Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2024 Author Posted December 4, 2024 https://x.com/DavidPingalore/status/1861297302016610461This guys tweeted last night that an announcement is "imminent" and that the deal was done. I wish I knew how to embed tweets.Anyway, safe to say that there's been no announcement and now his credibility is in question.

I am being told an announcement is imminent for the 26 year old landing with the @Mets. His agent Scott Boras was on hand for Snell announcement. The chatter is real. Stay tuned #mets @ktla @KTLA5SPORTS#juansoto
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 I just read a thing that David “Ping” Pingalore is a relative of Pinky Tuscadero and that she has issued a statement that the guy know his stuff! So who knows....
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 If the Mets lose out on Soto (shudder) I hope they have another big signing waiting in the wings for immediate announcement. A delay would be a buzz kill.Later
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 I'm pretty sure they don't, unless perhaps it's a pitcher. For position players, I don't think anything "big" is going to happen until Soto is resolved.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 So you think that the Mets might have already signed a player but are managing to keep it a secret with the idea of pulling it out after Soto makes a decision in some yet-to-be-determined time frame?I'm going with a 'No' on that one.

But both parties have agreed to wait for the Soto announcement because it is a Boras client. Later
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 Boooo! Somebody else got Juan Soto!!Yaaay! We got Trevor Bauer!!
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 I'm not too excited about this, which is why I only keep checking back to this thread every fifteen minutes.Later
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2024 Author Posted December 5, 2024 Jeff Passan was on ESPN last night. He says no signing is imminent. All five teams still alive, meetings will be held this weekend. He expects there will be a resolution before the start of the Winter Meetings. DAMN YOU DAVID PINGALORE
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Well, the winter meetings start in four days, so that's imminent adjacent, I guess.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 That's what I was thinking. So, this weekend? Soon enough for me.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Today is the anniversary-ish of David Wright signing his megadeal.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 Mendoza Jr needs to learn to keep his mouth shut.P.S. I doubt he knows what the offer is because there's no reason why his dad should know what the offer is.

Why wouldn't he know?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 Yeah, I'm not sure what to make of that. The manager doesn't need to be in the loop on these negotiations, but that doesn't mean he isn't. It really depends on what internal relationship he has with Stearns and Cohen.

Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2024 Author Posted December 6, 2024 It's such a strange negotiation. With the opt out, or I'd imagine, multiple opt-outs, it's tough to know how much the back end of that contract even matters. Let's say you give him 15 years. In all likelihood, that will moot when he opts out in 3,4,5 years, and if for some reason he's injured at his first opt out, he might use his second one later on.I would guess that in addition to the dollars and years, there needs to be time to work out the specifics. How much is the signing bonus, etc. I would guess a team willing to front load the contract (meaning the years before the opt out) would have a significant advantage. That can be where the Mets have an advantage. Front load the contract, tack on years to the back end bringing down the luxury tax, knowing that Soto will opt out in 3-5 years anyway.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 I can't imagine that he's in any hurry to wrap things up if five teams are still in active pursuit.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 I fear the Mets are bidding against themselvesNot surprised if the Yankees win this
