  1. They only count Negro Leagues records up to 1948. I think that's an overall MLB rule, not an Immaculate Grid decision. I guess the logic is that after 1948, the best African American players were going into the major leagues? Not exactly true, but it's the only rationale I can think of. Aaron played shortstop for the Indianapolis Clowns in 1951. I fell into the same trap a couple of weeks ago.
  2. It was kind of fun today. I blew it by forgetting the degree to which Buzz Capra sucked except for the year he won the ERA title with Atlanta.
  3. My best score ever today. I'm pretty bad at this, so usually I just try for immaculate and don't worry about the rarity score. This time, I was fairly confident in my answers, so I tried for rarity. Overall 69 A's Dodgers - Piazza 6 A's Cubs - Ken Holtzman 4 A's Cy Young - Vida Blue 24 3.00 ERA Dodgers - Bob Welch 0.3 3.00 ERA Cubs - Jake Arrieta 11 3.00 ERA Cy - Don Newcombe 0.2 No-hitter Dodgers - Hideo Nomo 13 No-hitter Cubs - Milt Pappas 8 No-hitter Cy - Seaver 5 (?!?) It would probably be more challenging to come up with a Cy Young winner who didn't have an ERA below 3.
  4. I wasn't aware that only Negro League stats for 1948 and prior were recognized. So I didn't get credit for Hank Aaron as a shortstop.
  5. Only got 7 today, but I was particularly proud of remembering how to spell Johneshwy Fargas (0.2%) as my Mets CF.

That being said, Bartolo Colon clearly isn't a Hall of Famer, but I would have liked to see him get more votes.
  7. Reyes wasn't getting into the HOF because he wasn't good enough at baseball, charges or not. I'd guess the charges would have been part of the discussion if Reyes had an HOF-worthy career.
  8. Based on a true story. The Osage tribe collects royalties on oil below their reservation. The white man collects royalties on the Osage. Scorsese directs as if it's a New York mob movie that happens to take place in Oklahoma, with DeNiro as the Don and DiCaprio playing his loyal but slow-witted caporegime who figures out too late that he's just a pawn in the game of life. Blackfoot Nation member Lily Gladstone earned a Golden Globe for playing DiCaprio's Osage wife, who's always a step or two ahead of her dumdum of a spouse. On Apple+.
  9. 5/16/64 vs Giants - Duke Snider, Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal, Orlando Cepeda, Warren Spahn
  10. Today I learned that Kevin Appier had 1,994 career strikeouts. Not 2,000 or more, as I may or may not have guessed when playing Immaculate Grid this morning.
  11. I dunno. Nimmo took a big step forward defensively in 2022 and seemed to take a big step backward last season. So I guess this kind of improves the team. But "get a center field glove" wasn't on my list to Santa this year. Bader's main value is as a fill in when you need a Yankee and Cardinal for Immaculate Grid and you've already used Carlos Beltran.
  12. Also, Rickey Henderson had 297 career home runs. Not 300 or more, as some people on this board may have guessed.

  14. If I give you a dollar today, and you invest it in US Government bonds (which are considered to be 100% safe) at today's interest rates, which are close to 5% annually, in 10 years you'd have 1.05^10, or $1.63. So $1.63 paid 10 years from now is considered to be more or less the same as $1 today. Without getting into all the twists and turns and subtleties of how it's handled tax-wise and what's considered to be risk-free, that's the basic idea.
  15. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=142586 time=1702174071 user_id=68] Ohtani's new salary, accounting for inflation and adjusted for present value, comes out to about $25M a year (AAV).
  16. Stupid money, unless the deferrals are so far down the road that the $700M is more like $400M in today's dollars, which is entirely possible.

Mike Phillips as a Met/Giant surprised me at only 0.04%. I may be just at the exact right age to think that more Met fans would think of Mike Phillips.

  19. I think we definitely want to keep that Alonso guy.
  20. Preston Wilson Carlos Gomez
  21. He was on my fantasy team the year that he had something like 10 home runs and 102 RBI. Not sure he ever hit double figures in home runs again, and pretty near certain he never came close to 100 RBIs otherwise. (after checking - 1997, 17 HR, 119RBIs, along with a .372 BA. 4 other seasons of 10+ HRs. I got a lot of grief for overpaying for Gwynn and his one dimensional fantasy contributions before the season, and it was a lot of fun watching him prove the critics at my old job wrong.)
  22. ⚾️ Immaculate Grid 175 9/9: Rarity: 244 IMMACULATE! 🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩 Play at: https://immaculategrid.comhttps://immaculategrid.com @immaculategrid x @baseball_ref My first ever non-Saturday immaculate grid. 23. =kcmets post_id=138024 time=1695404719 user_id=53] I'm fine with Buck for one more year. If the Mets suck at the all-star break in '24 kick his sorry millionaire ass to the curb and bring in Bartolo.
  24. =TransMonk post_id=137043 time=1694266097 user_id=71] I'm ashamed to admit that I've been playing this game since this thread started and today was my first Immaculate.
