The Mets are getting Josh Winckowski, a 22 year-old RHP. Fangraphs said that he "has a chance to pop in 2021 because he was pitching hurt in 2019 and still got guys out. He looked rusty during instructs but was also up to 97 and added a new splitter to an already decent slider."

Sean Reid-Foley was on the 40-man for TOR and pitched for them in 2020.

Yennsy Diaz pitched for TOR in '19. So the Mets got 3 right-handed SPs providing depth at the top of the minors.

It's not salary space to my perspective, so much as roster space.



Louper was already knocking Gsellman off the roster, where he'd join the already-screwed Brad Brach hoping somebody gets hurt so he doesn't have to hit the waiver wire. Gselly had already dropped to sixth on the starting pitcher depth chart, and was looking at seventh if and when Syndergaard came back.



You need the sixth and seventh guys, but the Mets didn't have room to store extra starters in the pen, and Matz didn't have options, so now he goes for guys who who can hopefully fill out that depth chart without crowding the roster.



I hates to see trades, but I'm happy at least see them deploy a dispersal trade to help offset all the consolidation deals.

Yeah - this is a spot on the 25 freed up - a guy like Matz loses a lot of value when he doesnt have options.

Reid-Foley was pretty well regarded at one point and is still only 25? That dude alone could be as good as Matz this year. I feel like the Mets dumped salary, added some young pieces and didn't damage their depth at the major league level. Yay.

I finally joined the Lunchbucket Down on Matz! team last season. But god, was Matz good in 2015. More like an all-star. So good, that I stuck with him for all those years after. But by last season, he was just horrible and I figured to myself that all those injuries he'd been accumulating ever since his rookie year must have taken a toll, and he was physically no longer the same pitcher he was when he debuted.

He's been toast for some time. So this is OK. I doubt he's any more fixable than Matt Harvey is at this point.

My first thought was, why not get back a young centerfielder in return? But then I realized if Toronto had a decent young centerfielder they wouldn't have signed Springer. d'oh!



I think he stretched it out as far as he could go here, and maybe he'll regain that promising form somewhere else.

Lucchesi made Matz redundant, and either would have been a seat warmer for Syndergaard this year even if no other deals get made. Personally I would have non-tendered Matz, so getting three borderline prospects is a perfectly acceptable haul.
