="Frayed Knot"]I think it was the WFL (World Football League - one of the NFL wannabe competitors) who decided they'd be unique and go with (mostly) singular names. That's right! I distinctly remember a team in the WFL called the 'Sun'. I think it was the California Sun. ON EDIT: The Southern California Sun

The Magic Kingdom is in Orlando. I can live with a team moving locales and keeping their name. But if the original name is based upon their original locale then why wouldn't they change it? Philadelphia/Kansas City/Oakland Athletics is fine. Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams - no problemo. Utah Jazz makes no sense nor does Los Angeles Dodgers or Lakers or Arizona Cardinals. Salt Lake is known for it's jazz clubs and all the well known jazz musicians that originated from that area? Really? Many trolleys to dodge or lakes to canoe in L.A.? Bright red cardinals are indigenous to arid desert climates? Who knew?

I was rooting for Miami Marlins and Denver Bears when the Marlins and the Rockies came to be. How much cooler is Denver Bears than Colorado Rockies? So much.

  8. No, no, no, no, no, no. Sometimes you just gotta take a stand dammit.
  9. What am I - a rookie? Had one dude.
  10. Oh - I got an Elster memory! Some game in the 90's Elster won with a walk-off homerun. The vendors who were always outside the stadium hawking their counterfeit merchandise were out again and enjoying the purchasing power of the happy crowd. One vendor understood the mood better than the rest and instead of just trying to sell 'Mets hats' he was shouting 'Elstah hats! Get your game-winnin' Elstah hats!'
  11. I go back to days of Lee Mazzilli and Bucky Dent fighting for the hearts of the junior high/high school chicks.
  12. I'm happy to burn and mail. PM me your address and I'll churn it out for ya.
  13. It was a giveaway. I have one. It's been on my iPod for quite some now. The best is when I'm on shuffle and a Bob Murphy call pops up out of nowhere.
  14. ="GYC"]Can someone re-cap the bottom of the 9th? I was watching 24 and trying to follow game at the same time. It didn't work. Guilty as charged. Although the only at-bat I missed was LoDuca's.
  15. I wanted him pitched to the whole series. I hate him - challenge the cheater!
  16. I caught the cocina/cucina comment. Thought it was alternate pronounciation.

That lends a sort of unpleasant tendentious air to the booth. For the same reasons, I don't think he would be a great coach or teacher. There's something very not entertaining about him.... I don't agree with this at all. In fact I think almost the exact opposite.
  18. I like Keith's candid ex-player's approach. Whether I agree with what he's saying or not he tells me how the players might be feeling at that moment. A player involved in a 7-2 game in the ninth is thinking what Keth is saying. His misogynistic approach is more than likely what the vast majority of players have. Again I may not agree with it or like it but I do appreciate the insight.
  19. Greg: All literary men are Red Sox fans, said John Cheever (whoever he played for). John Cheever? Why should we care what he thought? He was that gay guy who had the affair with Susan's dad. Not that there's anything wrong with that of course.
  20. Naked Kelly McGillis.

    Agreed. No thank you.

  24. I just read through this thread and am surprised that no one caught another of Mex's comments that I found interesting. He and Gary were talking about the 14 inning affair from the night before and of course the 16 innining playoff game against Houston came up. Keith said that that game was so tense and stressful that he went through a full 2 & 1/2 packs of cigarettes over the course of the game. 2 & 1/2 packs! When Gary expressed surprise that he was able to continue playing while inhaling all of that crap. Keuith said that when he woke up the next morning he could barely breathe. Side note: According to Keith he hasn't had a cancer stick in 11 years.
  25. Yancy Street Gang wrote: I think that we, the Mets front office, the manager, the coaches, and the fans, have to put Scott Kazmir aside and evaluate Victor Zambrano for who he is, and not through the spectrum of how he got here. This was never an issue with me. Good trade, bad trade doesn't matter. What's done is done and you can't change it. Besides the fact that the jury is still way out on this trade. Kazmir looks like a nice young pitcher but I don't think the HOF should start commissioning his plaque just yet. If the Mets are pitching Zambrano simply to justify a bad trade by a GM that isn't here anymore that's pretty silly and I'd like to believe that the decision-makers here are a bit more intelligent than that. It's not like Kazmir was Tom Seaver and the fans are up in arms about it either. Zambrano pitched well for Tampa Bay no? He was a solid starter for them and he's even had his moments here. It's still April, I'm not tossing this guy on the woodplie just yet. Give him a few more starts. Whenever I see a pitcher starting slow I think of John Tudor in 1985. He opened the season 1-7. He went 20-1 the rest of the way and finished second in the Cy Young to some bad seed flash-in-the-pan whose name escapes me.
