I'm pretty strong with my '70's and early '80's SF guys.

Had a nice run of sub-3% answers going ... and then I guessed that Tony Conigliaro had a 6 WAR season on his resume.

Nope!

I find a way to fuck up this game almost every time.

On my way to a good one today but put my Detroit center fielder (Damion Easley) in the Indian-Tiger box by accident, then they wouldn't let me guess Easley again, so I dove into Mofo GET THIS GUY lore and selected Bobby Higginson (1%). Was struggling for Indian-Tiger anyway.

Met row: Backman (1%)-Heidemann (0.1%)-Luplow (0.03%)

CF-SS pick: Elliott Maddox (0.01%)

As happens on most days when I remember to play I.G., an obvious answer, in this case Soto, doesn't occur to me. So I guessed that SDP was one of Gary Carter's post-NYM teams for the WAS(MTL)/SDP answer.

Nope!

And I also couldn't remember Edwin Jackson's name (which was a correct SDP/WAS answer) even though I could picture him.

These are several of the reasons why I complete approximately .0007% of these correctly.

I completed the grid today, with a not-so-impressive rarity score of 200. But I managed to use two lesser-known brothers of Hall-of-Fame pitchers: Paul Dean and Henry Mathewson.

I pulled a 3 rarity today. New record. Also used Negro League HOF players. Helped out by my knowledge of late '70's- early '80's Giants.

NEG/P Andy Cooper 0.04

NEG/C Biz Mackey 1

NEG/SS Willard Brown 0.10

SF/P Fred Breining 0.05

SF/C John Tamargo 0.04

SF/SS Rob Andrews 0.04

STL/P Jason Simontacchi 0.2

STL/C Eli Marrero 0.9

STL/SS Jose Uribe 0.03

Tried to beat down my rarity score by avoiding Paige & Gibson but wound up striking out

Ankeil (5%)-Torre (2%)-Ken Rietz (0.09%)

I got all 9 but rarity schmarity I say. I legit could not come up with another Giants C or Cardinals SS.

I went with Posey and Ozzie too. Once I used Satchell Paige and Roy Campanella, my rarity score was already shot.

I too had Tim McCarver as catcher for the Cardinals. Willie Mays as my Negro League shortstop got me a 2, which was nice. Henry Mathewson as a Giants pitcher was an 0.02%, which may be the lowest number I've ever seen. Paul Dean as a Cardinals pitcher was 0.8%. My Giants shortstop was Chris Spier, at 4%.

Posted

I wasn't aware that only Negro League stats for 1948 and prior were recognized. So I didn't get credit for Hank Aaron as a shortstop.

Posted

I thought they were asking for Negro Lg players who then played one of those positions in MLB so, in my mind, Josh Gibson wouldn't

work because I knew he never played in an AL or NL game ... and I had ZERO chance of coming up with a different Negro Lg catcher.

Went with Paige as my Negro Lg pitcher and Jackie as the SS - both of which worked no matter how the question is interpreted.

Didn't matter in the long run because I fucked up elsewhere as I always do, this time conflating Mike Laga with Mike Lavalliere. Both played

for StL and both Looked like catchers, but only Lavalliere actually was. Guess which one I picked?

I did like my choice of Mays for SFG SS, which he did play at one point during that 23 inning game vs the Mets, and also tabbing Jose Oquendo

as the StL minimum one game pitcher, he toed the slab three times in total including one four-inning stint.

My Mets column was good today at least. (Pumpsie Green, JJ Putz, Jerry Grote)

I never get Twins categories correct.

Also, Larry Dierker wasn't the strikeout compiler I thought he was

My best score ever today. I'm pretty bad at this, so usually I just try for immaculate and don't worry about the rarity score. This time, I was fairly confident in my answers, so I tried for rarity.

Overall 69

A's Dodgers - Piazza 6

A's Cubs - Ken Holtzman 4

A's Cy Young - Vida Blue 24

3.00 ERA Dodgers - Bob Welch 0.3

3.00 ERA Cubs - Jake Arrieta 11

3.00 ERA Cy - Don Newcombe 0.2

No-hitter Dodgers - Hideo Nomo 13

No-hitter Cubs - Milt Pappas 8

No-hitter Cy - Seaver 5 (?!?)

It would probably be more challenging to come up with a Cy Young winner who didn't have an ERA below 3.
