  1. Maine 5.5 Milledge 2 Lo Duca 1 Reyes 0.75 Gotay 0.75
  2. Euphemism or not, I don't think I'd be comfortable with him in my house.
  3. The only thing special about Barry's balls is that they're tiny and shriveled. Giving the money to charity is nice, but unfortunately the ball will belong to whatever thug in the stands is able to push everyone else out of the way.
  4. True. But I'd rather destroy the ball and be done with it.
  5. I heard that they started with Barry with number 750. I don't really know that his 754th home run ball would be that much more valuable than, say, his 733rd, but using specially marked baseballs actually ensures that it will be more valuable. I'm so sick of memorabilia. If I was the dictator of baseball, I'd put big screens up so that no fan could get the ball, and I'd have it retrieved by special agents who would immediately destroy the ball.
  6. I'm also kinda partial to this game, June 30, 1978. I even wrote an award-losing song about it!
  7. How could I forget John Smiley?
  8. Brad Clontz, wild pitch, October 3, 1999: http://leaptoad.com/mets/gamedetail.php?gameno=6065 Puts the Mets into a one-game playoff with Cincinnati for the NL Wild Card.
  9. Let us not forget Jim Leyland's Bonds/Bonilla/Van Slyke Pirates of the early 1990's. They never reached a World Series (although they came very close) but they were the class of the NL East for a few years. I remember they also had some pretty good starting pitching, but the only name that comes to mind right now is Doug Drabek. That team, so far, has been the last outstanding team that the Pirates have had. And they kept the Mets out of the playoffs in 1990. I also remember, I think in 1984, the Mets closed the season in Pittsburgh and it was speculated that that might be the final game the Pirates would play there. There had been a rumor that the Pirates might relocate to Washington DC over the offseason. I don't think that move ever came close to fruition, but it does show that the city's hold on the Pirates became rather tenuous for a while there.
  10. The Pirates were my first World Champion too, in 1971. It was hard not to like a team that had Stargell and Clemente. I'm trying to remember some of the 1971 Pirates baseball cards that I have. Rennie Stennett? Luke Walker. Nelson Briles. Richie Hebner. Bill Robinson?
  11. I don't think they'd replace Heilman, they'd join him.
  12. Johnny Dickshot wrote: I read somewhere the Mets have a thing for Ronny Paulino. Yeah, me too. I think it was in the Daily News. Something about how he's being considered to replace Lo Duca next year. What's really important about this series is that the Mets need to win, and win, and win. It's a chance to beat up on a losing team and in a close division race you have to win the games you're supposed to win. I'll reluctantly settle for two wins out of three, but anything less than three wins is a missed opportunity.
  13. Thank you to those who voted on the Thursday game and brought the total up to a respectable ten votes. Three more games will close tomorrow (Wednesday), which will wrap up the series in Los Angeles. Friday, Mets 4, Dodgers 1: http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6917 Saturday, Dodgers 8, Mets 6: http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6923 Sunday, Mets 5, Dodgers 4 (10): http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6929 Saturday's game is a little light, with only 7 votes, but that's fairly typical for a loss. Whatever happened to metsmarathon and m.e.t.b.o.t., by the way? Their absence is certainly contributing to the lower vote totals.

  15. I wish I was able to watch.
  16. Must have been 2005. In 1985 there was no such thing as "netbuzz." The Internet probably had about a dozen users.
  17. I was thinking it might be Hillary Swank, but, well... I don't want to say she looks awful, but I've seen her looking better. I guess that bottom picture is one of those unflattering pictures that can happen to anyone.
  18. In retrospect, one of the most surprising things about that movie is that there was never a sequel. My guess is that Spielberg resisted. I'm sure the studio would have loved to do an ET 2. I don't remember if there were ever even any rumors about another ET movie.
  19. Who is that?

  21. Belliard would be a great guy to get for the next few months. He's not the second baseman of the future that the Mets need (he's 35) but I suspect that Gotay isn't either. It's the time of the year, and the type of year, where you have to sacrifice some youth to try to solidify the run for the pennant. So Gotay for Belliard might be worthwhile. On the other hand, Gotay is 25, and I'd hate to trade Melvin Mora for Mike Bordick all over again. I have no idea whether or not Gotay is going to turn into anything like Melvin Mora. That's why I'm glad I don't have to make these kinds of decisions.

  23. I guess I was 19 when it came out, and I thought it was great. I watched it for the second time about 16 years later, when my son was a toddler. It didn't do much for me. I suppose my heartstrings don't get tugged the same way that they once did. I probably would have given it 4.5 stars then, maybe 2.5 now. I don't know if I should split the difference and vote 3.5, or go with my first (and dated) impression, or my current opinion. Such a difficult situation!
