  1. Bay is due for a big Citi Field Moment. What better time than now?
  2. Will Venable now? How many spawns of ex-MLBers do the Padres have? Is Shawn Abner's kid hiding in the bullpen?
  3. Do you maybe hit for Cora and leave Blanco in? If the idea is you're going to go to 2 pinch hitters in the inning? Blanco has the only hit out of the infield today.
  4. Not unreasonable to think that they might need to make this one up later in the year, if tonight is a washout. Good chance at least one of these teams are at least sniffing around the Wild Card come September.
  5. I predict Carter will DH less than 50% of the AL games. Sprinkle in a Barajas here, a Wright there, and a couple of Tatis-against-a-lefty games (particularly if they see CC and Pettitte)

He lost it to human error, like sometimes it goes in baseball. And it wasn't a player and it was on the last out and..... Doesn't this kinda make him more famous than anyone else on that list? What happened to him had NEVER happened before in the history of the game. We all know he pitched one right now. But memories and history can be a little funny. Maybe history will treat him like Harvey Haddix, remembered for extended greatness before eventually falling short. But perhaps his name will become an asterisk to the story, if more people remember the name Jim Joyce. I am sure there were plenty of heroes for the Royals in game 6 of 1985, but I don't remember any of them. I do remember Don Denkinger, though. I think one of the Iorg brothers was involved in the final play, but I'd have to look it up.

(Too lazy to actually do it now, but if I had the power to change the past, then I'd make the effort.) Maybe not bunting LoDuca in the first inning after a leadoff double by Reyes (idiotically giving up an out in an inning wed eventually score three runs?). Ohh Willie.
  8. I'd undo the "we didn't get Hampton signed so let's panic-sign somebody" signing of Kevin Appier.
  9. Was the pine tar game the last time a commish "overturned" an outcome? That decision--despite the fact that it turned an MFY win into a loss--was far more ridiculous I think, than were Selig to change this. Though I really can't see where changing the call would in any way be in the "best interest" of the game.
  10. August 1973, sixteen inning game against the Reds at Shea...Seaver vs. Billingham. I know I watched many games before this one, but this was my first live Met game.
  11. I just remembered...was anybody else watching the bottom of the 8th of this game? Joyce made a bad call at the bag, allowing Damon to reach base when he was pretty clearly out, leading to two insurance runs. [u:2wh0ahaq]Two [/u:2wh0ahaq]bad calls by the same umpire in the same game
  12. Lost in the play is how far in the hole Migfatty Cabrera went to get to the ball.

Ump Jim Joyce just had the first paragraph of his Wikipedia and his obituary cemented for life. He might not make it out of Detroit, quite honestly. Holy moley is that a ballsy call by Joyce. Ballsy if he were really safe. Bad when the guy is clearly out.
  14. Horrible call. Howeva, Galarraga did snowcone the ball and it could--could--have appeared to Joyce to be loose in his glove. But he has to see that. Great catch by Austin Jackson to lead off the 9th BTW. Joe Magrane on MLB Network begging Detroit PD to give Joyce security escort back to his hotel.
  15. MLB Network covering it.
  16. clever names being ignored so far.
  17. I get three cracks at this? OK, NL-East familiarity is my clue: 1. Anybody guess Chipper Jones? 2. Since Castillo is on the list, and earlier in their careers I kinda conflated the two: Christian Guzman? 3. Not Craig Counsell?
  18. I would have assumed most of Ted Kazanski's home runs were bombs.

  20. Yeah, I know, and I would make the trade. My question about Hanley is I don't know if he has a defensive position long-term.
  21. Despite his problems the last couple of days, why on earth would the Marlins do this?
  22. Edgy DC wrote: [*]Jerry pinch-hit a lesser batter for a better batter only to call for a bunt. That's bad baseball and it plays into archetypes that only guys who play the middle fo the diamond know how to get a bunt down. And he compounded it by keeping the bunt on even after Castillo went to second on the wild pitch. And compounded it further by keeping the bunt on with a 3-1 count, this with Matthews up, a guy who we keep hearing has to "get it going". Infuriating.

    Really?

Since someone else brought up his name in this thread, there are rumors that St. Joe will not be out in La La land beyond this year (ownership issues, conflict with Colletti, maybe). You just know that if he's unemployed and there is a Met opening the Harper/Klapisch/Madden wing of the NY media will be all over it.
