Was with the Nats, waived, claimed off waivers by the Phils on July 5, waived again without so much as a minor league appearance for Reading, claimed by the Mets on July 10, making him property of three NL East teams in less than a week. More fortuitously, he was falling upwards in the standings. Precipitously. Or maybe the opposite of precipitously. I'm not sure if precipitously works both ways. He labored nobly for a few weeks for Fman in Syracuse, and got the old 27th-man callup for a doubleheader. As noted, his only appearance was pitching the ninth inning of a win. If you're going to throw only one inning, you might as well get a handshake from the catcher afterwards. In some cases, that's better than sex. And that one appearance was enough to lower his 2022 ERA from 10.38 to 8.44!
  4. Funny, I was just reading Catfish Hunter's autobiography last night (I plan to hunt some catfish later this week is why) and I came across a passage where he described former Yankee pitcher Ken Clay (Sam's pappy*) as "Great slider, great arm, bad brains. He wouldn't listen to anybody." *Actually, upon checking, not. But "Hunter" is one of Sam Clay's middle names, it turns out. Sorry but once I saw you reply, my first thought was that Clay is the type of ex-Met whom your surprise over Brian Ostrosser knowledge around these parts would be warranted!

  10. Is there a Mets loving big shot thread anymore? Here ya go: http://phpbb3.leaptoad.com/mets/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=31078&p=113746&hilit=Met+lovin%E2%80%99#p113746http://phpbb3.leaptoad.com/mets/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=31078&p=113746&hilit=Met+lovin'#p113746 Considering George's issues (I'm not sullying the name of President Matthew Santos), I'd wager that was just bandwagoning to curry favor with a bloated GOP “outsider that acts like an insider.”
  11. Right now he's just under 70% according to the BBWAA HOF Ballot tracker https://onedrive.live.com/view.aspx?resid=F2E5D8FC5199DFAF!47464&ithint=file%2Cxlsx&authkey=!AOiVOHV1SzKLAR0https://onedrive.live.com/view.aspx?resid=F2E5D8FC5199DFAF!47464&ithint=file%2cxlsx&authkey=!AOiVOHV1SzKLAR0 BTW, Sid apparently forgot that for most of his Met career they had OTD ceremonies and games at Shea!

A Boy Named Seo wrote: If I had the need and means to buy a full-page ad in a New York paper to deliver a personal message, I think the Post would be pretty low on my list, for at least two reasons. And being a famous dude, I'd probably reach more people by just posting it on my own social media to begin with. Maybe this should be a poll, but if you had a important personal message to deliver to the masses of NY, how would you do it? deGrom doesn't have any presence on the major social media platforms though. The statement itself reads so Jeets-esque cliched that you'd think it was written by Crash Davis.

  15. Benjamin Grimm wrote: True. As evidenced by the Phillies lasting longer this year than the Dodgers, Mets, and Braves. More importantly though is this fun fact 12 franchises have made 5 or more postseason appearance streaks. 14 1991-2005 Braves, 1 World Championship 5 years into the streak 13 1995-2007 MFYs, 4 World Championships, all within the first 6 years 10 2013- Dodgers, 8 years in and it took a pandemic shortened season to win their lone title 6 2017- MFYs, no titles 6 2017- Astros, 2 titles that sandwich the 6 seasons 5 1949-1953 MFYs 5 and fucking 0 5 1960-1964 MFYs 2 championships, both on the early side of that streak 5 1971-1975 Athletics, Three-peat in the middle 5 1995-1999 Guardians 0 titles as the franchise still waits for their first since 1948 5 2007-2011…SHOULD HAVE BEEN US, but only one title in the 2nd season of the run 5 2011-2015 Cardinals Title that first year, then just one NL pennant to show 5 2018- Braves, so far just the 2021 title to show for half a decade in the postseason. Certainly plenty of league pennants and LCS appearances in each run, but even more so now just getting into the postseason is no guarantee of a championship parade at the end.

  18. I so hope the years and numbers are in response to Jon Heyman “jumping the gun” on a deal with the Giants earlier in the day. Like Norman Osborn in his son's head (Spider-Man II), the ghost of George demanding a wrecked budget for the next decade from his son!
  19. https://twitter.com/anthonydicomo/status/1599804181896101889 Wonder if the Mets will re-organize their Hall to make Keith and Ronnie multiple time honorees.
  20. =Marshmallowmilkshake post_id=114087 time=1670349427 user_id=119] I read that Diaz was named to the First Team, All-MLB team, and Lindor and Scherzer were named to the Second-Team, All-MLB team. I'm all in for giving Mets recognition. But I don't think I've ever heard of this before.
  21. Benitez in 2001, and Franco in 1990 are the only other Meryl winners.
  22. Diaz won the Mariano Rivera AL version back in 2018. Adding the old Rolaids Award and the short time concurrent DHL awards, Diaz is the 22nd multiple time winner, and the sixth to do it in both leagues. The others; Rollie Fingers Padres 1977-1978, 1980 and Brewers 1981 Craig Kimbrel Braves 2012-2014 and Red Sox 2017 Lee Smith Cardinals 1991, 1992 and Orioles 1994 Jose Valverde Diamondbacks 2007 and Tigers 2011 Randy Myers Reds 1993 and Orioles 1997

Edgy MD wrote: It's funny how these lamentations suggest most of us have such a card of varying degrees of effectiveness, but Muffy gets no play in this thread, despite (1) leaving under the designation of He's a Met. He just is. (as Lunchie put it at the time), and (2) turning into a no-doubt All Star and MVP candidate for a few years after initially leaving. Lamentations are stronger for the guy who left and declined than for the guy who left and improved. I'm not sure what that means, except perhaps that I Don't Care cards are powerful talismans that require further study. Not to sound like I'm a member of QAnon, but a part of me thinks that stuff like Gary being on the negative side on Murphy's abilities, and especially him being interviewed following Billy Bean's clubhouse discussion that spring was part of a concerted effort to grease the skids, and make his impending departure less of a kick in the groin than others have been.
  24. Edgy MD wrote: No, sexy peeps are everywhere in the digital verse. The best spouses help flesh out the great arc of the Mets story. Hey, that reminds me of something I should add to another thread. Yeah but there is a difference between those who aren't a wannabe Kardashian, and those whom seemingly attract the sleaziness of both mainstream and fringe media outlets due to their narcissistic need for attention on the same level as their professional athlete hubby. Personally I don't care as long as she, or he when that ever happens, doesn't distract from the player's job. But I can see how the "I want to be as famous for being a glorified accessory" types can wear out those whom pay attention to those whom stay in the private sector and/or have professional accomplishments that equals, or is greater than their partner's.
