  1. Cliff Floyd, I think. Perhaps twice. During his time with the Mets he lost a sister and, I think, a grandmother.
  2. There's no such thing as fate. The Mets magic number is 69.
  3. You don't have to be a Mets fan to like the number 69.
  4. I think he's checking her out.
  5. The closest match on my online list is Blue Latitudes by Tony Horwitz. I read it in April of 2003. There's also The Blue Messiah by James D. Horan. I barely remember it (I read it in 1993) but I recall it was some kind of a cop novel. I think it was a hand-me-down from my grandmother. As for Doug's sister, it sounds almost certain that it was foul play. I guess there's a very very slim chance that her history of amnesia could account for her being alive for the last 30 years without contacting her family.
  6. I think it's somewhat telling that when Gotay plays he bats second, but when Valentin got the start last night he batted eighth.
  7. Not me. But I did hear from "Letitiab Danielr." He wants to sell me some Viagra.
  8. I don't know whether or not you'd call Mike Celizic "fairly reputable." I've never heard of him before. But I did spot this paragraph in an article on MSNBC.com about how we should expect a dull trading deadline this year: ="Mike Celizic"]The Mets are said to be doing everything they can to pry Roy Oswalt from the Astros, but while Houston may know it has no chance this year, it still doesnt want to ship one of the premier starters in the game out of town. Mike Celizic is a frequent contributor to MSNBC.com and a free-lance writer based in New York. While getting Roy Oswalt would certainly be nice (especially given the ages of Glavine, Hernandez, and Pedro) I think their more immediate need is a bat and not an arm.
  9. Johnny Dickshot wrote: Don't get me wrong here -- we're better with him than without him -- but Chavez was hardly part of the solution before getting injured this year. Well... In the last five games he played, (all in June) Endy was only 2 for 17 but in 26 games in May he hit .312, slugged .416, and his OBP was .365. (3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 homer, 7 walks, 10 runs, 2 steals.) I'd call that a positive contribution.
  10. Well, I just looked at my 1979 Mets baseball cards and yes, that color is accurate. Bruce Boisclair, Ed Kranepool, Doug Flynn, and many others all had that very red shade of orange on their uniforms. It's kind of a "blood orange." Good eye, CF.
  11. You're referring to Boisclair's sleeve, I assume? It looks pretty red to me, too. I have a copy of that card; I'll have to dig it out and see if mine is as red as that one is. Edgy, I can't see your Danny Boitano image. If you used IMG tags, I think you need to make sure the URL is in quotes.
  12. I don't remember anything about it. But of course, it was 30 years ago.
  13. What a sad story. And that May 8 post from "monkalup" is a bit out of context. A family lost their daughter and he's posting baseball stats from some lame web site.
  14. Not if they make him a gelding he's not.
  15. I've been wondering about Ambres and, if I recall correctly, suggested promoting him instead of Ledee when Endy went down. What's the deal on Chip? Is he considered a prospect or a AAA (or AAAA?) player?
  16. Okay, that game's closed now. Three more remain of the series against the Reds at Shea. The three weekend games will close on Wednesday: Friday, Reds 8, Mets 4: http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6852 Saturday, Mets 2, Reds 1: http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6857 Sunday, Mets 5, Reds 2: http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6861

  19. I think we're saying if Milledge plays well the rest of the way...
  20. We only use Irish idioms around here.
  21. That's American for "taking the piss."
  22. My guess is that Jacob K. is ten years old and wasn't intending to take anybody's urine.
  23. Which comedies would you add? Looking through the list quickly, I spotted 12 comedies: 22. "Some Like It Hot" (1959) 26. "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939) 35. "Annie Hall" (1977) 46. "It Happened One Night" (1934) 54. "MASH" (1970) 60. "Duck Soup" (1933) 69. "Tootsie" (1982) 78. "Modern Times" (1936) 80. "The Apartment" (1960) 85. "A Night at the Opera" (1935) 88. "Bringing Up Baby" (1938) 99. "Toy Story" (1995) If I were to add some comedies to the list I might include Young Frankenstein and The Out-of-Towners (the original one with Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis). I'm also partial to Woody Allen's Take the Money and Run.
  24. I was going to comment with my choice for which was the dumbest question, but there are too many to choose from. I have it narrowed down to Jon H.'s question about Rickey Henderson, Jordan R.'s question about Duaner Sanchez, Alex X. on Fernando Martinez, Marty C. on Mike Piazza, and Jacob K. on Endy Chavez. That's five out of eight still remaining in the competition for dumbest question. Obviously I didn't narrow it down a whole lot.
  25. The Padres are one of three long-time Mets opponents against whom the Mets have a .500 record or better. The other two are the Cubs (332 and 332; the Mets just reached .500 this year) and the Expos (299 and 298; the last game the two teams played was the rubber game of a 597-game series.) The Mets are 205 and 205 against San Diego since 1969. Over the last two years the Mets are 9-4 against the Padres, so until last year they had had a losing record. You'd think that the Mets would have a better all-time record against the Padres than they do, but they don't. Winning the series that starts tonight will allow the Mets to keep "bragging rights" at least until San Diego's next visit to Shea and, more importantly, can put the Mets in a better position to win the Wild Card if they fail to hold the division lead. San Diego is the current Wild Card leader, and their record (50-40) is only a half game less than that of the Mets. (51-40)
