  1. I remember when I was a regular at Shea back in the 1980's, I'd see players fraternizing all the time. Keith Hernandez would schmooze with his former Cardinal teammates, Darryl Strawberry would chat with Eric Davis... The rule's been on the books forever, but it's been ignored for decades, at least. Even if Willie Randolph never did it (and I'm skeptical) many of his teammates during his playing days did. And maybe I'm wrong, but despite what David Wright is saying, I think I just the other day saw a photo of him with his arm around Ryan Zimmerman, both of them in uniform.
  2. She's cuter than he is. He married up.
  3. And also, to think that had a few things broken differently, Zito and/or Oswalt would be Mets right now.
  4. Hamels told the Philadelphia Inquirer that he's not going to be focused on Santana; he has to concentrate on the Mets hitters. As for Santana, "I don't care," Hamels said. "He could be a weird-looking person that had eight arms, and that's not going to bother me." The Mets should send Santana to the mound in this costume and see if they can't freak Hamels out: http://www.entertainmentstore.com.au/media/client/HenryMed.jpg
  5. It seems that marathon games often end on misplays. (I remember an 18-inning game I attended at Shea in 1985 against the Pirates. That was the famous "Rusty in the outfield" game. It ended with, I think, Clint Hurdle hitting a ball between an infielder's legs.)
  6. It looks like Steve Trachsel will end up being the winningest Mets pitcher of the decade: http://leaptoad.com/mets/decades.php?ThisDecade=2000 And Tom Glavine will be the inningest. Piazza still leads the decade in a few categories, but by the end of next season, he may not lead in any.
  7. Voting for the long-awaited Chico and the Maine matchup will close over the weekend. This was Wednesday night's 5-2 victory over the Nationals. Only 12 votes so far, which is a little light for a Mets win. If you still intend to vote, please do so today. Voting may close as early as Saturday morning.
  8. Also, did anyone catch Gary Cohen's indirect plug of Mets By the Numbers at the beginning of last night's game? They showed a couple of kids with Mets uniform numbers painted on their cheeks. (5 7 15 57, or something like that) and Gary said, simply, "Mets by the numbers." And that was that.

  10. Triple Dee wrote: Teixeira, otoh, will probably not re-sign with the Braves, but let's be honest, the Botox and MFY will throw crazy money at him. I wouldn't rule out Tex becoming a Met just because of the Sox and the Yankees. Remember, the conventional wisdom was that those same two teams were going to prevent Santana from becoming a Met. And there was no way that the Mets were going to get Beltran; he was also destined to be a Yankee. If the Mets decide to go after Teixeira, they'll have a chance to get him.
  11. Adrian Garrett isn't as obscure as you seem to think. I remember hearing about him all the time when Wayne was a Met. (I guess he's obscure to all but those of us who have reached a "certain age.")
  12. I just watched the 14th inning on TiVo delay. (I went to bed last night after the 13th.) I was awfully surprised that David Wright saw three pitches before they decided to intentionally walk him. Seemed like an obvious move to me.

  14. His name can be mentioned.
  15. He said he has to struggle to remember to use American spellings. I thought he was American until he posted the 11/4 OOTS thread.
  16. I'm becoming intrigued by 3D. Lives in Australia yet knows about Wayne and Adrian Garrett. (I had heard of Adrian, but didn't know that he was a Cub. I recall, when Wayne was a Met, hearing that he had a brother who was an Atlanta Brave.)
  17. Bill Wakefield also made a post on the UMDB back in 2004: Memories of May 31, 1964
  18. Actually, you just need to post your URL within HTML tags. Article
  19. Juan Marichal again? He's always either signing underage players or dragging veteran players to cockfights. What's next?
  20. I don't definitively remember any curtain calls prior to 1985, but if you do, G-Fafif, then I believe you. If anything, it certainly became a lot more commonplace by 1985, so if Gary Carter thinks that the first curtain call came after his Opening Day homer that year, that I can understand and forgive his misconception. But that business about "quiet" and "out of the spotlight" is just plain nuts. I think it's very unlikely that I'll be reading this book.
  21. You see it as noise, and I do too. But for many fans, it's what makes a day at the ballpark entertaining. And that's why it's not going to go away. None of the teams want to replicate the 1910 baseball experience at the cost of thousands of paying fans.
  22. ] Fisher, along with Ron Hunt (first Met run at Shea) and Tim Harkness (first Met hit at Shea), will pull down the Shea countdown number today. Hopefully there will be a nice online photo of that.
  23. Yeah, Ozzie was probably at the tail end of the era when players had to have offseason jobs. I remember that "offseason jobs" was typical trivia fodder for the little cartoons on the backs of baseball cards. One of the most famous examples from my lifetime is, of course, Richie Hebner and his grave digging.
  24. Ozzie Smith was pretty amazing too. As for me, I think I get more of a buzz from outfield defense. I love it when Carlos Beltran runs down a fly ball that's been hit over his head, and I get a kick out of seeing old clips of Willie Mays and Sandy Amoros and Ron Swoboda and Tommie Agee.
  25. I always wondered about his wardrobe tastes. I never see anyone wearing purple pants, yet that's the only thing Banner ever wore. He must get them in bulk discount or something.
