  2. The Schaefer Mets Player of the Month for June 2007 is JOHN MAINE. Maine won 3 games and lost 2 in June, and posted an ERA of 2.66 in 40.2 innings. This is the first Player of the Month win for Maine. This is the third time that he's been the Pitcher of the Month. He won the Pitcher of the Month award previously in July 2006 and April 2007. http://leaptoad.com/mets/jpeg/1977JohnMaine.jpg Month-to-date totals for June 2007 Through game of June 30, 2007 RankNamePoints1John Maine19.142David Wright18.763Jos Reyes16.584Carlos Beltran14.285Tom Glavine12.366Jorge Sosa12.247Paul Lo Duca12.068Orlando Hernandez11.709Carlos Gomez11.4410Carlos Delgado11.2811Oliver Perez9.3212Shawn Green7.7213Billy Wagner7.2014Ruben Gotay6.3315Pedro Feliciano5.6716Aaron Heilman4.9817Damion Easley4.9318Ramon Castro4.4919Guillermo Mota3.8820Ricky Ledee3.7121Scott Schoeneweis3.2922Jos Valentin2.7623Joe Smith2.2624David Newhan1.5025Julio Franco1.2326Endy Chavez0.7127Aaron Sele0.5228Ben Johnson0.28

  7. Yes, that's right! I was taking the piss!
  8. Who's the idiot who predicted that Vargas would throw a two-hit shutout tonight?
  9. What? Is three inches bad? I... Oops! Never mind!
  10. That would be nice. I have to say, I liked the 2006 team more than I do this one. I guess if the 2007 team manages to win the World Series my preference might change. I hope to find out.
  11. I'm surprised to learn that he got as small as 3.75 inches.
  12. metirish wrote: Yancy are you basing that on his 11.57 ERA against the Rockies,2.1 innings pitched..not at Coors Field though,so there is hope. I'm basing it more on wishful thinking, which is always highly accurate. If I'm right, I'll look like a genius. If I'm wrong, everyone will assume I was just taking the piss, so I can't lose with this prediction.
  13. Jason Vargas is going to throw a two-hit shutout tonight. You heard it here first.
  14. What about Alou and Chavez? I think I'd give Wright a B or maybe a B+. He's done a nice job of putting that April behind him. I think I'd be more generous to Green, though I don't know if we're supposed to figure expectations into the grade. He and Wright have certainly contributed more than Gomez and Gotay. Looking at these grades, I have to conclude that the Mets are pretty lucky to be in first place. The post-season is anything but a sure thing.
  15. They've battled.
  16. Voting for all four games against the Phillies will close either on Wednesday or Thursday. Vote counts are shrinking, Schaefer apathy is growing. I'll announce the June Player and Pitcher of the month on Thursday, if I feel like it! 18. sharpie wrote: Well, you know, David Wright and John Maine and Paul Lo Duca and Tom Glavine played well against them. That could be! I was thinking that it was because the Mets may have refused to trade Lastings Milledge to Oakland. (And if they DID refuse, it could only be because the Mets don't want the Athletics to have too many black players.)
  19. ]my column on Monday, June 25, entitled "A's whitewashed by Beane, Mets," I wonder how the Mets are "whitewashing" the Oakland A's?
  20. From my seat in left field, when I saw Utley didn't field the ball cleanly, I had hopes of a safe call. Then the throw to first. Franco looked to be about two thirds of the way up the line when Howard caught the ball. I was surprised that Franco wasn't closer to the bag and thought that maybe he had stumbled or pulled a muscle or something. He wasn't where I expected him to be, but I can't say for sure that my expectations were reasonable.
  21. Yesterday was my second visit to Citizens Bank Park, and the first time I get there early enough to explore a bit before the game. I agree about Ashburn Alley. We got our lunch at Bull's BBQ. I got a tasty turkey sandwich, and my son got the ribs, which he devoured. (He was up at midnight last night puking up big chunks of pork, though. I hope the meat wasn't tainted.) All of the tables were full (some people were placing their food on the top of trash cans and using them as makeshift tables!) so we decided to take our lunches back to our seats, which were on the other side of the Alley. It was tough walking through the crowd while balancing a tray. The line for the crab fries was very long. I figured they were probably good but didn't want to stand on that line, especially while balancing a tray. It IS a nice park. It has the feel of a minor league park, and I mean that in a good way. Nice and open, and you're close to the action. Even though there's sometimes a roof over your head when you're moving through the concession areas, you never totally feel like you're "indoors." (Much different than the caverns of Shea Stadium.) As I've said before, my gripe about "the Bank" is its location, so far from Center City. But they did build a very nice stadium. I hope they do as nice a job with Citi Field.

  24. Marty Noble wrote: Mike Pelfrey, who had been scheduled to start on Friday, will make his return to the big leagues and take Perez's place in the final game of the four-game series against the Phillies. Perez said the club intends to examine him again on Sunday and determine whether he can pitch on Tuesday in Denver as tentatively scheduled. If he can't, the Mets will have to find a starter not in their rotation. Pelfrey, John Maine, Orlando Hernandez and Tom Glavine won't have sufficient rest, and Jorge Sosa, injured on Saturday, won't either, even if his hamstring injury isn't serious. So, if it's not Perez on Tuesday in Denver, then who? Humber? Vargas? Someone else?
