  1. There are probably as many alligators in Germany as there are tigers in Detroit.
  2. Especially since he'll only cost the major-league minimum. Strange that the Blue Jays were so quick to give up on him. They must have really seen him as a bad apple.
  3. I think, if I lived in Germany, I'd be inclined to root for the NEUNKIRCHEN NIGHTMARES.
  4. The number "30" can't be significant on its own, independent of the unit of measure. Do we need 30 innings? 30 at bats? 30 pitches? 30 games? 30 years?
  5. Voting for Thursday night's 14-inning win over the Nationals at Shea will close on Tuesday morning. http://cranepoolforum.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=8734
  6. Smith 1 Sosa 1 Castillo 1 Church 1 Beltran 2 Wright 1 Reyes 1 Casanova 1
  7. Any word on where Gronauer will play? Brooklyn? Kingsport? Gulf Coast?
  8. Gwreck wrote: Philly is turning into a very nasty place to see a game. I've been getting that same vibe. Even though it's the most convenient place (for me) to see a Mets game, I'd rather make the trip to Shea. Next year, if Citi Tickets are too hard (or expensive) to come by, I'll try to satisfy my Mets jones by going to Washington.
  9. Valadius wrote: He deserves a memorial in Washington. All seven episodes are sitting unwatched on my TiVo, but I did read the book a few years ago. And I agree with Valadius' statement. They should put it right near Jefferson's. (I think there's plenty of room there, isn't there? I haven't been down that way in a long time.)
  10. AG/DC wrote: I'm sure Silva's broadcasts have a lot to offer all of us. He'd just generate more interest if he interacted instead of hitting and running, knowha'mean? That's pretty much my point. I don't suppose I expressed it very well.
  11. I know. I don't mind the promotional stuff, but it would be more acceptable if it was from someone who was part of the general conversation around here.
  12. Oh, I have no illusion that Howard won't snap out of it. But I'll enjoy this funk while it lasts. And I am surprised at how weak and clueless he looks.

  14. Batmag e-mails like that too.
  15. My prediction: Batmag will be at the Tom Seaver level by August.
  16. Well, it's too late for that, of course. His plaque already has an Expos cap.
  17. Whoever that was doing the play-by-play with Tim McCarver made the same mistake that Gary Cohen made a few days earlier; saying that Paul Lo Duca was traded with Lastings Milledge for Church and Schneider. Did it somehow get into the official press notes? Is this eventually going to gain a bit of truthiness? Also, how about that Ryan Howard? For the first time ever, I had absolutely no fear of him. I'm sure he'll snap out of it, but right now he's looking awfully washed up. He's what we fear Delgado will be. He's where Mo Vaughn was headed in 2003. He's a big dead space in the middle of the Phillies lineup. The only guys who made me worry at all during yesterday's game were Utley and Burrell. Once the Mets would get past Burrell, there is a weak underbelly in the Phillies lineup. (Although Bruntlett did have that very pesky at bat.) And one more thing... I wasn't aware that Jason Werth was Dick Schofield Sr.'s grandson. I guess that makes him the nephew of our Dick Schofield, huh?
  18. Some bad bullpen management by Willie in this game. Burning through all those pitchers in the 8th left him with a bullpen that had only Wagner and Sosa. If the Phillies had tied the game in the ninth against Wagner, it would have had to have been Sosa for the rest of the way in extras. (And if Sosa faltered, then who? Figueroa, I guess.) Here are the two moves I wanted Willie to make, but he didn't: When Sanchez came in, I would have double-switched. Put Endy in left field and pull Pagan. And I would have let Joe Smith pitch to the lefty Dobbs. Of course, the Mets ended up winning, and if they had done it my way, they may not have. But I do think Willie left himself awfully (and unnecessarily) vulnerable with his pitching moves, but fortunately, it worked out.
  19. Box score Wagner 1 Heilman 1.25 Sanchez 0.5 Reyes 3 Wright 1 Perez 3.25

  21. Really? I hadn't heard that. I think I would have preferred the Thing as a CGI. I was surprised when they went with a costume.
  22. Box score Santana 3.5 Wagner 1 Wright 2.5 Schneider 1 Pagan 1 Delgado 1
  23. I wasn't too thrilled with that either. It had me wondering if Willie realized that the Mets were playing an extra-innings game.
  24. Wow! Who knew that Pete Rose could sing? Has he been banned yet from American Idol? He should give it a shot!
  25. And I do think he has reason to fear being replaced, but Manny Acta is currently employed. If Willie doesn't make it through the 2008 season, it won't be Manny Acta who replaces him. (He should perhaps be more worried about Jerry Manuel.)
