  1. .289 SLG in Norfolk. Ouch.
  2. Red Sox standing pat? Somewhat surprising. And no news yet on Soriano?
  3. FAN just said the Mets will have nothing further to report. So no Linebrink?
  4. My 6-year old daughter loved him. When we went to a game in May, he hit a big HR to center to help the Mets in a win, over, ironically, his current team. It was the first time she saw the apple in person. Now I have to tell her he's gone. Sniff.
  5. He really could show he's the best CF in the game, what with that ballpark and Manny Ramirez and Willy Mo Pena surrounding him.
  6. Perez has been a mess this year, and he just gave up 8 earned runs in a third of an inning in AAA yesterday. But I don't mind taking a shot at a soon to be 25-y.o. lefty who has at least shown he can pitch at this level.
  7. Unreal. Hope Duaner had his seat belt on. I'm getting flashbacks to Bobby Ojeda and a hedge trimmer.
  8. ]They'll screw up the scoreboard. We'll get one of those scoreboards with rotating out of town scores... Good point. I am so used to the current Shea scoreboard that it will take some getting used to a new one.
  9. Page Two Chimes in on baseball card memories (pay attention to the DJ Gallo portion, he must be Yancy's buddy): http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=baseballcards/060725
  10. I remember this game fondly, but two things that had escaped me were the HoJo reaching on passed ball, but then cut down on DP in the 9th, and that the winning rally was started by none other than Ed Hearn.
  11. I certainly hope there's a better picture of Valentin's wife somewhere.
  12. How are we supposed to muster any offense when we're dodging all these bullets?
  13. Show of hands: is "woman" the first thing you think when you hear the name "Norris Bosch"?
  14. Mazzilli had some nice moments on his return as well.
  15. Different sport, but this topic made me think of the Dolphins' Killer Bees of 1984. Nine of the eleven defensive starters for Miami in Super Bowl XIX, plus three defensive reserves, had last names that began with the letter B. Didn't help against Montana and the Niners.
  16. I decided to look up Mets all-star performances of the past today and was totally surprised to see that Met position players had driven in a grand total of four runs in All-Star Game history. According to UMDB, only Mazzilli with 2 rbi in '79, HoJo with one in '89, and Piazza with one in '02 drove in All Star runs. Am I the only one surprised by this?
  17. This is the same as the Mets getting swept in Houston in 1986... I thought they lost 3 out of 4 that series. Didn't the Reds sweep the Mets at Shea that year? On edit: yes, on July 17-20, the Mets beat Houston in game one of a four game set, then lost the next three. Earlier in July, the Reds took a three game set at Shea. The Mets also lost four in a row at Shea to the Cardinals, but it was the middle four games of a rain-out produced six game series.
  18. Worries? Yes. Milledge, El Duque, what's up with Lo Duca. Worried? Not really. Losing streaks and slumps happen. The Tigers recently lost five of seven to the Sox and Yanks. They're looking pretty good right now. The Cardinals just lost eight in a row, and they'll still win their division in a walk. The Mets will be fine. Omar will make some adjustments here and there, but overall I still think they're the best team in the NL.
  19. Rochester only used 6 pitchers! And two of them were only in for the 33rd inning. So four guys combined to go the first 32. Imagine going 8 innings and having only the third longest outing for your team that day!
  20. Their old buddy Kent Mercker was in the opposing bullpen today.
  21. Will be attending tomorrow's game with my father, our first trip together to Shea since 1983 (as a rambunctious 16-year-old, I could no longer take his "root for the other team to get under my skin" routine, and vowed never to go back). Well, we're going back. But I won't let the fact that he'll surely have a little wager on the Reds ruin my day.
  22. ]Quote: The Braves are 11 out and legally dead. No. No they aren't. True. But the paramedics are on scene.
  23. Hmm. A friend and I had a little discussion the other day, a "who would you rather have" chat about 3-4-5 hitters. Hernandez-Carter-Strawberry vs. Beltran-Delgado-Wright Now if we were not strictly talking about the lineup, I'd go with the 86 group because I thought Keith brought so much leadership, and so did Carter, to a lesser extent. But strictly on offense, I think you take the 06 guys. Probably best to wait till the season's over to see how the season plays out, though.
  24. Wouldn't Sayonara be the more appropriate, albeit cliched, thread title?
  25. ]It's not, after all, a secret that Milledge arrived at Shea as a kid who seems to demand extra attention, more than a little of it negative. Did Milledge "demand" all the extra attention, or was it thrust on him by a media horde hungry for a story?
