  1. nah, they shoulda gone $80M/year, just to get bauer.
  2. wowzers. that shields trade. yikes. i mean, they were still in the playoff race at that point, but with a ~30% chance at making the playoffs. they were already in the middle of a fade having dropped out of first place a month earlier, i think. but then started fading and kept fading HARD after the trade. probably a deal they'd like to have back. in our own hindsight, yeah, maybe trading noah for tatis woulda been ok to do. my kid would've been sad, though. and we probably wouldn't have just gotten lindor, so there's that. i'm just glad we didn't send syndy to the yanks. back to tatis. yah, this is an incredibly early extension for a very young player with so little track record and for an really long time. but holy cow does this look like a thing that'll work out well for both parties. i hope to hell it's a ridiculous steal for the padres, because that'll mean that they've got a massive supernova of a star on their hands. good for them. and for tatis, too!
  3. wanted to go with yamamoto, too... instead, i'll pick.... uh. jacob barnes. because why not. high strikeouts, had a low FIP last year. needs to keep the walks and homers down. and i think its easier to crack into the 'pen than the rotation, and i don't want to root for a dark horse to emerge in the rotation because that means we'll need a dark horse to emerge in the rotation.
  4. he's a famous sports guy who ran into another famous sports guy, presumably in a famous sports setting. whatevs.
  5. wow. BP's really not feeling the hotlanta love, are they? 82.4 wins in 4th place, (presumably) even after the ozuna signing. yikes!
  6. i think it would be a worse decision if they'd renamed it "plantation's pride" or "mammy's milk", rather than the bland unremarkableness they settled upon. also, pearl milling company is the orignial name for the company that started making the darned stuff. so it kinda works. they'll have to do a heck of a job marketing their historical connection, to be sure, but they certainly could have done worse.
  7. damn, i'm really not sure if i have any photos of shea. i'll have to go hunting later.
  8. well. fuck him, then.
  9. there's so much insecurity, and coping, and overcompensating. he could really benefit from a non-dudebro mentor, though i don't know where those exist in the sports world. i just browsed through an SI puff piece on the dude, and, like, i can feel for how he got where he is, and how he is the way he is. he'd always been told how not to do things, and pushed through and did it his own way. so there's certainly some built-in resistance to doing the pr thing, or the social interaction thing, "the right way". it's what gives me hope that he's not necessarily a bad dude, just a different dude gone astray.
  10. man, i'm conflicted about the dude. i mean on a personal level. i think so much of him is just a social awkwardness and forced contrarianism that comes across as a massive asshole. and maybe he really is a narcissistic asshole, who isn't nearly aware enough of other people. i don't know that he's necessarily clubhouse poison, unless a team demands he fit into a mold he clearly doesn't fit. and i surely don't think he rises to the level of terribleness that mickey and porter have reached. he also doesn't like calloway, or especially gerrit cole, so there's that. it could all fall apart, and he could be an intolerable asshole, i suppose. but there are certainly worse people in baseball available, which is faint praise to be sure.
  11. also, if you're a sports journalist, you likely work with some sort of investigative journalist in your organization, who might look to break a story wide open.
  12. it sure sounds like he knows who those potential big names are. maybe he should start using their names.
  13. i remember he had a penchant for spinning random objects on his finger.... not really anything else, though.
  14. i really wish the voters would elect a guy based primarily on his character, to show that it really is a meaningful criteria, and not simply a convenient escape clause.
  15. man, it's too bad he's such an a-hole, because the player really oughtta be in already. I was poking around on fangraphs earlier today, and you could readily say that, well, schilling at his best was better than kershaw at his best, and theres no doubt about kershaw. schilling also has a better career than verlander, who should eventually get in with ease, and grienke, who should also get some fairly healthy consideration. and that's without looking at any bloody socks or postseason performance numbers. i think that many of the voters that are out there trying to say he wasn't that good are in danger of straining their credibility. especially if they lean too heavily into it, and start complaining about win totals. i mean, you can set your standards as loftily as you like, but if they're so high that schilling-the-player cannot clear them, you're gonna have a hell of a time electing anybody in the coming years.
  16. um.... ok, stretching, and poking around on wikipedia... how about william wheaton and william tucker, of the back-in-the-day knickerbockers, who (according to wikipedia) are credited with coming up with the original rules of baseball. without them, we ain't got nothin' otherwise... uh... i'm out of ideas.
  17. by edgys accounting, i think we can all agree that mr. met should be #1.
  18. does michael jordan's nba career count? alternatively, perhaps bo jackson, by the same cross-sports accounting? apologies for not having access to the list so far. i'm really just tossing far-flung ideas at the bad ideas at the fan and hoping some of it sticks to the walls.
  19. i don't know that they're NOT eligible....? has he included any negro leaguers? that's the only other pool of eligible players that i know of. or he could go super-old school and pick Jim McCormick or Tommy Bond, old deadballers who each only logged 10 years. mccormick's WAR7 was higher than clemens, though you could certainly quibble with such stats from back then. bond's was a touch lower, but still outstanding. otherwise, i'm fresh out of ideas.
  20. arod, maybe. but its a stretch. pujols, possibly, if he's alllowing active players. and even bigger stretches. otherwise i got nothing. is there a negro leagues player that's been grossly overlooked by the HOF? or is he holding out on, say, sadaharu oh? hmm... ichiro...?
  21. i think that porter might've hurt only from the standpoint of springer maybe not wanting to go from one fiasco to what could have been the makings of another. i don't think it was the change in personnel, and yeah, sandy could surely get the job done if need be.
  22. damnit. no telling how much the porter fiasco might've just cost us. good on the jays for capitalizing, though. but OK, so what's plan B? do we move on jackie bradley junior to give us some centerfieldering ability? or do we turn instead to deepening the rotation, perhaps with a tanaka, or maybe a big reach on bauer? defenisve shortcomings aside, there really are not much in the way of upgrades out there for our outfield at this point. not for nothing, but fangraphs puts as the 9th best CF right now with nimmo out there. (10th after they post springer) they also have us at 8th in left field, and that's with a somewhat pessimistic take on dom smith, at least compared to what a lot of people on here are thinking. we're weakest at 3rd, according to fangraphs' projections, fwiw. what can we do there?
  23. yeah, i woulda gone with lou, too, but i wasn't nearly as familiar with grich. still aren't. but so sez the numbers. grich even got a slightly lower percentage of the vote than lou, too. whitaker has the higher bbrefWAR, grich has the fangraphs advantage. i think they are both quite deserving f the co-owner title. and its an ironic additional indignation to heap upon the both of them.
  24. bobby grich might have an argument there, seeing as how he's the only guy on bbref's JAWS list who ranks out above the average HOFer at his position who a) is not yet enshrined was a one-and done c) does not have an asterisk attached to him and d) played in modern times.
  25. I thought this thread was about bob ojeda...
