Would have been nice if he TOLD HIS BOSSES before hand, and not have this be a shitstorm all day.

Yo painted himself as unreliable for any team looking to sign him next season. He's made his big money, but he'll be signing a pretty cheap contract next year. There are right ways to opt out, and wrong ways. Yo did it the wrong way.

He might not be able to play at the level he'd like to be performing at, maybe by a wide margin. If true, he'd know best. Maybe between that and the pandemic, he'd rather take his chances in 2021. He's already got enough money to live out his life like a king.

And he couldnt tell the Mets that BEFORE vanishing? That is all he had to do.

What difference would it have made?

Professionalism?

Show signs that you are an appropriately acting adult, and not a petulant child?

You don't know that and that's not a difference. Opting out of the baseball season is a difficult decision to make that weighs heavy.

Right.

Which is why you don't hang your team out to dry not knowing where the fuck you are, and why the fuck you didn't report to the stadium with everyone else.

You don't cause panic and worry among the media and the fan base, at least among those who care about your health and safety and won't send hate your way, or mock you relentlessly based on past behavior.

Like Namor said in the MIA thread, best case for him NOT looking like an unprofessional, immature and petulant child is if someone connected to him was tasked with providing Brodie/Rojas with the information, and there was a simple communication breakdown there.

It's also not a completely UNamateurish thing to put out a passive-aggressive, "but it's TRUE" press release just before a game.

Assuming it went EXACTLY the way that Mets management said-- and keep in mind, this is coming from the "pay no attention to the chair-throwing behind you: NO CHAIRS HAVE BEEN THROWN" set-- if BVW had gone the "personal reasons-undisclosed" route, and then let Cespedes hang himself... it might have been a lot less of a shitshow for the organization.

HAH! Good one.

And now follow up stories indicate that Ces was upset over not being in the starting lineup and that his decision to opt out over "corona virus concerns" may actually have a bunch to do with the idea that not playing

everyday will hurt his odds of reaching various performance bonus levels.

Not surprising, the whole post-game announcement thing was a farce.

Dysfunctional Wilponian spin machine.

A replay of the Irsay move in the middle of the night

Have to believe Cespedes may have been grumpy over losing playing time to Dom

For his efforts I believe Yoenis cleared roughly $800,000 for his 9 or 10 days.

He was hitting .161, with 15 Ks in 31 ABs. There are reasons to give a guy hitting .161 the day off that have nothing to do with money, especially when the guy just returned from a two-year injury holiday and is clearly not all the way back. But hey, if his attitude was getting in the way, it's addition by subtraction.

I loved watching him but F him. The Mets did everything they could to get him ready to play and inserted him in the lineup right away even though he hadn't played in two years, didn't play in the March games, and only played in 2 exhibition games. He wasn't laying off any fastballs and couldn't hit a curve but he thought that he should be playing every day and might have been upset that he wouldn't reach his "incentives" because he wasn't playing every day. Good riddance. If the last 50 games are as bad as the 1st 10 at least we can now learn whether JD and Dom are good enough for full-time roles in '21.

Ces' First Mets Game: August 1, 2015

Ces' Last Mets Game: August 1, 2020

He missed a couple in between.
