Braves up 6-0 over the Twins after three.

The only other day game concerning the Mets is the Nats at the Giants, which starts at 3:45 EST. There's no bad outcome for that one, but a Giants win is certainly preferable.

Cardinals @ Dodgers -- 3:10 EDT today, noon local time -- is also a game concerning us.

Dodgers aren't getting caught by anyone, but the Redbirds are in the midst of things mucking up the WC works.

Yeah, that one too.

The Dodgers are starting somebody named "Dustin May." I have no idea who that is, but I was always taught that dust in May meant it would be a hard year for the crops.

That's gold, Jerry

Can't take credit for that one. It is good, though.

That's St. Louis' fifth loss in a row, dropping them, the Mets, and the Brewers into a three-way virtual tie, only one game behind Philadelphia for the second Wild Card spot.

The Mets have the better run differential than those three other teams.

Tonight's rooting interests:

  • Pirates over the Brewers (this is a tough one, as the Bucs are already down 5-0 and haven't gotten a hit through the first two innings.

  • D-Backs over Phillies (rooting for Vargas to get blown over like a card castle under a fan)

  • Orioles over the Yankees (just because)

The Brewers beat the Bucs 8-3, so they keep pace with the Mets, but if Arizona, currently up 4-0 over Philadelphia, finishes the job, the Mets will be within a half game of the Phils, and that would mean within a half game of both the Phillies and the Brewers — in other words, within a half game of that second Wild Card slot.

As much as I'm enjoying the raucous LFGM crowds of the last few days, the online exchanges I've had suggest that Phillies fans currently hate their team (the bullpen drives them nuts, and Gabe Kapler, whose firing they frequently demand in the middle of a game, is out of his depth), as do the Nationals fans (the bullpen drives them nuts and the team let Bryce Harper walk this past winter and might well let Anthony Rendon walk this next winter).

Braves fans don't hate their team, but it's never exactly been a mad love affair down there either. Folks are just there to do the chop thing.

I just love the fact that this NYM run has made me care about the out of town scoreboard.

It's much tougher to care when you hate the sport as much as many of us did a few months ago.

Phillies lose, dropping them into a second-place NLWC2 tie with the Mets and Cardinals, a half-game behind the Brewers. D'Backs are 1 1/2 back, Giants 3, Reds 4 1/2.

In the NL East, Brave loss to Marlins lifts us to within 8 of first place.

Friday's games of parochial interest...

Nats @ Mets 7:10

Braves @ Marlins 7:10

Cubs @ Reds 7:10

Rangers @ Brewers 8:10

Pirates @ Cardinals 8:15

D'Backs @ Dodgers 10:10

Phillies @ Giants 10:15

btw, Another thing not to overlook while watching the O-o-T-S is that the Braves have now lost two-of-three to the Marlins, and that even when they're winning the back end of their games

are no prettier than ours were earlier in the season or that Washington's have been all year.

- tonight, in a game that was 0-0 thru 7, the Braves went up 3-0 and then 6-2 before coughing up four in the bottom of the 9th then lost via a walk-off/Sac-Fly in the 10th

- earlier this week in Minnesota, they gave up 2 in the 9th to lose on Monday

- on Tuesday they led the Twinkies 11-0 in the 6th, then held on to win 12-7

- on Wednesday it was 7-0 Braves in the 6th, but eventually a much tighter 11-7 win

And this, like the Nats, is all AFTER they fixed their pen at the deadline. Recent imports Mark Melancon, Shane Greene, and (incumbent) Sean Newcombe were tonight's goats in the Atlanta pen.

So, among all the other good stuff this week, we've picked up 1.5 games on 1st place NLE just since Thursday

Oh yeah, and the Astros are up 20-2 in the 8th inning at Camden Yards. Or, as Baltimore fans would call it: Saturday.

And the Yanx lost today making that two of three to the Blue Jays

Braves hang on for the four-game split with Miami

But it still wasn't easy. Game ended 5-4 Braves with Marlin runners on 1st & 3rd in bottom 9

I think it was mentioned in another thread, but your special guest best friend tonight was Pittsburgh, beating the Nats 4-1, by (you guessed it) burning down their bullpen.

Most everybody else currently jockeying with your heroes won and stayed even, but I guess there's no harm in celebrating the Cards' win over Milwaukee, putting the Brewboys a game and a half behind the Mets.

Wait a minute. Yes there is. Rooting for the Cards just feels gross.

Cubs up 12-11 on the barely-still-in-it Giants (thanks for the secondbaseman) in the eighth inning. Pitchers' battle.

Milwaukee and the Cards in a delay with the Brewers holding a 5-3 lead. There's probably no bad outcome to that one.

Washington Krush Grooved the Pirates 11-1.

Phillies completed their sweep of Boston with a 5-3 win at Fenway

Atlanta finished off the Marlins 5-0.

So, really, nothing came up particularly Millhouse today apart from another exciting Mets win (despite losing the starter after four), and whatever outcome happens in the beertown battle. Also, Hunter Strickland failed to negotiate a bench press and knocked himself silly while breaking his nose. Reports suggest he won't miss much, if any, time, but this is the second busted schnozz for the Nationals' rotation this season.

My daughter and I went the Red Sox/Royals game on August 7 before a torrential downpour forced us to leave in the 10th inning. Today, with neither of us present, the game was completed in 12 minutes.

Phillies, Cubs, and Braves all win. Arizona up 8--0 on San Diego.

Looks like the only rival the Mets can hope to gain on today is Milwaukee.

Of course, they sure gained a game on Washington.
