JdG to make a rehab start for PSL on Sunday

Probably won't be long, definitely will be over-analyzed, but it does start his clock (20 days?) towards a real life MLB start.

Buster Olney:

“There is a perception in some corners of the industry that if Jacob deGrom follows through with what he said in the spring and opts out of his Mets' contract, the Braves will be the favorites to land him.”

I'm not sure I understand that comment, in part because (1) there was no a link to a story (and hence it by definition is not “clickbait”) and (2) isn't the easier move to just not follow him?

Anyway, Olney's a fine reporter and writer and all, but I do agree it's a seemingly out-of-nowhere comment. I suppose we'll find out in the offseason. I am certain that deGrom will opt-out, and am reasonably certain the Mets aren't likely to be outbid. But definitely there is nothing preventing him from going to Atlanta if he wants to.

He wants to be a Yankee. Pitching this year may endanger that.

Who knows. One of the things Ive adjusted to as a fan, over the years is the idea that when athletes get hurt, especially pitchers, anticipation of when or if they ever come back is such a waste of energy, and that it's just better to imagine that they have been traded away or died.

I was reminded of this the other day when Wayne on the broadcast said ".. and Trevor May is expected back soon.." and it occurred to me I'd nearly forgotten we ever even had him.

It's also why I've been keeping up the Luis Castillo Watch.

Still don't think he'll throw a pitch in the major leagues this season.

So if he doesn't ...

does he still opt out?

what contract will he get ?

You'd have to think Stephen Strasberg feels like a recent comp and that hasn't gone very well...

If he doesn't pitch at all again this year, he'd get a Thor deal - one year, $20M, and then see what happens.

will the Mets GM get himself fired and the Mets will take the month off and he'll walk then or..

but he won't opt out if he doesn't pitch.

also I'm not worried about "soreness" after dialing back up, but it's hard to know if that's the truth of it, because the Mets don't release information and we don't have any reporters that are more than aggregators.

They could've just held the news and had him pitch on friday or whenever. And leaking it DURING the ASG is odd timing.

And then Cohen will step in and, "wait, don't go... here's $25 mil ya big lug..."

I agree that I think he'll be back, but *if* not...

oh, wait. He's guaranteed $30.5M next year. If he doesn't pitch in 2022, I'd be really surprised to see him opt out, because nobody's giving him that much in a long term deal at 34. He can either pitch 23 and 24 for $60M+, or take $20M in a make-good for 2023 in Arizona or some godforsaken place? No way.

I forgot about that too. If it was in the $20M range, then maybe, or if he was Thor's age, then maybe. But dude turns 35 in the middle of next season. Coming off two injury seasons, nobody's paying him $65M for the next two except us.

I think and hope so too...

I still do wonder about the contract only on the basis that I'm interested... I know let the season play out first ....

I just think that, like Syndergaard 2021, he's got to at least put the merchandise on display for a couple of innings in order to open up the floor for bidding.

I'm certainly hopeful for more than that.

I have no idea what deGrom's thinking. Maybe he simply wants to make as much money as he possibly can. Maybe he's a country boy at heart and deep down, prefers not to play in a city as enormous as NYC. Maybe he'd prefer to play closer to home. Not that the Marlins could afford deGrom. But maybe the Rays? Or, shudder, the Braves? I have no idea. I'm just spitballin' a little bit.
