IIRC, I read during his last years that he and his fans were afraid that if he didn't finish his career at .300, some voters wouldn't vote him to the Hall of Fame. The .300 career average was a magic number for entry back then. And players who didn't have it were looked down upon by some of the old time members and writers. Later Mick even said that it was still a thorn in his craw in his autobiography that came out in the late 1980s.

Later Oddly I have a feeling trying to get them all in a group is why it took Berra a few years, until many writers realized how dumb that idea would be, and Ford an extra year though I can see him legitimately being held over as a “not First Ballot material” if the debates were anything like today.

In anticipating the finale of ANLT's It Happens In Threes Series, here is the 2013 Mets! https://www.tcdb.com/List.cfm/lid/10334/New-York-Mets-2013?C=0https://www.tcdb.com/List.cfm/lid/10334/New-York-Mets-2013?C=0 Hey Greg, make this an annual thing would ya! Gives me a chance to complete some of my virtual collections on that site Though, a few of the 4s don't exactly deserve any kind of “Fab” related superlatives…I'm glaring right at you 1994…baseball wise anyway, hockey and hoops for me was glorious, save for what happened in the last Knick game, that summer

Seems odd to celebrate the shitty records with the same enthusiasm as if a more positive one was no longer in danger of being equaled or toppled. It happened. You don't want it to happen. But having happened, I prefer we find the most possible meaning in it. It IS the defining part of the franchise's origin story. It STILL WOULD BE considered one of the historically worst seasons in MLB history, even if both the number of loses and winning percentage were topped more than a dozen times.

Half, because there's another interloper in there, somewhere. Well, 26 RBIs leading a league is truly an interloper's wistful thinking…especially 87 off of the team leader's 113
  9. Thinking about the “HAR-VEY'S-BET-TER” chant towards Nats fans. Now both will be eligible for the same year HOF ballot. But I suppose Strasburg with his WS hardware will have enough to garner a few more “what could have been sympathy” votes among the electorate.
  10. FWIW, when Segna took to his socials to field options for his Met number, he said #48 was off the table. I'd imagine it was taken by fans at the time to be Segna being aware and/or being appreciative of deGrom's legacy with the franchise/MLB more than anything. But, it hasn't been issued yet this season 🤔 Certainly a sign that #48 probably is in line for a retirement ceremony down the road.
  11. That Kolb Mets card is from TCMA's 1978 set -- "The 1960s", consisting mostly, I think, of fringy or part-time players. The set design is about as plain as could be -- just a player photo inside of a plain rectangular frame -- no graphics or front text. It's sequel set released in 1981 contains the only card, on TCDB anyway, of a unique phantom major leaguer https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/9103/cid/499635/1981-TCMA-The-1960%27s-II-399-Chet-Trailhttps://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/9103/cid/499635/1981-TCMA-The-1960's-II-399-Chet-Trail Chet Trail, from 1903 through the 2005 postseason, the only member of a postseason roster, 1964 Yankees, that did not appear in a game that season. I think it's been done three times since 2006.
  12. Edgy MD wrote: It depends on what you think the spirit of the trade deadline rule is, I think. If the spirit of the rule is that a team shouldn't suddenly be transformed in the final weeks of the season into an entity that they had not been all year, and represent themselves in the playoffs suddenly enriched by some new ringers, then this wouldn't violate that spirit, as it's merely returning to a team players who had been with them most of the season — players who have established themselves as part of the team's identity. If the spirit of the rule is that opponents who have traded well and prospered should capitalize on the failed trades of opponents who haven't traded well and/or haven't prospered, along with the capitalizing on the faithlessness of the teams who divested and found themselves underequipped when their team suddenly re-eters the race, then my proposal is an offense to that spirit. I know a few months is different than a few weeks, but you can use the old waiver/postseason roster deadline of August 31st for examples. I mean I've talked about it in the Verlander trade thread that some loon host on WEEI in Boston thought it would be possible that the soon to be free agent David Cone could wind up as the PTBNL that would join Jeff Kent going from Toronto to the Mets! But lets say Edwin Diaz was still on the Mariners for the last few years, had the same type of performances, but decided to sign with the Mets during the offseason. WBC injury still happens! Mets collapse though doesn't, so Robertson, Cahna, Escobar, JV and Max are still on the club. Wouldn't Diaz willing himself to be on the roster, and at least "co-closing" with Robertson before September 1st be akin to this as well? Ditto various months-long stints on a DL, or IL these days. I mean that often was a crutch GMs would use when defending lack of non-Proven Crap acquisitions around the deadline "Getting X back will be like a trade, only we aren't losing anyone." Also, define "back into a race." As a good run against similar or worse competition while the leaders of either WC or division stumble a little could give some false hope, that you can't guarantee the returning players would be able to keep the ball rolling with once the team starts playing teams with better records.

