  1. By 2000, you needed 700 hits - that's five good full-time seasons - so yeah, it makes sense that most recent guys wouldn't make the cut.
  2. It was fun to watch Fonzie come out of nowhere and start zooming up there. I'm still upset he didn't get on the Hall ballot.
  3. Wins the first of a record eight consecutive NL MVP awards, thanks to a 48-HR season.
  4. Altobelli *is* Rochester baseball. Terribly sad, although he'd been very sick for a while.
  5. A ball, maybe a little AA. Gets traded in July for a shitty middle reliever who winds up with an ERA over 8, and then he wins the 2023 ROY Award with his new team.
  6. They're talking franchise history, which is why they say things like Montreal/Washington, too. You're really overthinking this, 62.
  7. Edgy MD wrote: The big downside — and I'd ask Sandy about his plan for this if I was in on a press conference — is how they're going to manage debuting twice as many first-year pros this season with 25% fewer slots to fill. There were only five rounds in the draft last year, so the influx might not be as large.
  8. I am honestly surprised he never made it up to the bigs, even for just a cameo.
  9. I'm going to go with Jordan Yamamoto. Ooh, lordy, he was terrible in four appearances last year, but hey, you take out the game where he gave up thirteen runs, his ERA was only 11.42. (!) He's young, strikes guys out, and I don't think anyone's expecting much of anything from him this year. But he'll be needed, and he'll get 12-15 starts over the summer and surprise all of us.
  10. Frayed Knot wrote: Jared Hughes is 6' 7", racked up ten years in the big leagues, all of it in the NL including his final run as a NYM, and I yet I somehow managed to have ZERO memory of him as a baseball player much less as a Met This, exactly. He pitched in nearly a third of our games and I don't remember a single appearance?
  11. The fuck?!
  12. Oh, I forgot about the automatic intentional walk. I'm sort of okay with that; it's minimal impact, really, but I guess I'd put it between the DH and the seven-inning games.
  13. Players have to be designated "hitter" or "pitcher" now (with the exception of two-way guys like Ohtani and the guy from the Reds), and "hitters" can only pitch in extra innings if there's nobody left. Totally dumb.
  14. As many of you know, I have a collection of Mets autographs -- over 1,000 of the 1,111 Mets and counting, plus another sixty or so field-adjacent folks like managers and whatnot. I've been mailing cards to players since I was a kid; many get lost along the way, but I've gotten dozens of responses over the years. Usually they just sign and return the card, I stick it in my binder, and check them off my list. I figured almost-Met Wilbur Huckle would be a fun guy to add to the collection; his address was in the database I use, so I created a simple custom card, wrote a little note, and sent it off a few months ago. You never know with the older guys, because, well, you just never know. Huckle is 83, according to the internet. So I was *very* pleasantly surprised to get a SASE in my mailbox yesterday with a neatly-written "Wilbur Huckle" return address in the corner. But when I opened the envelope, not only was my card signed and returned, but he had hand-written an AWESOME letter in return! His letter assumed I was a kid, which says something about the hobby, my handwriting, or both, but it absolutely made my day nonetheless.
  15. Rules That Are Stupid, Ranked: 1) Three-batter minimum 1a) (outlawing defensive shifts would go here if they try it) 2) Extra Inning Secret Bonus Runner 3) Fucking up the minor leagues 4) Not allowing position players to pitch 5) The DH 6) Seven-inning doubleheaders
  16. I was at that 2008 game too. Got there right when the gates opened, walked the whole ballpark, soaking in every second I could. May or may not have cried more than once that night.
  17. I know this isn't a prediction thread yet, but he's going to make us yearn for the halcyon days of Omar Quintanilla. And much like Quintanilla, if he gets any significant time at all, something has gone horribly wrong.
  18. Without looking, I think his ERA was over 9 in like four innings. One of those "worth a flier" guys who wasn't actually worth a flier after all.
  19. =RealityChuck post_id=55514 time=1612555594 user_id=82] Probably best he signed elsewhere. Now they can talk about extending Conforto and Syndergaard.
  20. I care about this literally zero percent. Didn't care before he signed, don't care now. We'll see him in the NLCS, I suppose?
  21. Sutton is one of those guys like Fergie Jenkins, Yaz, Rusty, and heck, even Koosman and Seaver that I first remember being *really old* when I discovered baseball in the early 80s, and only after some time realized how good they really were.
  22. "And as far as we know, has never sent a photo of his penis to anyone. At least we fucking hope not."
  23. Hey, there you go. Well done, Mets. Also, brb getting my resume together quickly
