But they retain him as a potential pinch-hitter if needed.  A defensible strategy, certainly.

Well he’s was out due to the thumb so might be sore enough to cause him not to be able to field easily as well

The Mets were only going to hit once more (most likely) and the pitcher's slot was going to be, where it traditionally was, in the #9 spot as Alvarez was both the last out of T-8 and the guy being double-switched out for Torrens, so it was unlikely that spot would ever come to bat.  So not a high risk move and it got them better defenders in the OF and behind the plate.

Yikes. Did he really try stealing 2nd down 3 runs in the ninth?  There is some dumb baseball being played in SF. 
 

was questioning bringing the IF in against Torrens, but that move is at lease justifiable.

It is even harder to defend in that the Mets were holding him — which the Mets booth were openly questioning.

It's one thing if the firstbaseman is playing 30 feet away and they're giving you the bag.  Sure, if you're 100% sure you can make it running backwards, maybe take the gift and take the double-play off the table. 

But if they're actually defending you, you're actually helping your team by staying put, giving the batter a hole on the right side and forcing the pitcher to pitch from the stretch and look over at you and think about you as he throws. 

I remember a teammate named Scott making this mistake when I was 15 — ending the game getting caught stealing when we were down four (I was on deck), and I couldn't explain to him that his mistake wasn't getting caught, but going in the first place, and as you might imagine, he really didn't want to hear about it.  I just wanted to say, "Look, just watch Tim McCarver and he'll explain it all to you."

A cool thing about this series is seemingly everybody contributed.  The only guy who they seemed to be carrying was LIndor for the last two games, but he got his licks in too in the first half of the series.

Did anyone else not like Robert's steal in the top of the 8th? It worked, of course. It led to a big inning. But if he got caught, and he really should have been as Arraez had him dead to rights, we're left with a runner on third and two outs, and you need a hit from a relatively weak hitter in Torrens to tie the game.

Roberts is fast but he doesn't exactly seem like a good base stealer.

They didn't isolate the runner on third, but the idea may have been a delayed double steal.  Clearly, Arraez was distracted by Tayor, who may have had room for a big lead with an opposite field hitter (Torrens) at the plate.  I'm guessing Taylor made a fake break, and stole the out from Arraez.

But yeah, with Robert ending the Mets' ridiculously long streak of no would-be stealers thrown out by catchers, and him being dead to rights, he may be in that Jay Payton/Juan Lagares category of guys fast enough to play center well, but not quick enough to steal bases particularly effectively.

So much of base stealing is getting a big lead and reading pitchers.  Great speed is a huge help, but runners that can time pitchers and get a big jump are tough to catch.  Also, choosing the right pitch to run on can make success more likely.  Much tougher for a catcher to get rid of the ball as quickly on a splitter or back foot slider than it is on a fastball.  Studying pitchers tendencies is a big part of being a successful base stealer.
