  4. the trick is, the one team you're not going to be able to trade posey to is probably the marlins, because salary.
  5. there's no pitching asset comparable to harvey. in the fangraphs piece referenced somewhere above that lists stanton as #8 and harvey as #7, the following players are listed ahead of him, and it's really hard to quibble much with any of them: #6 posey (power hitting catcher signed long term, albeit at high salary - this is the one most quibblable) #5 longoria (excellent all around thirdbaseman signed long term to fairly reasonable salary, all things considered) #4 mccutchen (the pirates will pay him an average of only $12M for each of the next five years) #3 manny machado (he's only 20, this is hist first full year, and he's a super 3b) #2 harper (i don't think i need to explain this one) #1 trout (duh) none of htese players are getting traded for giancarlo stanton. matt harvey isn't either. a team could put together a package that, together, could be worth more than harvey, but one player alone isn't doing the trick.
  6. i got 44. whiffed on one or three that i should maybe have known. fringey guys, sure, but they were kinda on the tip of my tongue. the remainder, nope. not at all.
  7. 3 is bonds, right? for 8, i'll go kingman
  8. i keep on catching only the latter half of RED as it airs on, what, f/x, and i rather enjoy it, for what it is. it ain't high cinema, but it's a solid five. i imagine RED 2 will be much of hte same. maybe one day i'll catch its latter half while skipping around the late night channels in a few years..
  9. oh crap, i have so much catching up to do!
  10. given strictly the choice of having byrd or young on the team next year, i would pick byrd - he's the better player, and more likely to be the better player next year, and more likely to be a contributor to a good team. however, the choice is not made in a vacuum. because if hte mets do not have either byrd or young next year, one can only assume the reason is that they were either traded away or not re-signed. and if the mets trade away young, they get virtually nothing back - i'm sure of this. the mets could always just let byrd walk away i suppose, but i think the more likely outcome is a trade - in which case i feel the mets could get some value back - potentially more long term value then tehy would receive from retaining marlon byrd for another go-around. and so, that's why i chose young. i'd rather see the mets keep young and trade byrd for something, than keep byrd and trade young for nothing.
  11. the thing fenway does right is, though they've allowed advertising to cover and hover over the green monster, they've maintained strict control over the color palate of those ads (monster green and white on & above the wall, scoreboard green & white on the scoreboard), and also have forced them to be uniform in size and shape, helping them to be fairly unobtrusive. yeah, you still know they're there, but they don't get in the way. but the park is not immune to the incursion of advertisements over every available space. feast your eyes.

  13. rereading hte original quote, i think we're reading too much into it. all he's really saying, i think, is that he wants to date beautiful women and not be hounded by tabloids in the process. is that so douchey? the insinuations that the hot model he's currently dating isn't clearly enough and that he wants to string together an unending parade of hot young tail are being made outside of his words, clearly pulling just enough on the jeter thread to make for some fun hyperbole.
  14. heavens to mergatroid! a successful famous good looking young man wants to have a string of relationships with beautiful famous women! avert ye eyes! we don't want our athletes to be good looking, religious, and chaste like time tebow we don't want our athletes to be good looking, and have a swingin' bachelorriffic time like jeter what the fuck do we want of our young athletes? to be ugly and married?
  15. Really thinking about Beltran, his HOF cap logo should be this: is the B for Blame?
  16. all i'll say about beltran is, the man goes out there, breaks another mans face with his own face, forcing that other man to miss hte remainder of a season, and all he misses is like two days? and that man is accused of not trying, of not caring? fuck that.
  17. i'm okay with not retiring any more numbers for a few more years. it would be cool and all, i suppose, but unnecessary. i do wonder, though... are the mets now not allowed to have any players or coaches named shea? what if chipper's boy turns out to be a really good player?
  18. why, the citrus intolerant, of course. no, really, it's a thing.
  19. vietnam veterans night opponent: dodgers sigfried and roy appreciation night opponent: tigers barefoot runners' day opponent: white sox rain date opponent: red sox atheists and agnostics night opponent: padres rain date opponent: cardinals ninja night opponent: pirates it must be really hard to put together a promotional schedule...

(That's the IMDB description. Here's mine) 131 minutes of unwatchable images and unbearable noise. That my 17-year old and his buddies are DYING to see. That's your target audience, right there. When I was 17 I would have felt exactly the same. There may be more to it than the usual boom-wisecrack-boom-- Guillermo Del Toro (of Hellboy/Pan's Labyrinth/Devil's Backbone renown) is behind the lens. there's just gotta be more to it. i mean there's just gotta. it just seems so.. lacking. i mean, giant punchy robots driven by a pair of guys in some sort of mind meld is cool, i suppose, but is that really enough to carry a movie?
  21. fucking wilpons trying to squeeze every last dime out of a situation, wringing more and more innings out of their players, but do they pay them any extra- no! what do they think, that the fans are just going to bow down and genuflect and sing hosannahs and kiss fred's ring over a lousy 60 extra innings? no - its still the same fucking players! are those 60 extra innings going to somehow teach lucas duda how to field a ball, or one of our outfielders to fucking hit worth a damn? hell no! they think they're so smart, but mets fans only need to look up at the ugly, cluttered, misshapen scoreboard to understand what this is truly about. greed, trift, and incompetence. plain and simple. 8.75 x 86 = 752.5 innings 814 - 852.5 = 61.5 innings of extra baseball 8.75 innings is derived from the assumption that the home team wins 50% of the time, and an even split of home and road games. home win or road loss = 8.5 innings of baseball (the additional partial innings accrued by 9th inning walkoffs are not considered here). road win or home loss = 9 innings of baseball. averages out to 8.75 innings per game. if we assume a game that enters the ninth to be a full nine inning game instead of the more accdurate 8.5 innings for a home win and 9 innings for a home loss, then the mets have played only 40 additional innings this season.

The Native Americans have always been fair game. i'd be utterly shocked if those were NOT the names of teams participating in adult kickball leagues.
  23. the mets were in a no-win situation on this. think how clueless they would have looked had the event gone on as planned/anticipated, and a bunch of bad publicity came the braves' way courtesy of the #lolmets scheduling an american indian festival when their caricature is in town, inviting controversy and politicizing. i don't think raining a shitstorm, no matter how large or small, upon a visiting fellow mlb franchise is the proper place for a business such as an mlb team. the biggest critique, really, is that the mets didn't alight to the impending situation sooner, if not immediately. but i think they eventually followed the corporate playbook well enough.
  24. sooner or later, everything comes around to [vic sage's] ass. do you really want that?
  25. crap, after a five day weekend, i've got me some catching up to do!
