  1. Funny, I always thought that Howard and Rollins got too much credit while Utley, who before this year was a much of a perennial lock to make the top five in WAR as Pujols, didn't get enough. In Rollins' case at least, I always assumed it had everything to do with him being more quotable and nothing to do with color. Howard I just think is overrated -- he's a one-dimensional player in a power hitter's park, and the contract he just got is obscene. But the writers have rewarded Rollins and Howard instead of Utley, and these same writers apparently give Utley preferential treatment. Am I missing something?
  2. http://www.theonion.com/articles/nation-disappointed-by-great-world-series-matchup,18358/ My apologies if this got posted already, but it's worth sharing.
  3. Wife: Kristen Lee. She may look like she's still in school, but she's our last best hope for Cliff's non-Yankeeness. If you jump ahead to "Rangers or Yankees?" in this article, you'll see that Mommy likes things as they are. We'll see. She was apparently harassed by Yankee fans at the Stadium when Lee pitched last week. It would be rather amusing if a handful of idiots played a major role in screwing their own team's long-term fortunes.
  4. It came out the summer I turned 7, no other movie has ever left as big of an impression on me, and I can't imagine one ever will. The adult me would concede that Empire was the superior movie (and lament the degree to which the franchise tanked from there). But the original Star Wars still holds up really well, and will always hold that special place.

He didn't return to Cleveland until September where he appeared in just four games of mop-up relief. The next year he went 22-3 and won the CY award. Go figure. And the Indians couldn't give him away that offseason. If I remember right, the Mets were actually one of the teams they talked to. Funny how things work sometimes.

Oh, how I want the Phillies to PAY for giving him off to Seattle. I'm sick of all the praise getting heaped on Amaro, when Minaya never made as bad a deal as that one. He made $9M this year and you couldn't afford him? Even after making the Blue Jays pay half of Halladay's contract, which was an outrage? And then you extended Ryan Howard's contract by how much, for how long? Some people just deserve to lose.

  8. Frayed Knot wrote: Be nice if Holt could start to straighten himself out. Dude just about fell off a cliff this year. The guy's still young and has upside, but he's basically starting from scratch at this point. Nice to see he got off to a good start.
  9. I'm sick of seeing teams get to the playoffs and then play like deer in the headlights. Especially when I'm rooting for them to beat the Yankees or the Phillies.
  10. So I'm rooting for the Rays, Reds, Giants, and (of course) the Twins. At this point, I'll settle for one of the four avoiding a sweep.
  11. Duda doesn't strike me as having anything left to prove in the minors, and he did seem to adjust nicely. 10 extra-base hits in 84 AB's is excellent, and I'm sure singles would have come in time (and will come next year). Evans and Carter likewise have nothing left to prove in the minors, and if they just project as bench players, well that's two less roster spots to try and fill. I also think that if Fernando Martinez can stay healthy, everything else will fall into place quickly. But that's a big if until proven otherwise. Pagan is our best all-around outfielder right now, so benching him makes no sense. I think the window of opportunity for winning with Beltran has closed, and I'm not sure if the window for winning with Bay ever opened. I'd be content to free up some cash to spend elsewhere.
  12. He definitely had his ups and downs. I think people forget that he did everything right in the 05-06 offseason. People also tend to get on his case for not doing enough big things, but the little things in the 06-07 offseason were what set the team back. That year, and his willingness to badly overpay to hold on to easily replaceable parts, did him in.
  13. "I really don't think your bench is deep enough."
  14. I'm partial to Psycho (with The Birds a close second), but my wife would go with North by Northwest were she on this forum.
  15. He has more minor league seasoning (at least at high levels) than Murphy did, and a bit more major league time than Murph did after 2008, so I'm confident we'll get what we're seeing so far. I see him starting the season in a platoon role -- lefthanded catchers generally have to hit like Brian McCann to get starts against lefties. His glove is fine and he handles the pitchers. The power is nonexistent, which would be a much bigger issue if he weren't a catcher. He's still an asset if he can keep his OBP north of .350.
  16. I got really worried that Cargo wouldn't get back to me. I had him last year, and had a hunch on him, but I didn't want to grab him too early. (The other guy I talked myself out of grabbing too early was Jonathan Broxton. Whew!) A big key for me was that a few people autodrafted the second half. I was grabbing guys like Kelly Johnson and Scott Rolen while other people were autodrafting guys who had been benched or demoted. The one thing I did wrong was let Hong Chih Kuo go after two appearances. I was looking for one more reliever, and decided I could do better. I had some super luck as well. The fact that Tommy Hanson has fewer wins than Tyler Cippard isn't such a bad thing when you also have Tyler Clippard. Basically, everything went right. Even Lucas Duda is contributing (9 RBI in 36 AB's since I picked him up). But thanks to Vic and everybody else. Now to figure out how to top this.
  17. Looks like Fielder got walked early and often in RBI situations, and McGehee has reaped the benefit statistically. I guess 10 minutes with Rick isn't enough these days. The first five hitters in Milwaukee's lineup could match up with anybody's in the NL, and yet they're three games behind the Mets. Tells you everything about their pitching you need to know.
  18. Turner has nothing left to prove in the minors. I don't think that Havens and Tejada can say that. I think we have enough in-system depth at the position to justify not bringing somebody in right away. If it's June, we're in it, and we can do better at the position, we can go shopping then (provided all our spending money isn't already tied up).
  19. Nice going Jeff, just promise me you won't look at strike three against Mo in the playoffs.
  20. Now they're 81-60, and a game up on the Braves. 18-10 since their last series with us. Their offense still looks underwhelming. Werth has cooled down. Utley's starting to get hits (6 multi-hit games in his last ten), but the power isn't there. Rollins is playing, but not particularly well. Howard has been very hot lately, though (a .324 BA and 4 HRs in September). The biggest difference has been pitching. Hamels has caught fire, and Oswalt has been solid (though still not massively better than J. A. Happ). Lidge and Madson have been lights out in the pen, combining for 3 ER in 40 innings since the beginning of August. The pitching matchups are: Friday: Mejia vs. Halladay Saturday: Pelfrey vs. Kendrick Sunday: Niese vs. Oswalt Halladay has only been so-so lately, and hopefully that will continue. Kendrick is just not that good.
  21. The irony is that if the Mets don't go and visit wounded soldiers, nobody gets mad at anybody, and nobody makes nasty comments.
  22. seawolf17 wrote: Started working on Team Williams, but it's VERY outfield-heavy, and the pitching staff is dreadful. I looked at them too. Could you count Smokey Joe Williams as a pitcher? He was 41-3 in the Negro Leagues in 1914, and outdueled a number of prominent major leaguers in exhibition games -- including Walter Johnson, at least twice.
  23. So CF, I take it Davey is your manager?
  24. MFS62 wrote: Last night's start, his first in AAA: 8 IP, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K, 1 HR, 10-2 GB-FB, 1.13 ERA Impressive. And a no decision. So he'd fit right in!
  25. Cohoon pitched eight shutout innings on Sunday (five days rest), and really appears to be on track after his initial struggles with the double jump.
