  1. I really like the way his numbers have improved as he's climbed up the ladder.
  2. If I'm Omar, I'd have called up a 7th reliever the minute the game ended. Then again, if I were Omar I'd have done that a week ago. I feel bad for Fernando Nieve. After being run into the ground the first month, Manuel appears to have forgotten that he exists. I get the feeling that Frankie needs somebody getting in his face on a fairly regular basis to get optimum results. Preferably not himself, and preferably not after an embarrassing implosion, but whatever gets him mad out there is OK with me.
  3. Two, please.
  4. On edit: screw the good jump, I forgot that wasn't even the tying run. Just embarrassing.
  5. Tejada scores big-time points in my book for having the presence of mind to block the base. Utterly inexcusable baserunning, though. Sure you want to get a good jump, but not at the risk of letting a struggling pitcher get out of the inning without throwing home. It's funny, by the numbers K-Rod is having exactly the kind of season he put up regularly in Anaheim, and yet nothing ever seems easy with him.
  6. Oh, so Madoff guaranteed the Mets 12%. I feel much better about this now.
  7. 8% interest compounded over a full decade? Can I start an account with Steve Phillips today?
  8. It all starts with failing to throw strikes to a guys with a sub-.600 career OPS against lefties (and a .357 OPS so far this year). I can forgive not making the play on the Morgan bunt, and I can shrug my shoulders at Manuel leaving him in to face Guzman even though he's much better righthanded. But Harris was about as likely to get a hit in that spot as a pitcher would have been, and walking him is just not excusable.
  9. The Phillies are pitching Halladay into the ground. Eight hits in the last three innings, and it doesn't look like the thought even occurred to them to go to the pen.

He probably starts every day by opening his locker and staring down at a rumpled picture of Fernando Tatis that's taped to the inside of the door, muttering under his breath "I'm coming for you." Later And he damn well should be. I have to wonder if Tatis would even still be here if Hessman was healthy.
  11. His first start in AA was a rocky one (5 runs and 11 hits in 5.2 IP), but it was also a winning one, thanks largely to a 4 for 5, 3 R, 3 RBI, 1 HR performance by Nick Evans.
  12. Congrats on the ho-hitter. Now if only we can get a Met to pitch one.
  13. And the reason he's not going to St. Lucie? Because he's going to Binghamton instead. His first start is tomorrow.
  14. Mejia was more valuable than any of the three prospects the Phillies got when the deal happened, and he's a lot more valuable now as the top two guys in that deal have crashed and burned this year. (I hope the Phillies fans enjoyed Lee, and their dominance of the division, while it lasted.) The Mariners set Lee's market themselves, and Mejia is worth more than two months of Lee. Even given Tak's performance tonight, I don't see the rotation as it's currently structured as being broken and in need of fixing. It's certainly possible that midnight will strike for Dickey and Takahashi, but I'm willing to wait a month to see if it actually happens. I'd be sniffing around instead for an eighth-inning guy and an upgrade at second base.
  15. Other than the two games in San Diego, Valdes was good for us. Hopefully he can get some regular work, right his ship, and get back up here before too long.
  16. Chad Ochoseis wrote: The Mets, no strangers to players accused of sleazy sexcapades OK, beats me. I can think of Ambiorix Burgos (which was sleazy, but not a "sexcapade") and, if you want to stretch to recent scandals involving Mets of yesteryear, Art Shamsky's divorce looniness. Anything else this decade? I'll wager she was thinking that some of Steve Phillips' misadventures came out while he was still employed here.
  17. Was Hidalgo 2005? Hamilton and Dunston were 1999.

Unless she was dragging a police officer or a security guard with her to the tennis court, that makes it kind of hard to convince anybody of a lack of consent. Which does not in any way, shape, or form exonerate Johan's behavior.
  19. Pagan hits righties much better than lefties (.864/.677) , Francoeur hits lefties much better than righties (.887/.684). The decision regarding what to do when Beltran is ready to play is not a difficult one, and shouldn't be made into one. That doesn't mean I wouldn't strongly consider playing Beltran in right when Pagan plays as well. But he'd have to have played there during his rehab. Beltran hit just fine in spite of his legs last year, and his bat is too valuable (i.e., too big of an upgrade over Francoeur against righties and Pagan against lefties) to even consider moving him this season. It's a fair subject for discussion over the offseason, but one thing at a time.
  20. Who is Mark Cohoon? Well, the 22-year-old just pitched three straight complete game shutouts for Savannah. He is 7-1 with a 1.30 ERA, a 75/17 K/BB ratio and 2 HRs in 90 IP covering 13 starts. He was 9-2 with a 2.15 ERA in 14 starts for Brooklyn last year. He's not overpowering, but he's evidently quite efficient with his pitches. (I'm assuming they have pitch counts in A ball, and he's going the distance without reaching his limit.) He does not appear to be making the jump to St. Lucie with Flores, however. At least not yet.
  21. When the glove finishes its career with a perfect game, it will get an express ticket to Cooperstown. One can dream... You're right about the naysaying, though. I think attgig should edit that unhappy face.
  22. I see no reason to panic. He's still comfortably above average. We may have to accept that we're paying for several more years of "elite" while getting "comfortably above average," but it's not like he's hurting the club every fifth day. As for the run support, that has a way of evening out in the long run. It's an issue if the lineup goes into a Santana game with a different mindset than they normally do, but I don't believe they do that and at any rate they have no reason to (especially when the results are negative).
  23. We can afford the luxury of using Takahashi in the pen when we have five better pitchers than him in the rotation. That time is not now, nor will it be when Maine comes off the DL. An excellent long reliever is less valuable than an adequate fifth starter, and so far Tak has been significantly better than adequate. Four of his six starts have been excellent, and one of the remaining two was unlucky. There is no present reason to think Maine can do better.
  24. I don't see how this affects his value. Even if the Mets were to trade him -- which I doubt -- nobody who acquires him will have anything to gain by putting him in their major league rotation this year. And there's no reason at all to think his long-term value as a starter, for the Mets or anybody else, is hurt by him being in the pen this year. As far as him helping the Mets as a starter this year, I never saw that as likely. And there's always a catch-22: if he were succeeding phenomenally as a reliever, you might say he could have been an effective starter. As it stands he's performing adequately as a major-league reliever, and probably wouldn't do as well in the rotation. It was a judgment call, Manuel decided there was a need for him in the pen, and here he is. I didn't agree with it, but I think jerking him around over the course of the season is more likely to have a long-term bad effect than keeping him where he is.
