  1. I kind of like having the AL doormats on our schedule.
  2. The perfect team to start a road winning streak against.
  3. So how did these guys get 18 runs off us again?
  4. It doesn't take more than a flimsy justification. Maine was DL'd before the Mets could confirm that something wasn't right with his shoulder, and guys have been shelved for psychological reasons. It just has to be something the league will buy, or at least not protest.
  5. I feel worse for Joyce than I do for Gallaraga. Although, like players after a bad day, sometimes the best thing to do is go right back out there. I've never really understood the resistance to replays. I don't see why it would have been so hard before this happened to figure out that this is the kind of thing you never want to happen and it's really easy to prevent.
  6. The Mets needed a righfielder and leadoff hitter after 2000, their manager knew the Japanese game better than anybody in America -- and Steve Phillips allowed somebody else to make the highest bid for Ichiro.
  7. I would imagine that any veteran on the Orioles would take a one-way ticket anywhere at this point. Wigginton has always been streaky, and he's just had the best two months of his career. I've always liked him, but we'd be buying very high.
  8. The options are to give him a serious opportunity to make a role for himself in the pen and then drop him if he fails, or just cut the crap and drop him now. Keeping him in limbo is a luxury the Mets can't afford.

Though, even he has a ways to go to catch Vince Coleman for the crown of biggest jerk I wish wasn't on the Mets. Ollie's saving grace is that if he tossed firecrackers at fans in the parking lot, he wouldn't come close to blowing them up. He'd blow up his own car.
  10. Done in by one bad inning against the Mets? As long as we're one complication with Niese away from a repeat of Saturday night's situation, I'd consider putting a claim in.
  11. It's a start, no pun intended. He wasn't likely to be a major-league asset this season anyway, so the short term goal is simply to right the ship.
  12. I hope Hessman is not playing exclusively at third base down there. If he could play second or right without making a mess of things, he could be a serious asset for us.
  13. That's really sad, and shocking.
  14. Ironically, a lesser defensive centerfielder than Morgan would have probably realized that one was beyond him and played it more conservatively. I'd be curious to see if the other outfielder were hustling all the way to back it up, though. At any rate, that was tremendous hustle by Pagan and hopefully it lights a spark
  15. I don't like messing around with a very young arm, so while I'd have preferred to see him start in AAA this year, I think it would have been better for Mejia to stick with relieving once he was committed there. It's not hard to bring up a starter to use in the pen late in the year if he fills a need, but it's not clear that stretching a young arm out mid-season is as benign (see Joba rules).
  16. I guess Plan A is to send him down and see if he can work through this, if he's willing. Obviously nobody would claim him -- that would mean taking on his contract. He has the right to refuse a demotion, though, and if it came to that we might as well give him a shot as a LOOGY. Lefties are hitting .182 against him this year and only hit .200 against him last year, so why not? The alternative would be releasing him and guaranteeing zero return for the rest of our investment in him, which we could still do in a few weeks if the pen and Ollie don't mix. As for the rotation spot, I don't think we have a better alternative than Takahasi. Our pen is actually very deep -- keep in mind that Igarashi will be back soon and Parnell and Calero are still in AAA -- so it's not like he's irreplaceable in his current role.

When he swings the bat well you wonder how he's not one of the league's star players, then you look at his overall numbers and wonder how it can possibly be the same person. My guess is if we keep him around long enough we'll find out. I'm sticking with what I said in October. He genuinely comes across as a good guy, but he's a platoon player at best. I figure it's only a matter of time before Carter forces the Mets to give him regular playing time against righties.
  18. Notice that Carbo was mad at being outed, but he doesn't appear to have denied what Keith said.

For instance, I heard that someone attending one of these got curbstomped by bystanders recently, simply for wearing the wrong colors; another man's daughter was vomited on, merely because he asked the offender to protest more civilly. Often, protesters get so rowdy, the police must tase and tackle them. Why, once, for a good while, the authorities saw fit to establish a temporary court to process unruly protesters on-site, because their comportment posed such a hazard to bystanders. Wait... that's not Canadian G-20 protests, or Toronto? I must be thinking of some other place. Well I heard that the G-20 protesters booed Santa Claus.
  20. Better late than never, but better never late.
  21. Romo gives up a lot of HR's to righthanded batters and has reverse platoon splits in general, so walking Davis to get to Barajas was a bad idea on paper and in practice. Citi doesn't look so intimidating for hitters now, does it?
  22. Good point. I'm really not sure when I'll be free right now (between proposal writing at work and an assortment of family-related issues, I'm seriously overbooked), but I'll let you know.
  23. You could argue that Omar misread the market early on and jumped to sign guys who weren't better bets than what was available in late January. But to be fair, our pen looks pretty good on the whole and we still have Parnell and Calero in the minors and Igarashi on the DL. Ultimately Minaya paid a good price overall for what he's gotten from the pen so far; it's just that some of the bargains have worked out a lot better than Escobar wound up doing.
