Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 The Alonso projection was stepping in and out of the questions, so let's get right to it.Alonso and Stroman are among the players asking to bring back the black uniforms. Steve Cohen has hinted that he's not completely adverse to the idea. Where do you stand?Me? I hated that they went all in on these previously. It wasn't just an alt jersey, but became the batting practice jerseys and caps, the drop shadows on the snow white and road grays, and even the pinstripes. Not one, but two black caps. Jackets. They even messed with the sacred logo. It became dominant. The "City of Shadows" thing looked OK on the snow whites, but awful on the pinstripes, which, when untououched, I think are the best uniforms in baseball, if not all of sport.I kinda liked both of the caps, but we hardly ever saw the classic blue caps, again, the best in sports. The solid balck tops looked nice with the white pants, but awful with the gray pants. If they want to bring back one home jersey as a Friday night thing, that might be OK. But I fear it kicks open the door and lets in all the bad stuff. The Mets are not the Padres or Diamond Backs, teams that change their look regularly. We're blessed with a fantastic, instantly recognizable, beautiful look that has been around with limited tinkering since the team stepped on the field for the first time. When you have a blessing like that, you don't screw it up. My 2 cents.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 (edited) I care less [ab]out the subtleties of unis than most of the crowd here so I'll stop short of "abomination", but the rarer the better for me. Pick a time/occasion-- Friday night home games might be a good one -- and don't push it beyond that. That'll give it 10, maybe 12, appearances during the year which should satisfy those who like(d) em and move enough merch for the club's liking. Edited March 7, 2021 by Guest
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 I voted "abomination" but I can accept them being worn infrequently.https://i.stack.imgur.com/UkfCl.jpg>
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 If they're going to reintroduce black -- I'd prefer they didn't but can imagine they will anyway-- they need to go back to the drawing board and find a way to do it that's better executed than the 1st time thru.

Loathsome, those unis are. But I could tolerate them being rarely worn. But to me, rarely means two, maybe three times a year -- not 10 times. And for one year only. For better or worse, those hideous unis are a part of franchise history, so that's a reason to wear them, I guess. But like I said, rarely. The black unis were officially retired for the 50th anniversary 2012 season. Still, the home all black top version was worn twice in 2012. I guess ending bad habits is hard to do. They were worn on June 3, 2012, probably at John Franco's request as that was John Franco Day -- and the Mets celebrated Franco's induction into their HOF. The all-black home tops were also worn on July 21, 2012.[FIMG=555]https://www.sportsnet.ca/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/niese_jonathon640.jpg[/FIMG]They were also worn once or twice in 2013 and 2014, but right now, I can't figure out exactly when and I'm not putting in the time to get those answers. No way on a new re-design. That'd be an excuse to wear black unis 20 or 30 times a year instead of just a few times -- and for many years.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 I took sure - but-rarely - but care much less than last time around. I don't particularly like the blue jerseys either.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 I wish they wouldn't - but I'm pretty sure they will.I'm hoping that they'll limit it to no more than 12 home games and that they will have some purpose in choosing the games. They could wear them against Arizona and have a 1999 NLDS night. They could wear them a couple of time against the Braves and have a Grand Slam Single night and a Piazza post-9/11 HR night. Invite back old players and have matching promotions...John Olerud mini-helmet giveaways and the like. I'd prefer they never wear them on the road. And if they do it, I hope they only do it for this season. I'll be disappointed if they go back to randomly wearing a dozen different uniform combos for no reason.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 Now that I have a chance to check, there are 12 home Friday night games on the sked this season and 8 Saturday night home gamesSo maybe S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y ... NIGHT! is the way to go if they insist on doing so.

Would be fine with me if ThrowBlack Friday became a thing. Wouldn't bother me if we never saw them again except in highlight form.
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 I have to admit I just liked the way they looked on my Latino favorites So maybe now that they are all gone I wouldn't have the same emotional opinion

The black alternate home jersey was worn twice in 2012 and technically remained part of the team's wardrobe for the following two years despite not being worn during those seasons. It was officially retired this year [i.e., 2015].https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/13934889/uni-watch-friday-flashback-new-york-mets-bet-black-their-uniformshttps://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/13934889/uni-watch-friday-flashback-new-york-mets-bet-black-their-uniforms Edited March 7, 2021 by Guest

metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 i love the black. but i love the pinstripes and snow whites more. bring back the black, but only in moderation. but, uh, ixnay on the drop shadow and the rest the other stuff.
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 Watching these will likely be a weekly Friday/Saturday nights thing, rarer than some younguns would like, and much more frequently than some here would prefer. They wouldn't be the nicest uniform in the set, nor the second or third. But they aren't monstrosities.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted March 29, 2021 Posted March 29, 2021 Steve Cohen, in his YouTube fan q&a conducted by Wayne Randazzo, says you can look for a few black-jerseyed dates this season.

I don't think I've ever seen them referred to that way before, and I can't guess what it means? I assume one or both of the B's stands for "black".
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 Black for black's sake. It's Uni-ese used to dismiss the addition of black by teams who had no reason other than trendiness to add it.
