  1. Not Dunn. I would not trust a one-dimensional power hitter coming from that sandlot to here. Sean Casey would be a better fit. And why not ask about Ryan Freel, while we're at it? Freel leading off and Reyes batting second would make a lot of catchers nervous.
  2. Fonzie can get timely hits and draw walks, which would benefit the club. Plus it would undo some bad karma from the 2002 offseason, when he was deemed expendable but the Mets believed they could still win with Alomar/Vaughn/Cedeno/Burnitz. The intriguing part is Jason Schmidt. He's an ace if he's healthy. What's his contract status? And would ten minutes with Rick be enough?
  3. Plus, he's come undone in the second half of seasons. He doesn't have the stamina to be a good starter, but he did look really good for 5 innings yesterday. I think the pen might be a very good place for him, provided he can throw strikes.
  4. The loser in this deal is Urbina. He was on a roll when Percival was out, and there are a lot of teams in the league for whom Urbina would have been an upgrade as the closer. The Phillies aren't one of them. Are the Mets one of them? Maybe, but the team would not have benefited from that kind of controversy. He's about the same level as Looper, and while they had a good working arrangement in Florida, that was before Looper ever became a full-time closer. At least with Graves, Looper has no reason to watch his back.Polanco fills a need for Detroit -- they still have a couple of positions not being filled by major league level players -- but I can't believe somebody who really needed a closer wouldn't have offered more.I think the deal is break-even, unless Wagner goes down at some point.
  5. It's funny how psychology works with bench players sometimes. Howe brings Valent in, shows him some confidence, Valent thrives. Randolph brings in Anderson and Woodward, shows them confidence at Valent's expense, they thrive and Valent doesn't. Hopefully Valent will get his swing back in AAA.
  6. I would think it would have to be Aybar. We're paying DeJean too much (not my idea!) to demote him. I'll be upset if they demote Heath Bell or Heilman.
