Teixeira to Braves?

one Major League scout confirmed the Braves and Rangers are still discussing a trade that would be headlined with Teixeira and almost definitely include Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Atlanta's 22-year-old switch-hitting catcher who stands as one of the most attractive prospects on the trade market.

Another National League scout said the Braves might be discussing also including a young pitching prospect (possibly Jo-Jo Reyes) and Elvis Andrus, the 18-year-old phenom shortstop who is currently experiencing the struggles of the maturation process with Class A Myrtle Beach.

While Andrus has been promoted as one of the game's next great shortstops, the scout said, "[braves general manager] John Schuerholz will deal a kid like that if the deal is right."

What might a comparable offer be? I'm not aware of the Mets having coveted young infielders and catchers, so we couldn't match position-by-position. (I don't know if Texas would be interested in Andrus and Saltalamacchia because they want to fill certain positions, or because they're looking for the best available young players.)

If it's the latter, would Humber, Gomez, and F. Martinez be comparable? Or could Carp be substituted for one of the two young outfielders?

Aren't there still several years left on Delgado's contract? Where would Texiera play? or are you also assuming we'd be able to move Delgado without essentially paying him AND Texeira?

I think there's one year left for Delgado, but I'm not sure of that.

I agree, but that's a pipe dream and a half right now. We'd have to cover Delgado's contract, put together a package that includes a high ceiling, ML-ready player like Saltalamacchia, and work out an extension with Teixeira.

I doubt that "working out an extension" would be part of the deal.

Fans always want that, but it's rarely part of the package. Most of the time the receiving team has to gamble that they'll either be able to resign the guy, or that he contributes enough during his short stay to make the trade worthwhile.

Not as part of the deal, just something that I'd assume the Mets would do seeing as they've hypothetically traded away an upper-tier prospect and would have no other options at first.

As per Cot's Contracts (http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/) Delgado is under contract for '08 with an option for '09 that vests depending on a "point system." He needs 30 points in 05-08 for the option to vest. 10 pts for League MVP, 9 for 2nd, 8 for 3rd, etc. 20 points for WS MVP, 10 for LCS MVP.

Delgado currently has 5 of the 30 necessary points, from the 2005 MVP vote.

If the option doesn't vest, there is still a $12 million mutual option or a $4 million buyout.

Since breaking into the majors with Texas in 2003, Teixeira has had seasons of 26, 38, 43 and 33 home runs. Only Ralph Kiner, Albert Pujols and Eddie Mathews hit more than the 140 homers that Teixeira had in his first four major league seasons. He had at least 33 homers and 110 RBIs in each of the past three.

Old rumor, but still something to be considered. It would absolutely make my day. After taking two steps forward on offense with Teixeira, it'd be a big step back dealing Renteria for a powerfully mediocre starter.

i keep on forgetting that teixeira is signed for next year as well... i agree. bad, very bad. i'm more concerned about it for next year than this one, tho. the braves still need more pitching, and their 3 4 & 5 starters are chuck james, buddy carlyle and jo-jo reyes, with the "venerable" bob wickman coming in for the 9th inning, and apparently smoltzy might be coming down with a sore shoulder to boot.

now, the mets do still need to make a move here, of course, but this is not the end of the world/season.

Braves are gutting their farm system for a playoff run, which amuses me because they still have 4 teams ahead of them in the wild card race and are 4.5 back in the division with 2 teams to pass.

They've really been going with a patch-work at 1st for years now.
A mixture of part-timers, platoons, young rookies, and hanging-on vets; many of them
not really 1st-basemen by trade:
(Franco, Bonilla, Saltalamacchia, Helms)


Teixeira def gives them a jolt - for both this year and next - although it's not like he's
hitting THAT much better than the guy he was traded for.


One interesting side-note about the 21 y/o Salatalamacchia I picked up from the last few days:
his 37 year old wife is about to give birth to their 2nd child.
She was previously his HS teacher who started a relationship with him when he was 18

CINCINNATI -- Right-hander Kyle Lohse is headed to Philadelphia in a trade for a minor league pitcher.

Lohse is 6-12 with a 4.58 ERA this season in 21 starts.

In return, Cincinnati gets 23-year-old left-hander Matt Maloney from the Phillies' organization. Maloney, who has pitched this season at Double-A Reading, is 9-7 with a 3.94 ERA in 21 starts. He leads the Eastern League in innings pitched and is fourth in strikeouts.

He is rated as the ninth-best prospect in the Phillies' organization.
