  1. I assume he meant without ever winning a division title. Leyland, Bochy, and Dusty all have done so.
  2. It's a big deal in my house. 7-y.o. little Solo thinks it is important for the Mets to come in third (in his mind that would be good for them after their 2009 finish). The Marlins have a one-game lead on our heroes in Flushing. So how does the final week shape up for the Mets and Fish? Florida has 3 playoff-implication games at the struggling Braves, then four at home with the "just end the season" Pirates, while the Mets are home for four with the Brew Crew and three with the Nats. Here are the pitching matchups. MON Fla (Sanabia) at ATL (Hanson) Mil (Bush) at NYM (Pelfrey) TUE Fla (Sanchez) at Atl (Hudson) Mil (Wolf) at NYM (Niese) WED Fla (Miller) at Atl (Lowe) Mil (Gallardo) at NYM (Dickey) THU Pit (Duke) at Fla (Volstad) Mil (Rogers) at NYM (Gee) FRI Pit (Maholm) at Fla (Mendes) Was (Maya ) at NYM (Misch) Sat Pit (Morton) at Fla (Sanabia) Was (Hernandez) at NYM (Pelfrey) Sun TBD
  3. I could see Wally being asked to go manage in Binghamton next year, or somewhere else up the organizational chain from Brooklyn. If I were Wally, I'd find that preferrable to being bench coach to Bobby V. I'd also prefer that if Bobby V wanted a bench coach, that he'd be the one picking the guy, and not have that guy thrust on him by the organization.
  4. Welcome, Lefty Specialist. In these ten years, the Mets have had the highest payroll in the National League 7 times (once they were second, and two years, 2010 included, they were third). I realize payroll isn't always the key to winning, but that's a lousy ROI no matter how you look at it. source http://content.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/salaries/totalpayroll.aspx?year=2001
  5. I'm going on Wednesday and Saturday of next week. I'll be missing them greatly as the calendar gets deeper into October with the realization that it is a long, long way to April 1.
  6. Little Solo, bless his 7-year old heart, really wants the Mets to finish in 3rd place. "That's good for the Mets, right dad?" So, yeah, we're watching, at least a little bit of each game.
  7. Backman is as beloved in New York as a Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray soda. WTF? Does anybody drink that crap? They tempt their fans with Lou Piniella and Dusty Baker, I don't recall the Met-Nation all-night bender that had us being tempted by Dusty Baker. Bengie Molina is seeking a catching gig? Meh -- we can land Rod Barajas! And this was a bad move why?
  8. The whole player mutiny thing (deserved or not) might be a red flag.
  9. As far as trading Reyes goes: did Rosenthal even watch the Mets without him the last two years? They're a lot closer to winning a world series with him than without him.
  10. Ownership being what it is, this can't be the most secure job, can it? Also interesting: Torre does not say that he is done managing
  11. Come on Lucas. A nice 4-for-4 night might get you back on the interstate.
  12. I'm going with Tejada, but in previous Septembers, Castillo rode the bench watching guys like Ramon Martinez get important starts. Yet he still keeps coming back. I'm not so quick to assume that just because Hernandez is getting playing time that Castillo will not be back next year, especially on the final year of his contract. My fear is that he'll get dealt for "somebody else's headache", and the team will be saddled with an even worse contract (I'm looking at you, Chone Figgins).

  14. So Edgy, how about that Lucas Duda?
  15. If I'm Teufel, and with the years I've put into the organization, I'd be a little irked that Oberkfell, Backman, Mazzilli, and Melvin were getting consideration while I'm not. And I don't know how you define juice, but at this point I'd say Wally has more juice than Mazzilli or Melvin.

The alternative-- on their salaries-- is probably a motel in which your neighbors are only your neighbors an hour at a time. 20-year-old A-ball dudes aren't renting Park Slope sublets, man. I realize most of them are not multi-million dollar high draft picks. I figured the team would help them find housing...but calling it a dormitory?
  17. "Downtown Brooklyn dormitory"? Is this prep school?
  18. On the Cyclones stat page, I count 51 credited sacrifices. Seems high in a short season, since it does not take into account botched sacrifice attempts or players who may have been moved up another slot in the organization.
  19. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: According to this recap, Wally wasted a leadoff double in the first inning on a bunt for a one-run lead his team promptly gave right back, then used his whole bullpen and hung on praying after his closer loaded the bases in the 9th. Yeah, perfect Mets manager. Looks like he actually waited till the bags were full to bring on his closer in the 9th. Interesting he did not do the "I've got a less-than-three-run lead in the last inning, I've got to bring in my closer" thing, going against the grain, letting Bennett start the 9th after finishing the 8th, then even keeping him in for an additional hitter after loading the bases with nobody out. Maybe that was foolhardy to keep him in that long, but I appreciate not doing the knee-jerk closer thing at the start of the inning.
  20. Missing from just about every article linked in this thread is actual evidence that Met hierarchy is in fact angry about what happened. Are there any quotes (attributed or unattributed) that I missed? All I see things are like Rubin says "word filtered that the Wilpons were particularly perturbed".
  21. You know the Cyclones must be big in Brooklyn if they can get a guy named Gersh Kuntzman to come out last night.
  22. batmagadanleadoff wrote: He's still my favorite Met this season, but fuck R.A. Dickey on this one. What did he do or say that was so bad?
  23. And now Track Suit chimes in: http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets/2010/09/walter-reed-controversy-sure-d.html Wonder who the young Met who tried to speak up was, and the veteran who shot him down?
  24. Beltran, Castillo, and Ollie skip the Mets visit to Walter Reed Hospital. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2010/09/09/2010-09-09_awol_mets_irk_brass.html Beltran seems to have an excuse; Castillo gets the willies; and Ollie's not talking. Also absent from the article: any real evidence from McCarron that the front office is in fact upset. I must say that reading the comments on the article are, shall we say, eye-opening.
