  1. Maz hit 3rd during his second tour with the Mets? The Mets were loaded in 87. Was there some big injury bug that caused him to hit 3rd?
  2. ]Ozzie Guillen said: "The Mets are the most unbelievable team: Boom-bah, wow, what a job they are doing," Boom-bah, wow will now be my catch-phrase whenever the Mets do something good. Thanks, Oz, you lunatic.
  3. The Beatles also played the Forest Hills tennis stadium two years before they played Shea -- an outdoor stadium, albeit a smaller one. Does that mean when they tear that place down they should put a Beatles plaque up there? Is the Beatles appearance there more important than all the US Opens contested there? http://www.rarebeatles.com/photopg7/fh82864.htm edit: the Beatles also played Municipal Stadium in Kansas City, then the home of the Chiefs, before they played Shea the first time.
  4. The DP started by Backman to end a game against the Cardinals in April 86 ranks in the top 5 for me. No chance it will make ESPNs list.
  5. Put an outline where the bases and basepaths were, draw a line where the outfield fence is, then let everyone imagine what it was like to be there, and fondly recall their most vivid memories, whatever they may be.
  6. My upper deck reserved ticket for 86 Game six was $30. I paid $50 for it.
  7. What's "roll call"?
  8. I'm wondering how John Gibbons survives after two very public blow-ups with players, whether they were his fault or not.
  9. I actually thought of Clint Hurdle, in the dugout as the opposing manager. He played for the Mets in 1985 and 1987, but not 1986. In 1986 he was with the Cardinals. That's gotta hurt. And to toss out a "should not"...Bobby Ojeda should not have worn the tucked-in uniform.
  10. NL East: NY Mets NL Central: St. Louis NL West: Los Angeles NL Wild Card: Cincinnati AL East: NY Yankees AL Central: Detroit AL West: Oakland AL Wild Card: Chicago (10 points for each correct pick) NL Divisional Series: NY Mets, LA Dodgers AL Divisional Series: Chicago, Detroit (25 points for each correct pick) NL Pennant Winner: NY Mets AL Pennant Winner: Detroit (50 points for each correct pick) World Series Champion: NY Mets You really didn't think I'd pick someone else, did you?
  11. Wow, that is just devastating.

    '86 yo

Hojo was already in the game, though, wasn't he? Didn't he strike out for Elster in the 9th? So they were already down to their third shortstop (damn Davey hitting for Raffy in the fifth inning!).

    '86 yo

Color me shocked that neither El Sid nor Mitchell clearly won the award for Fattest 86er. Ed Hearn and Doug Sisk are clearly giving them a run for their money.
  14. Pedro on the DL will mean he's in top shape in October. I'm not sure how one can draw this conclusion. You may be right, but I don't know how you can say this with certainty now. I'm not panicking, but the Nady-Roberto trade, especially when it doesn't seem Bert gets appearances in meaningful spots, looks like it could have been a mistake.
  15. They've been battling for years, highlighted by Mushnick taking M & MD (particularly Francesa) to task for his comments about Israel in the aftermath of 9/11.But that's not the only disagreement they've had.If you ever hear Russo discussing "Mr. Sloppy" he means Mushnick.
  16. The only thing I can say on behalf of the Yanks coach is that parents can be hell. Mr and Mrs Yank want little Jeffy Yank to win a championship, so they'll give their coach grief if they lose because the coach pitched to the opposition's best player. And you know what, his kids wanted to win too. On the whole, though, I think it's a bush move. Incidentally, my little league didn't allow intentional walks, up until you got to age 13.
  17. I didn't realize it was THAT Michael Tucker. How old is he now, about 58?
  18. I knew there was a Met Hall of Fame, but I did not know you could visit it at Shea. I don't know about Hernandez or Carter, but I'd retire Piazza's number (maybe the first year of the new ballpark?). I want some retired numbers of people I can look back fondly on their Met careers. Right now of the four retired #s, 2 are managers and one was never a Met.
  19. Hmmm. Buster Olney on Mike & Mike this morning said that the Nationals pulled him back off waivers after someone claimed him, meaning that he would be with Washington all season. Usually Buster is pretty spot-on, but he flubbed this one.
  20. ]LoDuca and hot wife scheduled to come on WFAN tomorrow and make a joint statement. This is as bad as Gregg Jefferies's open letter to the fans.
  21. I started this thread and give him the kiss of death. I was kind of hoping it would last a little longer.
  22. When I look over my shoulder, I don't see the '64 Cardinals anywhere.
  23. Names I loved hearing Murph say: Mike Schmidt Heathcliff Slocum Benny DiStefano Mike Kingery I'm sure I can come up with others if I think some more. One aspect about Murph's radio calls that bothered me was on fly balls that had a chance to leave the park. He'd often say "Maybe....Let's watch!" Well, Murph, if I'm listening to you I'm probably unavailable to watch
  24. This is not a KTE, and if I'm stepping on anybody's KTE toes, let me know. I thought this deserved its own topic. Utley extended his hitting streak to 35 last night, the longest streak for a lefthanded hitter in over forty years. Since I've been following baseball, only Rose, Molitor, and Rollins have longer streaks. Now he comes to Shea for three, the start of an odd scheduling stretch in which the Mets and Phils play ten games in 23 days. Looking ahead in the schedule, if Utley were to get near Dimaggio territory, assuming no rainouts and/or days he takes off, games 56 and 57 would be at Shea.
  25. ]BEHIND THE BAG!!!! That was Scully. You meant "GETS BY BUCKNER!!!!" If you can ever get a hold of it, try and get a copy of Murph calling NLCS Game 6, from the 9th through 16th innings. I had a tape of highlights from that game that is now long lost. But Murph was unbelievable.
