Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Tonight the Red Hot Mets face their arch-rivals in Philadelphia for the first time this season. Is this a big deal?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I'm somewhere in between. The way peeps have been waiting to turn on this team and celebrate the inevitable ouster of their management, they've all been big games thus far. Many scribes --- and many fans --- are still desperate to declare this last run a complete illusion if the team doesn't take this series. So I guess I say pretty big, if only for the un-necessary psychological urgency to prove something to the unfaithful faithful.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I think sweeping the Phillies would make a strong statement and could set the tone for the rest of the season.Getting swept by the Phillies will be a big letdown, a burst of the gonfalon bubble.Anything in between, it's just an early-season three-game series.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 One game at a time. That's all they can play.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Well _I_ http://www.ceetar.com/optimisticmetsfan/2010/04/30/first-place-mets-play-for-respect/ think it's a big deal, in an overly dramatic way.In actual baseball terms, not so much. But it would go a long way towards giving the Mets some confidence, getting fans to believe, and making Morgan and Miller have to figure out something nice to say Sunday night about the Mets.
Guest attgig Guests Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 this series is a big deal, not so much just this game. how we win or lose will be a big deal.In the end, a 9-1 homestand doesn't mean much if we get swept, or start losing in devastating fashion late in the ball game.if the mets can get to halladay and beat him, it'll be huge.if they get completely shut down by him, it'll be huge. This series has huge implications.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 It's certainly the first big game of the year. We haven't seen the Giants yet but with that possible exception, Philadelphia certainly looks like the best team in the league (other than us). I don't think we need to sweep, but certainly take 2 of 3.We have a clear pitching advantage on Sunday and probably a small advantage tonight so yeah, it's a big game.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Edgy DC wrote:I'm somewhere in between.Yeah me too.I agree that winning 2 of 3 would be a big, big boost both to the team and the fans, but 'wide-ranging implications'? It is just another 3 game set. I think it really depends on how they play and the types of games they are as opposed to actual wins and losses. That being said - getting swept would be a big-time bummer.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I'm sort of interested in how they do tonite -- I think if Niese and the lineup acquit themselves well, win or lose, we can look at it as a positive. So to that extent it's a Big Game.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 It's only a big deal if the Mets do really well. If they get knocked around, then it's just another 3 game set in April/May.See kids, that's called "hedging my bets."
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I just see it as maybe a monkey/back kind of thing. If they take this series, they can get some wiggle room and maybe lose one next week without cries of falling skies.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 It may nice to face thiem with Reyes healthy, and Rollins not. A little reversal of fate, and perhaps an opportunty to not miss.

God forbid you actually listen to the callers, Mike. Ugh.

The callers tend to reflect the attitude of the host to an extent. He cuts people off enough to make their points sound stupid too. A Yankee caller was discussing Girardi's use of CC (and he wasn't being very coherent anyway) but he tried to say that he didn't think CC should be out there in the first inning. (i assume he meant 8th, or some other inning) but Francesa cut him off and hung up on him and then called him an idiot for the first inning comment. Rather than delving into the substance of what he was actually trying to say.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 'Tis a big series...win one boys and I'll be lighting the cigar.....On Francesa the other day a mets fan called up saying how he didn't like the lineup Jerry is trotting out there now....Reyes has go to be hitting first and Castillo hitting ninth .....both the caller and Francesa just started talking very loudly over each other...the caller was a complete moron.

Guest themetfairy Guests Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 The season is a marathon, not a sprint. One game at a time.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Since we're ranting about Francesa callers - it particularly tightens my colon when a caller starts speaking 'for ALL Mets fans'. ALL Mets fans? Dude, shut the fuck up.

Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted April 30, 2010 Author Posted April 30, 2010 Well, it looks like I'm in the minority on this one, but I can't remember ever being this excited about a game in April (that wasn't opening day). Can't wait until 7:05 pm.

Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I never minded the ratings guessing game when it was with Russo. I guess the back and forth about how interesting a particular event was had interest versus Mikey just telling us what he thinks is important. He asserts himself a lot more, because there is never any disagreement. "No way Tiger wins this one. Not a chance. He doesn't come from behind."
