  1. The great thing about Hillenbrand is that he has a reputation as a strong clubhouse guy. He's not the type of guy who would act like a douche because he's not in the lineup, or who would refuse to sit in the dugout, or write stupid shit on the clubhouse billboard or anything. And it's not like any of his former managers have tried to physically kick his ass or anything. Oh wait, yes he is all those things. Now that's a True Yankee™!
  2. I think it's nearly impossible to grade a GM "fairly," because there are just too many factors at play. Is Brian Cashman a good GM? Well, he -- and Omar -- certainly have the money to be able to be a good GM. And you'd have to factor in FA signings, because they're part of the GM-as-talent-evaluator puzzle. But Omar's not on the same theoretical playing field that a Dave Littlefield or a Dayton Moore. Those guys have to he much more careful in their evaluations, from the draft on up, because of the financial picture. Plus you have to somehow factor in replacement costs and the consequences of signings and deals. Where does letting Steve Trachsel go fit in? Well, to answer that, it's not just about Trax, but who replaced him. I guess it's too open a debate to quantify for me.

  4. Tonight at Shea. Interesting story; he was coaching in the Angels' system until earlier this year, then asked to be released from his contract so he could work towards a playing gig again. A few weeks later, the Cardinals signed him, and now here he is. Let's touch him up for some welcome back runs tonight, eh?
  5. Yeah, Dye's hurt. I'd like to see another bat too, but I don't know how they'll get anyone else to fit. Unless Alou is done done, then where do you stick him and Green if you add a healthy Jermaine Dye? I don't know that either one gives you anything off the bench, and neither one is likely to be dealt or cut. Maybe we can resurrect Ryne Sandberg and stick him at second base and get some extra offense that way.
  6. Who?
  7. The whole living-in-an-RV-drinkin'-beers-with-fans-after-the-game thing in '03 was just bizarre, but really endearing. Hurry up and get your Rod Beck baseball cards on eBay so you can cash in!
  8. iramets wrote: People ask why someone would hate Yankee fans so much, and this is my answer: because they boast of every fucking thing the Yankees have ever accomplished, whether or not anyone else has accomplished it, and whether or not it’s an extraordinary achievement, or even worth accomplishing. They’re the pinnacle of boasting—to be a Yankee fan, you must suffer from a terminal case of pride, which prevents you from viewing yourself as equal to—or even belonging to the same race as—every fucking other person on the face of the earth. Yes, yes, yes. Well put, Ira. FWIW, I wouldn't be surprised if there's another team that can claim more than six managers.

  10. Okay, fellas. Duque pitched his balls off today. Get him a freaking W.
  11. Come on. That really wasn't all that egregious by LoDuca. Silly, yes, but suspendable? Doubt it.
  12. Shit is goin' DOWN. LoDuca gets tossed after arguing a Strike 2 (with runners on 1st and 2nd). He then goes apeshit, tossing equipment all over the place. Castro replaces him at the plate and K's; then Beltran singles to left, but Ricky Ledee joins the list of Mets who have gotten thrown out at the plate. If only he was just a liiiitle bit faster. Still scoreless through 6.
  13. Joe Kennedy still not pitching; 0-0 in the top of the fifth with one out after Joe Blanton sacrifices the potential first run of the game to second. Blue hats, baby.
  14. What a cool experience! Nice photos.
  15. How great would it be to have a reliever who spoke in Cockney slang! I'd pay extra just to have the mound conversations between Willie, LoDuca, and the infielders miked.
  16. And Milton Bradley is now a Royal, so I s'pose this is all for nothing.
  17. Jeff Pearlman travels to Central Islip in search of John Rocker, finds he's two seasons late, but interviews some players anyway. We're headed to the game tomorrow night if we can find a babysitter.
  18. I have a lot of vacation time saved up, so I could definitely manage the rest of the year if the O's needed me.
  19. metirish wrote: His wiki page needs updating. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milton_Bradley Considering that page says he died in 1911, I don't think he's a fit for the Mets right now. Sure, he's still younger than Julio Franco, but I don't see how he helps us otherwise.
  20. I tell you, Steve's secretly a Braves fan. No, I'm perfectly happy in first place, thank you. Think the Yankees wouldn't rather be in first place? Think the Braves are happy they're a few games out, because it keeps them hungry? Hell NO. As long as it reads "GB: --" next to "New York" in the NL East standings, I'm a happy man.
  21. Might as well add this metsblog post to the thread for posterity. ]Carlos Delgado, on the relentless announcements, while talking to reporters after the game… “(Hahaha) I did it online, during the fifth inning. Well, they’re asking for five times, during the game, so if everyone voted five times today he was going to overcome Martin, so I did it five times in the fifth inning.” Lo Duca, on whether he noticed the solicitation, and whether he voted for himself, when talking to reporters after the win… “No I did not, and how could you not notice it. It was a little overboard (hahaha). Umm, it was fine, it’s pretty fun. I had a couple of the Twins hitters come up and say they voted for me before they came up at-bat, so, it was pretty funny.”
  22. Not a fan of what we on the baseball card boards call "band-aid" or "sticker" autographs, but at least Endy's got his own card. Selling for decent dollars on eBay, which is too bad, because it would be nice to own. I got outbid on an autographed 8x10 photo of "The Catch" at a silent auction a few weeks back. I'm such a cheap bastard.
  23. Okay, I voted, and I'm in the majority, apparently. Somewhat difficult to lump announcers from other sports all together in a poll like this, but whatever.
  24. Are we in the same league as the Yankees?!? When did this happen!?!
  25. Baseball's Unbreakable Records, as per ESPN. ]Most Times Caught in the Act in the Bullpen: 1 Record-holder: David Cone, Mets Chance of being broken: .000003 percent Umm …
