Amazing!
Even his fans are admitting by this point that his defense has slipped and the only questions that remain about position change is when and where not if.
Elvis Andrus might have to wait until Jeter dies because he may still be winning these things years after his retirement.

I have no problem with any of the other AL picks
C - Mauer
1B - Teixeira
2B - Cano
3B - Longoria
OF - Crawford, Suzuki, Gutierrez
P - Buehrle

I think it's great that he cares so much about the game's history. I assume he won this Gold Glove by placing a winning bid at an auction of Vic Power's estate. Correct?

tex and cano have decidedly mediocre UZRs, per fangraphs. jeter's is not good, but still slightly ahead of jose's.

top UZRs belong to the following al'ers:

1b daric barton 12.7 | lyle overbay 0.1 | 5 of 8 mark teixiera -2.9
2b mark ellis 9.8 | orlando hudson 9.7 | 5 of 8 robinson cano -0.6
ss alexei ramirez 10.8 | cliff pennington 9.9 | 7 of 9 derek jeter -4.7
3b kevin kouzmanoff 16.1 | adrian beltre 11.8 | 3 of 8 evan longoria 11.1
rf ichiro suzuki 15.6 | j.d. drew 3.8
cf julio borbon 8.9 | franklin gutierrez 7.3
lf brett gardner 22.3 | carl crawford 18.5

well, the voters did better in the outfield at least...

Wait a minute, Derek Jeter had a worse UZR than Seven of Nine?

Baseball Reference has a fielding statistic called "Total Zone Total Fielding Runs Above Average" which is a combination statistic that measures the number of runs above or below average the player was worth based on the number of plays made.

That statistic suggests that Franklin Gutierrez was 15 runs above average for AL centerfielders, which was best among all players that played there full-time in 2010.

Same statistic has Jeter at 10 runs below average for AL shortstops. That would be LAST among all players at shortstop in the AL.

See Ratty Palmeroid, who played a total of 28 games at first one year and won a gold glove!

Correct, and one bad season cost David Wright a string of Gold Gloves.

Well, that, and the fact that David Wright isn't a fantastic defensive third baseman.

As Gwreck pointed out, Jeter was 59th out of 59 shortstops in Total Zone Rating.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/AL/2010-specialpos_ss-fielding.shtml#players_standard_fielding::13

This year he showed the range of a manhole cover. This was tuchus licking of the highest (or is it lowest?) magnitude.

Rob Neyer had this to say on ESPN regarding Jeter winning a Gold Glove for 2010.

"It's his fifth, which means he's now won at least four more Gold Gloves than he's deserved."

Boomer and Carton on WFAN absolutely embarassing themselves this morning with their ignorant defense of Jeter's win.
"He had the best fielding percentage and the fewest errors." That's an exact quote from Carton.
They also threw in a complaint about the "bloggers" who worry about range, etc.

I know, shame on me for even listening. But I was hoping someone, anyone, would call in and confront them.

Let 'em go.

Really, if folks want to inflate the notion of what Jeter is accomplishing with his glove, bat, grace, and gentle mannerisms, and even give him awards for it, perhaps we should stand back and let them. It only inflates the price of his contract and extends the length of time they're going to foolishly stick with him.

Seriously, imagine the Yankees with A-Rod at short and $19 million worth of athlete at third base. How many championships has he cost them already? Two?

Amazinly, the Snooze made the Jeter Injustice the back-page story today. FOOLS GOLD

The problem is the article is a typical wishywashy John Harper piece, focusing on the voting process and lacking the courage to come out and say what a joke it was.

Derek Jeter is the key to Yankee glory. If they don't re-sign him for 10years/$250M, they'll rue the day.

Hee Hee Hee.

Brett Favre sent them texts, too?

(It's the Samuels bit, about how he undermined Manuel and Randolph, and how his off-field player ties are still potentially problematic.)
