Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2023 Posted September 27, 2023 Once the season ends, a lot of focus will be on Pete Alonso. Will he be traded? Will he be extended? Will he become a free agent? What's gonna happen????
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2023 Posted September 27, 2023 anything other than option 1 should lead to a fan revolt. unless maybe we could trade him for miguel cabrera, dontrelle willis, and a time machine.

Bob Alpacadaca Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2023 Posted September 27, 2023 The Polar Bear will continue to play in Queens for years to come!
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2023 Posted September 27, 2023 Looks like we all feel that way
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2023 Posted October 2, 2023 I feel.like Anthony is reading a lot into those words
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2023 Posted October 2, 2023 He also said, "Pete Alonso is a great player... I expect Pete to the opening day first baseman next year."
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2023 Posted October 2, 2023 I know how I feel and I know what the Mets said after the deadline, but I wasn't sure about Stoins. I'd guess it's 70/30 Pete is here past '24. But I damn sure hope he is.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 2, 2023 Posted October 2, 2023 The thing is ... you'd be a fool to make promises about an unsigned player, as it puts you in an awful bargaining position.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2023 Posted October 2, 2023 Apparently there was some flirtation with the Brewers about Pete at the deadline I would be comfortable to suggest the Mets asked about minor leaguer Jackson Chourio. Chourio is thought to be a generational talent by many in mlbBrewers said no and life goes onI can't think of anyone who is happier to be a Met than Pete Alonso
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2023 Author Posted October 2, 2023 It seems clear that the Brewers and Mets talked about Alonso. But it's not at all clear how significant that is.It may just be that the Brewers approached the Mets, and the Mets listened and rejected a deal. It doesn't mean that the Mets were "shopping" Alonso, although many seem to have drawn that conclusion.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 Big Pete swinging for the fences
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2023 Author Posted October 5, 2023 Okay, so an extension this offseason looks a lot less likely.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 damn. maybe shoulda signed him already then.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 Will definitely leverage fan anxiety to sweat Cohen for the $$.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 Brandon Nimmo did the exact same thing: sign with Boras in the off-season just before his option or walk year. Anyway, good for Pete.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 I would more strongly consider a trade today than I would have yesterday. Boras brings the vast majority of his big names to free agency. If the right offer came along, I would tell Pete we love you and we will be in on the bidding in a year, but given Boras' track record we need to take a goo deal if it raises.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 Trading Pete Alonso for a tub of goo. What an insult that would be.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 Boras Schmoras, make Pete an offer he can't refuse before Thanksgiving.Lotta dough, a couple extra dumbass years and a merchandise tent in theparking lot. See what I did there? Bing, Bang, Boom and done!
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 It comes down to Steve Cohen saying yea or nayPete looks like a big guy who could be goo filled himself one dayAgain, what would Steve do?
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 Changed my voteNo need for an agent if you're not for sale
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 Blurb in Sports Illustrated about the Cubs making a run at AlonsoThis is starting to feel like a self fulfilling prophecy
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 If they can reach a deal, they'll reach a deal. If they can't, they won't.Isn't the aversion to Boras kind of past its due date?
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2023 Posted October 5, 2023 Edgy MD wrote:Isn't the aversion to Boras kind of past its due date?Of course it is. Especially here. If the Mets wanna trade Alonso because they think the team will be competitively better off making the trade rather than keeping Alonso, well that's understandable. But trading Alonso because Bora's his agent? Why? Because the Mets might have to pay Alonso $10M or $15M more than the closest other bidder? They're gonna have to do that no matter who Alonso's agent is. I mean $10M or $15M to Cohen, who's worth 15 billion dollars and doesn't even need most of his money? Because how many cars can a person own? He can only drive one of them at a time. Assuming Cohen even drives himself around these days. What's he gonna do with all that extra money? Have three lunches a day and then four dinners at four different four-star restaurants every single evening? Ten or fifteen million dollars to a guy who's a billionaire 15 times over? And who probably has a better chance of doubling his net worth than some regular guy who's worth $75K, given how capitalism works? If Boras can elicit higher offers for the same free agent compared to other player agents, then he's doing a terrific job and every free agent should sign with Boras.
