What was the signifigance of the Shilling/Phillies game?
Was that just and extra inning win?
I dont recall....

Too bad the quality is so bad, cuz Im positive that Im in that panned shot of the crowd on the field at the end of the 73 playoffs. I was one of the first on the field from the 3rd base side of the Reds dugout.

I keep lookin but cant tell.

I went from the stands to the baseline in between 3rd and home, then towards home (where there was a pile on), paused, and then ran straight for the mound. Then just whooped it up all over the field.

Someday Ill find some clear footage of this.

I never noticed it before, but you could see in the clip where he shouts GO! and waves to the baserunner in front of him to keep going.
So he did want to run that out.

What a great find. It's amazing how many of those great moments came in '99. That really was a special year. I don't give a shit they didn't win it all, that was one of my favorite Mets teams ever.

Just off the top of my head, I can remember these memorable games, all from '99:

1. Mets-Padres - Piazza's HR off Wagner to win it in the 9th

2. The Schilling game

3. Matt Franco beats Mariano Rivera

4. Friday night Pittsburgh game when the Mets were all but done. Franco gets a favorable call on a borderline pitch to keep the Mets alive.

5. Sunday Pittsburgh game where Brad Clontz uncorks a wild pitch.

6. Alfonzo's Grand Slam.

7. Todd Pratt walk-off.

8. Olerud beats Rocker in Game 4 of the NLCS

9. The Grand Slam Single.

What a year.

It may have happened many times in the early 20th century, before the scoring rule was changed. I read that Babe Ruth lost one home run because of a rule in effect then. Let's say the score was tied and the batter came up in the bottom of the ninth with the winning run on third. If the batter hit a home run, he only got credited for a single (the minimum hit necessary to score the winning baserunner(s).
Even though home runs were hit with less frequency in those days, I'd have to guess it happened more than once.

Roughly this many times.

I think something specific like that where the guy got mobbed before finishing his trot might be a lot rarer. Even where fans gave run on the field (Aaron, Chambliss, etc.), they've let the guy touch home plate.

They discovered those "lost" HRs in the late '60s when they first started to computerize baseball's records. That uncovering, seeing as how it came just when Aaron was approaching Ruth's record, sparked a mini-debate over whether the Babe should get credited with his 715th HR and move Hank's target ever so slightly.
As I remember it, the Commish (Kuhn) quickly decided that the records should stand based on the rules as they were at the time.
