  1. Cubs have the bases loaded with none out in the second. Cedeno batting. DEE-FENCE!
  2. I just realized that there are no weekend Mets games in DC this year. AND there are no weekend Nationals games at Shea. The schedule is really nuts.
  3. Anyone know why the Mets are playing two games at Wrigley this year, and the Cubs are playing four at Shea? Is there going to be a similar shift with another Central Division club? Or is this just one of those inexplicable quirks that comes with the wacky schedule? Or is the pope somehow at fault?
  4. I feel like I just watched a bunch of pitchers take batting practice in Spanish.
  5. I bet those guys have unapproved skating rinks in their backyards.
  6. What smg58 said. But the lack of depth behind Delgado is a bit alarming. What if he breaks his leg tomorrow? I guess they'd go out and get somebody, but it would probably be somebody of Brady Clark caliber. (Brady's another guy who's never played a single game at first base.) It's nice that they have some quality prospects like Carp and others, but none of them appear ready for 2008, and probably not for 2009 either.
  7. On the other hand, them swinging at the first pitch gets you an earlier bedtime.

(I had expected it would be blacked out from Extra Innings, but it wasn't. I didn't even check to see if I was getting it on ESPN.) It was strange to see ads for buying Mets tickets on Mets.com on the wall behind the catcher, as seen from the center field camera. Mets advertisements at Wrigley Field? Of course, it was just a computer-generated ad on the green screen, but it was strange nevertheless. They also showed an ad for the Loudmouths show on SNY. (The title alone of that show ensures that I'll never watch it.)
  9. Triple Dee wrote: ="Benjamin Grimm"]Orlando Hernandez in August of next year. But I don't see it happening with Delgado. You mean August of this year, right? If Delgado hasn't started hitting by July, do they trade for somebody and start Delgado occasionally against righties, or as a PH, and then keep him off the post-season roster? I meant next year. (He's signed through 2009, isn't he? Maybe I'm wrong.) Keep Delgado off the post-season roster? A lot has to happen (meaning a lot of bad play by Delgado and a lot of good play by the team as a whole) before that even becomes a possibility. I think if Delgado plays so poorly that he loses his job, it's not too likely that there's going to be a post-season roster.
  10. I wouldn't take Wilpon's statement as the absolute truth. Interpret that as, "I don't want to eat any more contracts." The time will come when he'll do it. (Some possibilities: Luis Castillo in July of 2011, Orlando Hernandez in August of next year.) But I don't see it happening with Delgado.
  11. Tomorrow is another Wacky Wednesday, as we close all three games from the weekend series in Philadelphia. Voting for Saturday's and Sunday's games are still a little bit light; it looks like some regular voters may not have voted yet. If that means you, please be sure to vote some time today. 13. They're going to have to ride it out with Delgado for this year. Who would replace him at first? They could sign Frank Thomas, but that sounds like an awful idea. They're not going to promote a guy from Single A, or from Binghamton on the basis of two good weeks. Otherwise, who do you have? Tatis?
  14. Maine 3 Sanchez 1 Chavez 1
  15. Delgado's 2006, which helped the Mets to a division title, prevents me from regretting the trade.
  16. First base is one of the most intriguing positions for the Mets right now. They have a few guys who might be able to ascend to the big leagues, but I think the odds are that the Mets will end up importing somebody to replace Delgado, either for 2009 (most likely) or 2010 (less likely, but still possible). I'd love to see one of the homegrown kids make it, but first base is considered a position that you want big offense from, and will a contending team hand that job to a rookie? I think that rookie would have to make a very strong case for himself.
  17. Had he become a Met, he would have been very hard to like. What did the fans in Seattle and Texas think of him? Was he less of a jerk when he was younger? Or did the fans forgive him his jerkishness? Or was he little-liked in those cities too but we just didn't hear about it?
  18. Maybe you're right; I really don't know. I just can't recall any time a player in Thomas' situation ever negotiated anything more than the pro-rated minimum from his new team. But it just may be that few of the cut-loose and highly-compensated players have had more than one suitor.
  19. Anyway, it will be interesting to see where Kai Gronauer lands. The article quoted above implies that he'll land in Single A, so that would make Brooklyn the most likely destination, I'd think. But if he were to end up in St. Lucie it would indicate that he's on a bit of a fast track. Gulf Coast or Kingsport, not so much.
  20. AG/DC wrote: Seattle is squatted. He's probably one of those guys, like Rickey, who clears waivers but still has enough leverage and suitors after to negotiate up from the major league minimum. So releasing turns out financially good in the short run. Would that do him any good though? I'm not sure how this works, but I thought that if he was able to get more money out of his new team, it would just reduce the amount that the Blue Jays end up owing him. He does have a contract for 2008 and it's still in effect.
  21. I was wondering about that, too. I think the NY insignia on both versions of the black cap are too crowded. Even the blue-brim cap might look better with a simple orange insignia on the black crown.
  22. On both of these polls so far, I've only seen the big city film and not the challenger. I suppose the right thing to do is to refrain from voting unless you've seen both films. (Or really love the one that you did see, I guess.)
  23. I predicted the Bronx because Hank may have his father's lust for big names, despite whether they fit in or not.
  24. Yikes! My favorite German team is 0 and 6! Time to jump off the bandwagon!
