  1. Definitely Professor Jose Reyes. Although it's tempting to choose unlisted option 8, "Cruise Bars Picking Up Underage Women with Paul LoDuca."

Wilkerson reminds me of Rich Becker. I didn't like Rich Becker. Checking out B-R.com, Wilkerson basically is Becker, but with twice the power. Wilkerson struck out 116 times in 320 ABs in '06. Yowza.
  3. Too bad. Vern was a good dude; I met him once when he visited my baseball camp. RIP, Vern.
  4. I was about as old then as MiniWolf is now. So obviously it didn't register at the time. The big crushing trades of my childhood are dealing Kevin McReynolds to the Royals and Lenny Dykstra to the Phillies. Tom Seaver was (is?) definitely a washed-up old guy to me, pitching for the White Sox. That said, if the Mets traded Mr. Met right now, MiniWolf would probably be pissed.
  5. I'd vote against interleague play also, but I am interested in seeing the Twins and A's come to Shea... so I guess that's the Catch-22. I'd rather have a balanced schedule for the integrity of the playoffs, though.
  6. My first guess is Kenji Johjima, because I know he hasn't walked a lot this year, but I don't see how he fits the discussion.
  7. Why the F isn't there an effing draft tracker that will allow you to search by school? Why should I have to effing subscribe to Baseball America to search an effing list? Effing morons.
  8. Yep. #193 in last year's Update set. If the Mets win that game, then it probably gets its own card, but...
  9. That's the back of the 2007 Topps Co-Signers Matsuzaka card. And yes, that says "Drafted: Mets #1 - June 2000". Suck it, Billy Traber.
  10. Retro sets are all the rage. Topps is doing another Allen & Ginter set, and Upper Deck is doing a new 1933 Goudey set. In keeping with the A&G tradition of adding non-baseball notable figures to their set (the '06 set featured people like Jennie Finch, Hulk Hogan, and the Japanese hot-dog eating guy), the '07 set features Ken Jennings, among others. And in other news, Topps Series 2 is out, featuring a Dice-K card variation with the front entirely in Japanese: edit: Oh, and this might be my new favorite baseball card ever. The 2007 Bowman Jose Reyes:
  11. Awesome! I threw out a first pitch once back in my radio days at a Rochester Red Wings game... I still remember it like it was yesterday. I still have the ball. (Minor trivia: the guy who caught my first pitch was one-game Met Kenny Greer.)
  12. Nah, that Kevin Brown is the only Met Kevin Brown. The pitcher was drafted by Texas and spent his whole time in their system before going to the O's in 1995.
  13. It's a discussion that doesn't belong in this thread, but Cliff Floyd is worthless as a pinch-hitter; Gary Cohen said during the Cubs series that Cliff even admits that. No thanks.
  14. That guy's clearly an ass, and if I was the GM, I'd fire him before he reached the clubhouse.
  15. Tonight's Lineup: SS Reyes C LoDuca CF HoJo 1B Delgado 3B Franco 2B Randolph LF Gomez RF Jerry Manuel P Darling
  16. We might have at least one guy get some draft love this year. RHP Gary Novakowski was named the America East Pitcher of the Year.
  17. Neat clip of Bonds hitting career home run #2 off Ron Darling.
  18. No, it's "runs like Sparky, hits like Luis."
  19. I don't know that Armando's the biggest choker ever, nor the worst closer ever. It's just that you seem to remember his games more, for whatever the reason. (Jeffery Maier.) And my comment about his over-excitability doesn't distinguish him from all other closers, but a lot of them, including guys like Mariano Rivera. Not saying it's fair to compare him to Mariano, but Mo is unflappable, completely emotionless on the mound, whereas Armando is stomping around with what my wife called his "angry bull face" the other night. That's going to make his foibles more prominent.
  20. Isn't that part of the dilemma of the modern closer, though? You fail four times over the course of a six-month season, and that's all that's remembered. Armando played in a big market, with some big blowups in big games... so those are going to be remembered. Some of us remember Wagner blowing up in Houston and Philly, but most folks didn't see those games, because they weren't always against the Mets. Part of Benitez' problem was what you saw the other night... he gets over-emotional. Things started to not go his way, and it always seemed like whenever that happened, he got too amped up and tried to throw 120 MPH. Problem is, he starts leaving balls flat out over the plate. Sometimes they get hit 500 feet, like Delgado did; sometimes guys swing through them; and sometimes guys get under them and hit weak fly balls. Those go in the "save" column, and they're largely forgotten. Most of the time, that's how it happens, which is why he saves 40 games a year. The blowups are just magnified.
  21. What a bunch of classy guys. ]Rodriguez brushed aside the Blue Jays' anger, saying the Yankees were "desperate" for a win. "Honestly, I couldn't care less," he said. "They have their opinions. We're looking not to be swept." The Yankees didn't quite know what to think. "I wasn't sure that was allowed," outfielder Johnny Damon said. "If it is, maybe we'll keep on doing it."
  22. Kinda wish anyone would do something good tonight. This has been a pretty bleh game. (As evidenced by all the IGT excitement.)
  23. There's a tilde over the N in Nieto?
  24. Not only did I think "we can get him," I could actually visualize the loss. I woke my wife up and told her Carlos Delgado was about to hit the ball 600 feet. I definitely remember 2004 -- dude made us look BAD. But he's still Armando.
