  1. I hated those cutaways to Bonds in Milwaukee during Saturday's game. Bonds is at 753 home runs. I don't see why we need live coverage of his 754th home run. Big deal! It won't tie or break the record. I'm almost as fatigued of Barry Bonds as I am of President Bush. (And that's saying a LOT.) Enough already. At one point I was enduring a 12-pitch at bat by Barry and wishing I was watching on TiVo-delay so I could fast-forward.
  2. Nobody ever said that he was the Holy of Holies. (Whatever that means.) We just don't agree with you that he's the Fount of all Evil. Your inability to see shades of grey in this matter reminds me of that guy who sees Willie Randolph as sinister and brain damaged.
  3. Even more surprising is that Brian Daubach has won three times and Carlos Delgado hasn't even won once.
  4. Well said. Casey's contribution certainly can't be judged by his wins and losses as a manager. But, as much as anybody, he helped the franchise establish itself. None of the other founders wore a uniform number, so Casey's 37 in a way stands for all of them. I can see how he can be seen as less deserving than Hodges or Seaver, but I don't think they erred in retiring Casey Stengel's number.
  5. ="Elster88"]And other cool stuff like who has the most daily wins. Okay, since you asked. Keep in mind that daily totals have only been tracked since April 2003. If I had been tracking them since the UMDB's inception in early 1999, Mike Piazza would probably have a much higher total. So, to a lesser degree, would Tommie Agee and John Milner. (They would have received the "death benefit" that Donn Clendenon, Tug McGraw, Rod Kanehl and maybe a few others did.) 6. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I think of sleepaway camp as fertile ground for child molesters.
  7. Schaefer participation continues to plummet. Only six votes ((G-Fafif, metirish, Frayed Knot, Yancy Street Gang, Gwreck, Rockin' Doc) so far for Thursday's 13-9 win in Los Angeles. Nevertheless, voting will close on Tuesday. If you haven't voted yet, please do so: http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6910 The remaining three games against the Dodgers will close on Wednesday.

  10. Retired numbers is one of the few things the Mets have done right. I have no problem with 37, 14, or 41. (Although 37 may have been unnecessary.) I would absolutely NOT retire 24, 36, 17, 8, or 1. And if 31 was up to me, I'd lean towards no. Piazza had no World Championships, no MVP's, and was in decline for more than half of his Mets career. Let's watch and see if Wright and Reyes can have the kind of career that calls for retiring their numbers. (I'd say 10 to 15 years as a Met and a trip to Cooperstown.) In other words, many years should pass before the Mets retire another number.

  12. The number you're looking for is 54, not 60.

  15. Omar in the booth at Dodger Stadium with Gary and Ron during Friday night's game. Says anything the Mets get from Pedro this year is a bonus, and they're mainly focused on 2008. Huh? NOT what I was expecting to hear.
  16. Art Howe was the manager when the Mets traded Wigginton.
  17. Perez 4.5 Feliciano 1 Wagner 0.5 Beltran 2 Wright 1 Reyes 1
  18. Did the San Diego guys also strike you as being particularly bad? Badder than most?
  19. Despite the mistakes pointed out in this thread, it was very pleasant to listen to. It brought back memories for me of the Saturday Game of the Week that used to be on NBC, plus, of course, the 1986 World Series. And it's a kick to listen to the guy who's been doing Dodgers games continuously since they played in Brooklyn. I'd listen to him talk about Jose Reyes and David Wright and think that he also talked about Pee Wee Reese and Duke Snider. There's a certain charm in hearing Vin Scully talk about the home towns of the various umpires. And every once in a while he'll say something odd, like "It's funny how some people named James are Jimmy or Jim, but some of them are James." With no one else in the booth with him, the comment just sits there and seems all the more odd because of that.
  20. I was pleasantly surprised by the Cincinnati broadcast team last weekend. I usually only half listen to announcers, and this time was no exception. But I heard them make some interesting points and I didn't find myself annoyed or exasperated at all. Now the San Diego team on the other hand was comprised of two idiots. I didn't catch either of their names, but they were about as bad as it gets. (Disclaimer: I still haven't heard a YES broadcast of a Yankees game.)
  21. Small item in the Daily News today says that according to Omar, Pedro will throw a simulated game when he returns to the US from the DR and then he'll pitch in a minor league game. Nothing about a timetable, however.
