Gelbs:

BREAKING: Francisco Alvarez fractured his hamate bone in his left hand yesterday. He's going to have surgery and will be out 6-8 weeks.

HOW WILL HE DRIVE IN TWENTY-FIVE ?

José Siri: Well, I may not be the strongest offensive player, but the offense is deep enough that I'm probably going to bat ninth.

Francisco Álvarez: Hold my beer.

José Siri: What?

Francisco Álvarez: Seriously, hold my beer. I just broke my hamate.

Luis Torrens has looked good this spring and I think he's a better able backup catcher than many teams have. Of course I thought that last year about Omar Narvaez so what the hell do I know.

Oh crap!

I don't think Parada is ready.

Maybe Chris Williams?

A few veteran free agent catchers are still unsigned—including Yasmani Grandal and James McCann.

This thread makes ot seem as though he hurt his hand in a drunk driving mishap.

He hurt it swinging, but not at a key party.

Or maybe Jackson Reetz.

I mean, sure, he's a 29 y/o with just 16 ML ABs to his name ... but HE JUST HIT A 1st INNING GRAND SLAM!!!!

so I think he should be handed the job and we'll just see if Francisco can earn it back when he returns.

After some intensive Jackson Reetz research:

- 29 y/o; 5' 11"/205; R/R

- drafted in the 3rd round by the Nats in 2014 out of the baseball factory that is Norris HS in Firth, Nebraska

- spent the decade since being drafted almost entirely in the minors with typical backup catcher stats: low BA, high walks, puncher's power [.239/.350/.413]

- 2 ABs w/the Nats in 2021 but then dropped at the end of the season

- signed with the Brewers (2/21) then dropped, signed with the Royals (8/22) then dropped, resigned w/the Royals (12/22) then dropped,

signed w/the Giants (6/23) and got 14 ABs with the big club in 2024, then dropped

- signed as a FA by the Mets 11/21/24

Chris Williams, as noted above, is immediately behind Torrens in the depth chart. He is guaranteed to make you forget Mike Nickeas, but Jakson Reetz and Kevin Parada and Hayden Senger are all in the mix as well, despite Parada being sent to minor-league camp already.

No depth at catcher

I hope this doesn't become the season from hell

Does Reetz still have rookie status?

He has played very sparingly in two major league seasons. But his Baseball reference page doesn't say if he exceeded the rookie status time on a major league roster.

You're making that up

Seriously, you really believe that?

If it doesn't say that, then I guess he doesn't, but I don't see how that's of any consequence.

There was a question on another board asking if there are any rookies who will make the club this year. I couldn't find that info on b-ref.
