  1. I guessed Palmer. Then I guessed Cuellar. Then I gave up on that square.
  2. =MFS62 post_id=136988 time=1694188170 user_id=60] Let's show a team leading an AL division by 16 games how tough the NL really is.
  3. Caught you. The Best and the Brightest isn't a baseball book. Nice job sneaking it in. I put it down a few months ago and keep meaning to pick it up again. I think winning to please myself and my household should be reason enough. The Edgy's won a lot of games for us. Let's win this one for the Edgy.
  4. Saturday is definitely the easy one. I got my first and only immaculate grid last week. 8 today. I forgot that Jeets was never named MVP.
  5. Here in Cleveland, the word is that Terry Francona is about ready to call it a career after squeezing what he could out of Jose Ramirez and the Twenty-Five Question Marks for the past eleven years.
  6. 8 today. Missed the Ranger Cub, and annoyed with myself for forgetting Ferguson Jenkins was a Ranger for a large part of his career. Like a lot of people here, I depend on Ball Four and vaguely remembered '70s guys. My Brave/Brewer was also Jim Bouton, and I went with ex-Senator and Ball Four Pilot Don Mincher as my Ranger/Brewer. Somehow dug up Carl Morton as my National Brave, probably because unrelated Charlie Morton recently beat the Mets.
  7. And 1 for Mookie, while we're at it. Not that I think any Mets numbers should be retired other than 14, 24, 31, 37, and 41. 24 because Willie Mays is Willie Mays even if he wasn't much of a Met. Maybe 17 because it's about sentimentality and Keith gets extra love because of his time in the booth. And perhaps 5. Who didn't love Tsuyoshi Shinjo? And, sure, 42 deserves the MLB-wide retirement.
  8. Even if the bus was moving along nicely at 80mph, it would take 690 years to get from PSL to Jupiter, at which point the rehabbing Met would likely be eligible for free agency.
  9. Frayed Knot wrote: I still had trouble thinking of a Brewer/Met. Even 2023 Mets Daniel Vogelbach didn't occur to me and neither did Mark Canha because A) I didn't think of either, and in the case of Cahna I already forgot where we traded him so even thinking of him wouldn't have helped. Jeromy Burnitz and Mike Cameron came to mind but I didn't want to use them as I had an inkling I might need them elsewhere. So it then occurred to me that the Brewers were also the Seattle Pilots so I started thinking of characters from BALL FOUR and quickly hit upon Greg Goossen for a 0.04% recognition score. I had the exact same thought process with Goossen, and of course I remembered the "in ten years he has a chance to be thirty" anecdote, but I wasn't sure if he'd actually ever made a Mets regular season roster. So I spent a few minutes trying to remember that guy who was one of my favorite Mets like two months ago but was traded to Milwaukee at the deadline...and damned near put down Escobar before remembering it was Canha. Got 7. Couldn't come up with any other Brewer combos.
  10. Still married to the Mets, but I moved in with the Guardians eight years ago.
  11. I'd think it would be unfair to the other contenders to allow certain teams to reverse certain decisions at will.
  12. Frayed Knot wrote: So we won one of four which ain't great but it's something, especially since the Pythagorean projection based on our RS v RA suggests that we should have gone 0-9 A 21-3 loss goes a long Pythagorean way. The Pythagorean calcs should discount runs scored off a position player.
  13. =nymr83 post_id=134161 time=1691290463 user_id=54] Tim Anderson is a punk, overrated, and LOL Jose Ramirez dropped him like Mike Tyson hitting a punching bag
  14. As it was explained to me today, for luxury tax purposes, any money the Mets send the Astros to pay down Verlander contract is treated identically to having that money on [the Mets] payroll. So if they're sending $54M to HOU as reported, those are taxable payroll dollars for the Mets. I'm surprised that this needs explaining. Why would it be otherwise? I'm guilty of posting it to the forum. I read this https://www.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/competitive-balance-taxhere: [bLOCKQUOTE]A team's Competitive Balance Tax figure is determined using the average annual value of each player's contract on the 40-man roster, plus any additional player benefits. [/bLOCKQUOTE] I took that to mean that if Verlander's on the Astros' 40-man, then his salary applies to the Astros' luxury tax ceiling, even if the Mets are actually paying the bulk of his salary. I read "plus any additional player benefits" to mean "the value of any extra non-monetary benefits a team is giving to players on its current roster" - like if the Mets decided to buy Jacob DeGrom a private plane to fly home to Florida after ballgames to keep him from jumping ship last year - not "the additional money they're paying to players not on the 40-man". So, that's not the correct reading?
  15. That's kind of the problem. If the offense were just plain bad, the solution would be easy - get a new offense. But it's not bad so much as it's a sea of question marks. Does Baty need to develop, or does he just suck? Is Lindor the superstar we need and we thought we were getting, or is he just a pretty good ballplayer getting superstar money? Is Alonso a right handed Babe Ruth, or is he Dave Kingman without the bad attitude and cool stache? Is Vientos? And, WTF, Jeff McNeil?
  16. He played for 11 different teams, and he wasn't prime Bartolo with the Mets. Very much an honor that he wants to retire as a Met, even if it's just symbolic.
  17. Nah, I had some Colby Mayo on my roast beef sandwich today.
  18. =MFS62 post_id=133469 time=1690855546 user_id=60] Getting closer to the deadline. If they trade anyone else, he may have to bail out of the team plane on the way to KC. Later
  19. All the dumb clichés applied, completely unironically. A pro's pro. Got good at-bats. Could do it all. Really fit in New York. Great veteran presence. Go, Brewers, at least as far as beating out the rest of the NL Central.
  20. Frayed Knot wrote: Ronald Sr. was signed by the Mets back in the late 90s and, though never made MLB, stayed in the minors until age 27 and in Caribbean winter leagues until fairly recently (still just 44 y/o). Can he pitch?
  21. When Patrick Corbin is pitching, there's always hope
  22. There's about 35% of the season left, plus the 2024 player option that Scherzer will exercise barring a miracle. So Scherzer is owed about $58 million, and I'd guess Steve picks up at least $45 million of that. It does give luxury tax relief, though, as the full salary would be applied to the Rangers' cap.
  23. Frayed Knot wrote: Looks so far that unproven though high ceiling guys are their current obsession. Absolutely the right approach, I think. I'll take that risk over getting a 25-year-old marginal player all day and every day, and I doubt Scherzer would have fetched more than a marginal established player from anyone else. Even if 90% of those high ceiling guys fail, the 10% who succeed make it a worthwhile gamble. Makes sense for Texas, too. They're contending and need whatever arms they can get, which is what happens when your pitching Plan A involves a full season from JdG. Wonder how much of Scherzer's 23 and 24 salary the Mets are picking up.
  24. =G-Fafif post_id=132977 time=1690485208 user_id=55] Wanna beer that's smooth? Go see the newest Brewer, Carlos Santana, traded to Milwaukee for a minor league infielder by Pittsburgh.
