    If I told you "Pete Alonso is going to hit his 300th home run as a game-tying homer in the ninth at Citi Field and the place is going to go bananas" exactly a year ago, you'd probably be like "yeah, that sounds logical."

    I've wondered about Topps' checklist choices for a while now. Williams was in Chrome, so I'm not surprised to see him here, but so was Weaver and they somehow left him off. Raley was in 2023 Update but hasn't shown up anywhere since. Seems likely that they locked in the checklist in early May, which means it would catch Ibanez but not Ewing. Ewing will definitely be in 2027 S1. Thornton probably too. With that logic, though, I'm surprised Kimbrel isn't in here. Tong is something of a surprise, because he was in S1. But yeah. Topps makes weird checklist decisions.

    It is *infuriating* that the Red Wings have had the best record in the league over the full season - by 9 full games as of this morning - but is still in a dogfight for the postseason because of the first half/second half thing. Three more against Scranton this weekend (took two of the first three), then six against 31-33 Buffalo next week.

    So I clicked through the rest of the season on https://playoffpredictors.com/, and there DOES exist a scenario where we're as high as the four seed. Does it require a LOT of things to go right, including us going 18-0, the AL winning every interleague game (except ours), and the Phillies finishing their season 0-18, among other improbable things? Well, of course. But ya gotta believe and all that.

    Okay, I'm trying to figure out what the projections mean. Andres Gimenez was the starting shortstop for most of the shortened 2020 season, which means if they HAD played a full 162, he'd be on this list?

    Ron Swoboda? 1965, and in the 21 spot. Let's see if we can get some bonus points.

    The "Projected" thing is throwing me, because unless FanGraphs thinks Nick Morabito is going to go on an inhuman tear or something over the next few weeks, there are no other Mets rookies this season projected to do anything that would make them appear on this list.

    I hate that they restricted callups to only two. I loved seeing all of these guys get rewarded for good seasons.

    I think Chisholm is kind of "redass," as the old baseball books liked to say, but I just can't get upset over these "unwritten rules" sometimes. Are the Red Sox going to just stop playing and give up? No? Then fuck that. You play to win the game.

    I really thought it was a solid pickup. Had the big first two games, looking like he'd finally turned the corner. Oh well. Ultimately, he'd lost any semblance of regular playing time between Soto, Ewing, and Benge, so it kind of is what it is. Welcome back, Nick Morabito.

    Five batters from Kevin Herget, four for Saul Garcia (including a walk), three perfect innings from Tobias Myers, and an inning each for McDermott (with a walk), Joe Jacques, and Zack Franklin. Plus a 4-for-5 day for Vientos with three dingers, who has five in 23 rehab ABs, and a bonus homer for Melendez. I guess you have to call some of these guys up at this point. Why is Robert Stock still on this team?

    That is why baseball is forever the greatest game, and also why you NEVER LEAVE A GAME EARLY. No matter what happens, the winning team has to get all 27 outs. No shortcuts, no running out the clock, no fouling. One pitch at a time.

    And Bichette is only 28; signed theoretically through 30. I'd say a year or two on the end is a pretty safe bet for the Mets.

    Look, New York is a hard place to play. Lots of guys struggle. The spotlight is huge. I'm glad to see he's coming around and although like the rest of you, I'd be very surprised if he didn't opt out, I'd love to be able to ink him into the lineup for 2027, at least.
