=Fman99 post_id=111438 time=1666021311 user_id=86] This gives us the hope that we can watch the MFYs season end with a loss on their home field. Wouldn't that be funner ?

Chad ochoseis wrote: Fun fact: "Sponge Bob Square Pants" has become the Guardians' version of "Narco". It's the walkup music for Oscar Gonzalez, one of the many rookies who came out of nowhere to put up decent numbers for the team this year. He hit the 15th inning walk-off home run to knock off the Rays and the two-run walk-off single up the middle last night. Maybe a White Sox/Twin closer will troll them next year!

I watched the SB Nation Mariner History series of videos a couple of years ago (YouTube). And it gave me the impression that the fanbase couldn't care less if the Mariners lost, as long as this was a unique and quirky game. Seriously, the narrator made it seem that there is ZERO AGITA in the Mariner fanbase over wins, losses and championships. And they care ONLY about watching the great performances and the quirky happenstances that happen in baseball. Really makes it seem that they'd be happy even though they lost, because they witnessed history tonight.

Edgy MD wrote: It was kind of damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't with The Hall of Fame, who was in no hurry to induct either class of reliever before coming around on Sutter, inducting him in 2006 and Smith in 2007. One of my favorite "dumb sports radio host opinion" of all-time was Warner Wolf on his weekend morning show on ESPN Radio saying he'd want a Joba Chamberlain to make his debut in the majors to be a starter right away. Reasoning was that at that point NO relievers in the Hall, including future HOFers like Mariano Rivera, were pure relievers. Yes. The point was that it was "harder to make the Hall of Fame if you aren't a starter right away." And no, I'd imagine Wolf did not have a staffer sort through the stats of every HOF pitcher to make sure they started their MLB debut. But the point is that a year later the opinion was made moot after Sutter, who never started a game, was finally elected!

Edgy MD wrote: His third act was was with the Braves, falling off in his efficiency from year to year but still pitching a whole bunch of innings. He joins Braves staffmates Rick Camp and Rick Mahler in going to the hereafter too soon. His Braves contract is a frequent example to combat #ItsBobbyBonillaDayLOLMets enthusiasts with. I believe, oddly enough, this past year was the final year of that back loaded contract.

=batmagadanleadoff post_id=111255 time=1665765626 user_id=68] I only think of Sutter as a Cub. Odd because Sutter was still producing elite all star seasons for the Cards and was their ace reliever on the '82 WS championship team. But this notion of Sutter as only a Cub is so powerfully ingrained in me that I sometimes have to remind myself that he even played for the Cards.

Since his retirement he always was a fixture at Cardinal legacy events at Busch. Eventually getting inshrined in their team HOF, and his #42 was retired a second time (following the MLB mandate in 1997) in his honor after he was inducted into Cooperstown. But I don't think I've seen or heard anything of him being back at Wrigley for any sort of Cub history celebrations. I wonder if there was a rift between him and the organization, that won't be mended now. But it did seem odd that he never seemed to be at Wrigley

Granted after last weekend I would not be filled with as much Kahnfidence as I'd hope to have in an NLCS matchup, but are 163rd games a thing of the past, or only if the loser goes home (ie if the Phillies and Brewers wound up flat footed tonight)? I have no idea what your parenthetical i.e. or "loser goes home" means, but there are no more regular season 163rd games. Every regular season tie with playoff consequences is now broken by pre determined mathematical formulas. Under last season's rules, had the Phillies and Brewers finished with the same record, the loser would not have gone into the postseason. In the case of the Mets and Braves, the loser would still have entered the postseason as the top seeded Wild Card team.

Granted they have to cram three games into three days, and two across the country flights in a situation like the Mets vs Padres would be no bueno, but it is a little interesting that the lower seed has no home games.

The #LOLMets BLEW the Traid Deadline!!!!

Edgy MD wrote: Sometimes you come up short at a position, or a season, not because you compromised, but because your investment or investments didn't pan out. And while you wanted to pivot to alternatives, you were unable to find candidates that struck you as wiser alternatives. Or you retain faith in your original investment to turn around, but it doesn't. Sometimes, despite all the resources in the world, given a finite number of roster spots, you make the wrong decisions. Or you make the right ones and they fall victim to entirely unpredictable circumstances. Or in the Mets' case, you pivot just as your original investment is ready to turn around. Maybe they should have ridden Smith and Davis out. I dunno. You can be rich (even be the richest) and be wrong — wrong for the right reasons and wrong for the wrong ones. it's far more nuanced than a guy being crazy rich and therefore failure is unacceptable. Astros owner Jim Crane is one of the handful of least wealthy MLB owners, but he got some of the most DH production this season. Hopefully, the successes will carry things forward and the non-successes will keep at it and find a way to contribute anyhow. Deadline dealing strikes me as a tougher crapshoot than most. Even people blessed with great wealth and great ability have to stay humble, for humility will certainly be visited up on them. If we've learned nothing else from reading Beowulf, surely we've learned this. Shouldn't this be in a different thread? Eh, he was defending his position not to be all salivating and trollish when it comes to the potential of Aaron Judge changing his New York City based employment this off-season. OE: Ah, I see now where this probably should have been on the trade deadline thread. -

Elton John is in on it, too. https://twitter.com/jomboymedia/status/1576959738935267329 A friend of mine who lived in Atlanta pointed out Elton's apartment building with great pride in the late 1990s. A former tour partner of his, Billy Joel, will be in the ATL a few days after the apparent date for Game 7 of the 2023 World Series. Granted it's in the current home of the Atlanta Falcons. And granted his days of being a Big Shot are long behind him, but I'd love for him to be taking a dump and a piss on the grounds at Truist Park!

Benjamin Grimm wrote: Mets all time Top Twenty leaders in postseason play. This lists combines all levels of postseason: Wild Card, NLDS, NLCS, and World Series. When the Mets are about to begin a new postseason series, I'll post the leaders for whatever Series is about to begin. Needless to say, the leaderboards for the Wild Card series is pretty thin at the moment. If the Mets can fend off the Braves, we won't have to see that pathetic list. And if they don't, at least they'll have a chance to make that list somewhat less pathetic. Or if both the Mets and Braves start faltering a lot and the Cardinals finish the season on a pretty close to historic run -

First time I'm seeing it. My guess it's blowback against fans that who are anticipating the inevitable disaster that is around the corner, as opposed to soaking in the moment. Pretty much, “don't worry that the lead is a game this late in the season, just enjoy the fact that you root for a 90+ win (now 95) first place team that will be in the postseason.” With no mention of a “for now” caveat, or the issues that could make the postseason run a short one. -

I want to say Matt Kemp, but he didn't play in the 2006 NLDS. Not even sure if he was even eligible as I'm looking at a list of 23 performers and 5 guys who were on a roster page, but not sure who was on there just because that was the most recent info the Mets or MLB had to print for the copies in 2006.