  17. Edgy MD wrote: We were robbed of Seaver's 200th win in a Mets uniform. We missed his 250th and his 300th. These were sacred milestones to Mets fans that were somehow achieved for someone else's cause. We got to see Verlander's 250th win and it was like "I guess that's cool, because it beats losing, but whatev ... oh, you traded him?" Part of that is just being old, but a big part is the knowledge that these guys were always just passing through. If Pete Alonso were to go, it wouldn't "rip my heart out," because I'm already a crotchedy old fuck whose heart is made of crumpled, rusted scrap metal, but I recognize how it would do painful things to a ten-year-old heart that trading Justin Verlander could never do. I said earlier that using Verlander's 2017 trade to the Astros from the Tigers was a much better comp to 1977 Seaver in terms of how the two fanbases felt. And the Tigers didn't even get a Flynn, Zachary or Henderson type out of their haul, never mind they still haven't finished over .500 since the previous season. Verlander was clearly a rental deal as the team was going through a downturn that they haven't climbed out of, though he did sign with the Astros in the offseason. So that was clearly a more similar deal and probably was up there in terms of soul crushing for fans of the Tigers. Don't even know where that OP was coming from even saying that going from the Mets back to the Astros was even slightly similar. But I think it's more that it's not even remotely comparable more so than it's a case of “seen this happen to my team/favorite players dozens of times now in my decades of rooting for them/I've been made well aware now about how the sausages are made for decades now!”

  19. Lefty Specialist wrote: Ooh, that Elizabeth Warren one was cold. The Mets traded for 4 shortstops, but at a young age the best players are shortstops. Hell, Jacob deGrom was a shortstop. Eventually they grow into their bodies and become third basemen or second basemen or outfielders. Not really too concerned about a 17-or 18-year-old's position; I'm concerned whether they can hit and are reasonably athletic. This is NOTHING like 1977. The Seaver trade ripped my heart out. The Scherzer trade was, "Wow, cool, we got Ronald Acuna's little brother". The TwiX twat was talking about the Verlander deal. But yeah, 16 games out of a legendary pitcher and a course correcting deal compared to The Franchise and an incompetent mess of a FO and ownership group isn't even comparing round fruit to each other!
  20. Wow, it's not close enough to consider changing the name of The Warren Spahn Curse, but this is interesting since I've joked about the Mets' luck with bringing in former Cy Young Award winners, especially considering the end of their Met tenures (it even fits bringing Tom Seaver back into the fold with leaving him unprotected heading into 1984) going all the way back to bringing 1957 winner, and arguably one of the greatest to ever toe a MLB rubber, 44-year old Warren Spahn as a player/coach before the 1965 season. Only Spahn was pretty washed and was released on July 17th. Ended up signing with the Giants a few days later and while lasting through the end of the year, to “slightly” better results, it was his final 16 appearances in MLB (for some reason Spahn played in the Mexican leagues and the PCL the next two years respectively). In the end though, Spahn pitched in 20 games and an even 126 innings in a Met uniform. Granted Verlander, at 40-years old, missed a month, and he was traded more out of correcting the course of the season and organization, but his Met career ends with 16 games and 94 and a third innings pitched.
  21. https://twitter.com/RealMetsFanClub/status/1686470779037417474 Yeah ok LOL! I think you mean what Tiger fans felt back on August 31st of 2017 was akin to the Mets on 6/15/1977 Traded by the Detroit Tigers with a player to be named later and cash to the Houston Astros for Franklin Pérez (minors), Daz Cameron and Jake Rogers. The Detroit Tigers sent Juan Ramirez (minors) (October 13, 2017) to the Houston Astros to complete the trade. But sure, trade a guy who pitched for three months to the guy literally named The Franchise. And compare a course correction to a mess brought on by an insane ownership situation and baseball incompetence.
  22. Welp, no watching thread in 2023, but a Wifey that was worth Watching is heading back to Houston!

  24. All this talk is reminding me of being in Boston the day David Cone was traded to Toronto for Jeff Kent and a PTBNL. Ryan Thompson wasn't selected until after the rosters expanded on September first, so the host on WEEI was speculating as who the Jays were sending the Mets way. One suggestion, by the host himself not a caller, was that Cone could be sent back to New York after the Blue Jays finished their season! Never mind the Jays wound up being World Champions that October, so talk about playing a long game to complete a transaction! But that was ignorantly not realizing Cone was a free agent to be heading into the 1993 season! Hence why the Mets moved him to a contender in a quintessential rental deal! The Mets were clearly not going to be in the Cone sweepstakes that offseason, so better get some MLB ready talent for him, but the point was more that even if the rules allowed for it, or a loophole was big enough to do it. There really wasn't any point to make Cone the PTBNL if he was going to hit the free agent market anyway.
