Also, what does it do to your actual Ace? In Sproat's next-to-last start in the minors, he came in after the "opener" and got his ass kicked (7ER). I'm not sure whether he, their Ace, prepared the same way he would have for an actual start and that's what impacted his performance. BTW - welcome Jadewi - good first post. Later

That made me chuckle and think what two other managers of that era might have done. Earl Weaver would have waited for a three run homer and Gene Mauch would have done his usual unexpected and have the batter bunt for a base hit. Good analysis. Later

I can still hear how announcers pronounced, or tried to pronounce, some of those names. One pronounced A-mal-uh-fa ta no - throwing in the extra syllable WOR sports announcer Stan Lomax said CAM-uh-lo (instead of Ca-meal-e-o) PAS-kul I'm guessing that Jim Kaat was the last on that list to retire as a player. Seriously? Davey Johnson is given the AI treatment, just like any other passing baseballer? To us, he wasn't just like any other, and I find it demeaning to his legacy. That had no love in it, no humanity. We knew all that, or have read it in other obituaries. He was a real person, and his story deserved to be written by a real person. Later

Would you have thought he was ready after his first nine starts of the season, through which he had a 6.69 ERA? Or would you have brought him up after his appearance before his last one, in which he went 3.2IP 7H 7R 5ER 2BB 4K, raising his season's ERA to 4.50? Since that shaky start to the season, he has a 3.19 ERA and 86 strikeouts over 84 2/3 innings. But when, exactly, would you have said he was "ready" to be brought up before now? The bad outing was when they used him in relief in a "bullpen game". Maybe his head wasn't in that role, as he sees himself as a starter. But if you go back through the thread, you'll see that most of his recent appearances have been lights out. Later
