I love this trade. He's a MLB slugger and an immediate lineup upgrade, OBP/Ks notwithstanding.

We're on. Payable next time we're both in town.

He's an imperfect player (duh) but brings raw power, all caps EXCITEMENT, and elite defense up the middle. The thing this signals to me most, worrisome or not, is a commitment to making Lindor as comfortable as possible, so we get the Lindor we know exists for the next 9+ years. Is that worth Pete Crow-Armstrong? If it works, then most likely yes.

And it's not like Báez is Mike Glavine or anything, he's a very good, in-his-prime player and I'd bet a round of expensive beers at Citi Field they extend or re-sign him.

Is he a very good, in-his-prime player in a way that Jeff McNeil distinctly ain't? Because I'm having trouble making this add up with the decreased playing time for Jeff, who is the team's most reliable hitter right now, and has a lifetime .312 batting average and .860 OPS. The glove can speak for itself, but those are numbers that Javy Baez has rarely ever sniffed, much less sustained over a career.

Ideally, the playing time he gains gets taken from multiple people. But I'd seriously have guessed that a new shortstop was one of the last things the team needed.

Well, you'll see Javy at short for at least a few weeks because it doesn't look like Lindor's coming back anytime soon. I'd expect the playing time losers are Guillorme and Villar. Villar has looked a little logy since he came back from his last injury.

Isn't the ultimate 'plan' to have Lindor at SS, Baez at 2B and McNeil at 3B? I'm

sure I've heard this multiple times. And there's Baez quotes out there that he'll only

play 2B on a team if he can play with Lindor at SS otherwise in any other situation he's

a shortstop.

Same here. But I'm willing to give this management every benefit of the doubt. Plus, who knows how much limbo the 2021 Mets offfense is still in with Lindor IL'd and McNeil perhaps not fully healed. I don't. So maybe Baez truly is a rental. Baez is an asset. Overall, he'll help you win. He just has a strange skill set. He's a spectacular gold-glove caliber defender who can absolutely crush -pulverize the baseball - but who strikes out a heck of a lot and swings at everything - rarely walking.

I still think Javy is kind of a therapy blanket for Lindor, but he's still an elite defender and right-handed power bat, and the team got way deeper offensively and defensively before a maybe playoff run. McNeil will still get reps at second and may platoon at third some when JD comes back, but he hasn't done much damage against lefties this year so I can't blame the Mets much for making this move.

https://www.si.com/mlb/mets/news/report-mets-discussed-blockbuster-deal-with-cubs-mlb-trade-deadline-rumorsReport: Mets Discussed Blockbuster Trade With Cubs At Deadline

Sports Illustrated wrote:
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Mets were talking to the Cubs about a potential blockbuster deal that would have sent 2020 first-round pick Pete Crow-Armstrong, an even higher regarded prospect and a major league player under multi-year control to Chicago in exchange for Kris Bryant, Javier Báez, Trevor Williams and another major league player.

However, the Mets received the news that their ace, Jacob deGrom, was going to be shutdown with right elbow inflammation just hours before the deadline, which would put him out until September at best-case scenario.

Due to the uncertainty surrounding deGrom's status, the Mets decided to make a smaller trade that would slice the initial package in half in the form of Báez and Williams coming to Queens in exchange for Crow-Armstrong, per Rosenthal. This was decided in the final hour prior to the 4 p.m. deadline on July 30.

I'm not sure I see the argument for the half measure. If they figured that losing deGrom meant that they were less likely to make the playoffs with Baez and Bryant, why trade Crow-Armstrong for a package that doesn't include Bryant? Getting less of a boost and still giving up a top prospect?

Well, if they were down on crow armstrong already it makes a little more sense. We don't know who the players in the bryant deal were. Was it mauricio? Vientos? The cubs traded Rizzo away - what if the deal was Baez and Bryant rentals for Dom Smith? I think I would have done that for a team 5 games up with a healthy degrom. Not with the team you have.

I had the post game on when Javy was up. I just sat there wide eyed thinking

shut the fuck up man while you still can. I have nothing against him or his thought

process but there will be plenty who will jump all over it. And an off day tomorrow.

The Post and Snooze back page designers probably ejaculated on themselves.

Probably Davis or McNeil. It's..nice? to have confirmation that the Mets basically intentionally punted the season.

The Mets traded one of their few good prospects for Baez, and two months of him, at the urging of Lindor, who they signed for 10 years and a zillion dollars, and both of them told the fans to "fuck off" today.

I'm not sure what Lindor's involvement was, but they gave up more than the Yankees did for Rizzo and the Giants did for Bryant for what they are now saying was a half-measure (and got somebody that people will now be happy to see go in two months). And they got no relievers, and Rich Hill was the best they could do for the rotation.
