how would that be any worse than the frequently used figure of speech "stepping on a land mine" with respect to people around the world who suffered from logn abandoned mine fields?

i dont mind criticizing sterling for being stupid and not at all clever with his hom run calls, but lets be fair here, i dont find it the slightest bit offensive.

FORT WORTH, Texas - Former major league outfielder Mel Hall is on trial on sexual assault charges, accused of repeated advances on a 12-year-old girl he coached on an elite basketball team a decade ago.

Hall's accuser, now 23, took the stand Monday in a Fort Worth courtroom. She said Hall engaged in sex acts with her in various places, including her home and Hall's apartment. Defense attorneys for the 48-year-old Hall were to present their case Tuesday.

Hall was arrested in 2007 by police in a Fort Worth suburb investigating allegations of sexual abuse. He faces up to life in prison on three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and two counts of indecency with a child.

Hall's 13-year major league career ended in 1996. He played for the Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians, Yankees and San Francisco Giants.

The woman testified that Hall first exposed himself to her and her younger brother at home, when their parents were away. The boy testified that he thought they were playing a game and never told his parents.

Hall's interaction with the girl progressed to inappropriate touching and him instructing her how to perform oral sex, she testified. She said he also showed her pornographic movies at an apartment Hall shared with his girlfriend and their infant son.

"I trusted him," the woman testified. "I honestly had no idea anything was inappropriate at the time. I looked up to him. I just thought this is how normal people act."

The investigation also involved a 14-year-old girl who played on the team. Hall faces charges in that case. A trial is pending.

Yeah, I don't think it's a case of class at this point. He's in a Catch 22. The best thing he can do to save his life is not drink. The only way he can see to cope with the horror of what he's done is to drink.

The world is filled with two types of people to him --- those who think he's a waste of protoplasm who should be spit on if acknowledged at all, and those he thinks see him that way.

Maybe not. It's a hell of a burden to carry around is all I'm saying.

A top New York Yankees prospect is not who he claims to be, sources tell SI.com. Two weeks ago, the Yankees signed a shortstop purporting to be 16-year-old Damian Arredondo from the Dominican Republic to an $850,000 bonus. Now Major League Baseball's Department of Investigations has determined that Arredondo is not the player's real name and that he is older than 16.

The Yankees signed the player they thought was Arredondo on July 2, the first day that major league teams are permitted to sign international free agents as young as 16. The Yankees were impressed with the switch-hitter's strong arm and speed -- he reportedly ran a 60-yard-dash in 6.4 seconds.

According to a new Major League Baseball rule, a player found to have used a fraudulent identity cannot sign with another club for one year. Major League Baseball has recently increased its efforts to deter identity fraud in Latin America by hiring new investigators and dispatching other investigators from its New York City office to oversee the process.

In general, sources say that MLB will be working with authorities in the Dominican Republic to bring criminal charges against the orchestrators of fraud -- often the trainers and agents who stand to make large percentages of the prospects' signing bonuses.

Mark Newman, the Yankees Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations, says that he has not received official notification of the outcome of the Arredondo investigation. The Yankees did not lose any money on the prospect because his bonus was contingent on the outcome of the investigation. Newman expressed gratitude that the investigative process was swift, allowing the team time to continue searching for prospects among the pool of free agents who have not yet been signed.

Last week, the Yankees also signed Dominican catcher Gary Sanchez, for $3 million. According to his agent, Brian Mejia, Sanchez has already passed his investigation.

Re: Last night's game -- could you imagine the cacophony from talk-radio and other YLDBs if it were ARod to make the error which broke up Pettitte's perfect game w/2 outs in the 7th rather than temporary ARod replacement Jerry Hairston Jr.?

Pettitte went on to lose his no-hitter on the next batter anyway and the shut-out the following inning but of course THOSE could have/would have been blamed on ARod as well for breaking AP's concentration and making him work out of the stretch, etc, things we know his SS would never do.
