Brewer/Yankee picked by 0.02%. In general, though, the two-team player boxes are killers.
  17. Edgy MD wrote: My 20-win .300-hitter was Don Drysdale, which they accepted. Don Newcombe here.
  18. It was Escobar who bought the JANKOWSKI 16 jerseys for the team the day after Jankowski noted that nobody was going to buy a jersey with his name on it. Class guy who helped the team. The prospects are ranked 17 and 20 in the Angels' org. The Angels needed a 3B, so I want to think the Mets could have gotten more in return.
  19. I got 6, missing all the players who had played for two teams with the exception of the Angels/Cardinals gimme. I was surprised that only 0.2% of people picked the same 20-win, .300 average pitcher I did. I'm not sure if the two obvious great hitting pitchers ever won 20 in a season - I'm fairly certain the active one hasn't - so I didn't go with either of them.
  20. I had no idea so many Mets came from San Diego, but I guess that's part of baseball being big in SoCal in general. When I think of Mets from San Diego, I think of Kevin Mitchell first and nobody else second.

This one got me wondering much more than a fifteen second spot should. I read it as the South Asian-American missing the cues and playing third wheel as the big gruff African-American male mechanic was going on a one-on-one Dunkin run with the cute-ish African-American female mechanic. But after googling a bit, it looks like the point was that South Asian-American colleague wasn't a colleague, but a customer breaking in on the fraternity of mechanics. If a commercial requires this much research, it doesn't work.
  23. I really should be prepared with a KTE for youse guys, but it's been a busy couple of months with the new job and I've barely had time to pay attention to the Mets, much less my adopted AL team from my adopted city. Briefly, they're good at everything except hitting. Emanuel Clase has a good case for best major league closer without a torn patellar tendon. They all catch-n-throw pretty well. The rotation is above average. Giménez is turning into the good field no hit middle infielder we always knew he could be. I believe Amed Rosario is on the active roster but warming the bench.
