  1. I think we have our answer. Next question: Why does that card say "SAN DIEGO PADRES"? Because it a DIY digital card, using Marshall's real 1973 card and a Man From Topps photo. As you can see, Topps went with Marshall looking upwards so the cap logo wasn't visable as they doctored up the Met blues for Padre mustard yellow, yet kept pinstripes that the Padres wouldn't incorporate on uniforms for more than a decade!
  2. Okay, now I see its from this past summer, but for some reason it, and others like it, are being shared around social media platforms as a way to disparage the current Mayoral administration and decrying what would be an apparent return of Pre-Guliani NYC street life.
  3. From the "oh WHY couldn't it been a MFY piece of merch" department: Or appropriate for times when it seemed that the Mets were far from signing Cespedes, or really any time that it seems the Mets are...well...pissing away opportunities. The above accompanied a NY Post article on NYC relaxing lesser street crimes, like public urination for example. http://nypost.com/2015/07/10/apparently-its-now-ok-to-pee-on-the-streets-of-new-york-city/

It would have been better if the place was near a train stop. I think they wanted a bigger space than what Citi Field's McFadden's provided in the past. Also apparently the place is very Met friendly. But yeah, its roughly a 20 minute walk from the nearest train ride, which isn't bad on nice days, but not great for those who'd rather use mass transit. I do wonder if McFadden's didn't want to do it any more in case anyone thought there was an official connection with the Mets? I don't know.

His will be the first Mariner cap in the HoF as Randy Johnson's bears that of the D'Backs. This seems like an easy call as they were his draft team, he had his best years in Seattle, and he easily logged the most time there (almost 2x as much time as Cin & CHW combined) which makes him more a Mariner than Piazza is a Met. The only drawback is that he kind of whined his way out of town when forcing the trade that took him to the Reds, but I guess enough time has passed and any bad feelings are in the past. Looks like the team kept that number in mothballs since the time of his departure, breaking it out only for him again during his late career return so it's been 'unsullied' all the time during the interim. When Rickey Henderson signed there following his Met release, he requested #24 but was denied due to being Griffey's number. They tried to do the same with Randy Johnson's #51 but they capitulated to Ichiro's demands. I'd imagine #51 will get a dual retirement in Seattle when Ichiro finally hangs them up.

Cynical me thinks this is all to some degree calculated or bought and paid for on some level, but at least it gives fans what they want. I think 'calculated' is probably more accurate, he knows and the Wilpons know that staying friendly with each other is in both their best interests as far as good PR and future business opportunities. This is probably right. I think the Wilpons missed an opportunity last summer to retire his number and say "fuck you" to the Hall of Fame. Some may disagree about whether the number should be retired, but most Mets fans want this, and I think it could have been a great way for the Wilpons to endear themselves a bit. I think that's why he went into the Met Hall a few years back. I think that was as much of a fuck you to the Hall as it was to get a late season Citi Field sellout.

To be fair, I doubt Beltran elicits too many warm fuzzies with most of his fanbases to justify a "hot topic" debate over who's cap he'd wear. On top of that, I'd imagine he'd have a McGriff/Sheffield type of journey through the balloting process. perhaps, but lots of people I follow and talk are rabidly pro-Beltran in both cases. He's easily one of my favorite Mets all-time. I've seen lots of people prop up Billy Wagner as a HOFer and it looks like he's a one-and-done.

  11. That's an old hat on a 2015 card. What is this, 1969 again, when Topps was low in new photo stock and hadda use old and repeated images? And the year before they have him in the blue uni that replaced the all black ones! Hell, his Allen & Ginter and Topps Sticker cards this year show him in the alt road blues!
  12. Strawberry make the cut?
  13. Niese through the years with Topps Base cards
  14. Murphy's Topps Base and Update cards through the years: I'd imagine he'll pop up in the base set next year in a postseason highlight card, or two.
  15. Frayed Knot wrote: To that end (although it's impossible to know how much Fred directed this) Torborg was almost immediately hooked up with WFAN. The all-sports format was still fairly new in those days and it's certainly common enough to have a show with the local manager particularly when the station is also the flagship for the team and the relation between the team & station still in the early lovey-dovey stage. So lovey-dovey in fact that someone thought it would be a good idea if he were on EVERY DAY for a chat/Q&A with the mid-day hosts: the just then starting to bloom 'Mike and the Mad Dog' show. I remember Lupica took to calling him 'Jeff from Flushing' because he was on at least as often as even the most ambitious callers who were using the still newish medium to spout their views on all things sports. Needless to say the concept grew old after a short span and the weariness of his commitment started to show on air and the feel-good vibe gave way to the occasional testy exchanges which is certainly not what the NYM side of the pairing was hoping for. Torborg was even given a slot during their Super Bowl week coverage that January. Their producer at the time (probably still Chris Carlin at that point) had a tradition of having all the guests of the week have their names read in a list during end of the Friday show, and Torborg was on the master list of guests, to which both M&MD chastised the producer because Torborg was not a football spot, but rather a weekly spot that had been contracted for! In fairness, while I haven't listened to either ESPN NY or WFAN consistently in the afternoons in a long time, I'm pretty sure both NYC teams still have deals with sending the current skipper to one of the drive time Mikes for a weekly spot.

The one that didn't go to press. [insert witty line or meme about unused produced championship apparel for teams that didn't win ending up as donations to developing nations.]

Either way, I'm feeling more worried about Harvey in Game 5 tomorrow. Both in terms of Do or Die pressure or sending the Mets to KC with one win away.

Though it obviously didn't linger for weeks/months the way I thought it would based on initial social network platforms outrage (in terms of LGBT community members protesting both outside and inside Citi Field, or other stadiums where Murphy and the Mets played) it still does have some play in terms of how fans feel about his historic October. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/gay-met-fan-not-rooting-daniel-murphy-article-1.2408894

  23. Zvon wrote: Would you like that Steve Rogers Bob Miller card prize? Yes, but only if you give it to Steve and he gives it to me. I think I've given permission to move it along in the past. Which reminds me, I may PM you or Mags with a pretty decent sized list of cards that never were, not Met related though, at some point this offseason, for projects that may or may not get off the ground. OE: Actually now that I think of it, several Mets could be involved.
